Can anyone help me? I am in pursuit of my GGG grandfather George Carruthers born and died at Dumfries (1796-1884) and his wife Elizabeth ... the only link I have is that his wife Elizabeth Carruthers (nee Carlyle) who was born at St Mungo in Dumries October 1798 actually died at Mauchline, Ayr 11th May 1873. There certainly is a period 1830-1884 after they had their children in Dumfries that they disappear from that Countys records. George was a Rural Police Constable (in receipt an annuity at the time of his death in 1884). The only clue I have which leads me to believe that they lived at Mauchline was Elizabeths death in that town in 1873. Is there anyone out there in possession of the census for Mauchline or any other records for the period 1830-1884?
Best wishes

Hello Gary,

I checked the 1881 census for you and George was still in Dumfries with his daughter Jane.

The 1851 census for Dumfries, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire is online. Wigtownshire is not complete.

There are indexes to the Ayrshire 1851, 1861, 1881 & 1891 censuses. Ask the local historian/archivist for a lookup. Give them the names and ages of their children as well as it helps to identify the correct family. Email address for the South Ayrshire archivist you need [and North and East] are on the Ayrshire GenWebPage.

Alex,
Thank you so very much for taking the time to look up this info for me ... its very much appreciated. I already have that info - what Im trying to locate is the whereabouts of George and his family after his children were born. (They disappear from Dumfries in 1830 and George returns to die in 1884. As his wife Elizabeth died at Mauchline I am hoping to find them living there prior to her death and his return to Dumfries. This info is vital to further research to link other Australian Carruthers branches.
Best wishes
Gary

Hi Gary,

Had a spare moment today to check the 1861 census index and film for you.

George and some of the family were in Mauchline in 1861. You can order the 1871 at your nearest LDS FHC or ask the local historian for a lookup.

Mauchline 1861 ED: 7-13 Cross

George CARRUTHERS Head Married Superintendent Police Officer Dumfries St Mungo
Elizabeth CARRUTHERS 62yrs Dumfries St Mungo
Jane CARRUTHERS 36yrs Unmarried Dressmaker Dumfries St Mungo
George CARRUTHERS Grandson Ayrshire Tarbolton

I forgot to write the age of the grandson down, I think he was about 4-6.

Surnames: Police Records - Carruthers in Mauchline
Thanks to Alex, I have found the location of my ggg grandfather in Mauchline, where he is working as a Policeman. In 1871 and 1881 when he retired back to his place of birth in Dumfries, he is shown as being on a Police pension. Can anyone advise me as to how I can find his police records which Im sure would exist after a long career as Police man and Superintendent in Maucline?

Hi Gary,

Archives for Strathclyde Police are in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, they also hold the archives [or what exists] for the police forces in Stratchclyde before the founding of Stratchclyde Police.

http://www.glasgowlibraries.org/policerecords.htm
http://www.glasgowlibraries.org/strathclyderegionalcouncil.h...

Email the Mitchell and ask if they have the records you seek.
