Hi Stuart,
I checked the Ayrshire OPR Birth Index and there were no entries that matched your Catherine born c1829 in Largs. I also checked marriages and there are a few Alexanders marrying Jane/Jean/Janet etc before that time period.
I also checked the 1851 index and the most likely was this Catherine but she was living in Ayrshire although not born here.
ARDROSSAN ED:1-7
Catherine DUNCAN
Born 1829 aged 22 in 1851 Servant Unmarried Born Cordoll in Argyllshire
There are also the following Catherines in the 1851 index, I do not have access to these records;
Kirkoswald ED: 2-4 aged 20
Stevenston ED: 7-30 aged 30
I think there is an index to the 1841 Largs census available at Ardrossan LHU. Email Elizabeth Bell the North Ayrshire local historian and ask for a lookup. Email address on the Ayrshire GenWebPage at:

A quick check on Hugh Wallis site showed only one birth in Largs with Alexander as a father in 1852
