I would check this family out in more detail. This was the only John born in
Girvan in the 1881 census cd. You did not give the mothers forename. There is also a
McBRYDE as a boarder that is a scholar - I suspect more likely he is a younger brother to the mother. Note Agnes is still listed as married so her husband was elsewhere on census day, most likely working elsewhere and is recorded elsewhere.
