I found the following marriage & birth info on the IGI for this family. The birth of James in 1855 means that if you access the image of the birth registration on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk you will get a place of birth for his parents. 1855 was the first year of government registration and the records were more extensive than in following years.

The birth of a second James in 1861 is slightly confusing as in the 1881 census his age is given as 25, which would make him the James born in 1855.

Thanks so much for the website. I went through census records for this family in Kilbirnie. Seems they liked the names Sam and John and James so it was rather confusing until I printed out census for all the MacCallums in Kilbirnie.

Am researching my husband's family - from Kilbirnie. I notice a few of the children listed have the same names as some of mine. Probably cousins. If you have any that don't fit in, and you want to discount them, let me know - i may have them!!
