Surnames: McKiernan McKernan
Around 1886, Michael McKiernan and his wife Ellen (McGarry) moved from Kinune, Glendun, Co Antrim to Scotland, bringing their children Michael (b 1878), Thomas and Ellen Jane (both b 1883) and Daniel (b 1885).

Two further children were born in Scotland, Mary (b c1888) and Margaret Ann (b 1889). The family settled in Ardrossan, Ayrshire, where Margaret Ann was born, but the only birth record for a Mary that I can find in 1888 relates to Dirleton (Lothians?).

Margaret Ann died in infancy, but all the others are in Ardrossan in the censuses of 1891 and 1901. Mary died in Ardrossan in 1922.

In the 1920s, Daniel (with his Scottish wife Ina McDonald) and his parents returned to Co Antrim and settled in Straid, Knocknacarry, Co Antrim. Daniel was a carpenter; his father Michael seems to have worked in coal-mining in Scotland.

Interesting facts about this family include: Michael (senior) was one of the last Gaelic speakers in Co Antrim, and was recorded reciting a local song in 1931. I have heard that Daniel was a professional footballer with Dundee or Dundee United, but I cannot confirm this. There is an interview with a daughter of Daniel at http://www.antrimhistory.net/interviews/mary.htm.

Now, I would like to trace descendents of the other family members, who may have remained in Scotland, viz. Michael (junior), Thomas and Ellen Jane. I wonder if their descendents are still in the Ardrossan area.

Do you happen to know the names of your Michael's parents in Ireland, and where or what year he may have been born?

I am researching my father's family in Co. Antrim, in the area of Culfeigtrin RC parish, just outside Ballycastle, in the area of the Glens. My paternal grandfather, CHARLES McKIERNAN, was born in 1847. He married married MARY McALLISTER..
Charles parents were HENRY McKERNAN/McKIERNAN and
SARAH McCAIGUE/McCAUGE. This Henry McKERNAN/McKIERNAN appears in the Tithe Applotment records in the year 1831. Since I don't know all of my paternal grandfather's siblings, I am wondering if your Michael may somehow be connected to my family.

According to what my father told me many years ago, the family often went back and forth to Scotland. Based on what I have learned since researching, this appears to be because of seasonal work. Some family did stay in Scotland as I did find a descendant of my grandfather Charles' sister, MARY McKERNAN/McKIERNAN FERGUSON, living in Glasgow. This Mary is estimated to have been born around 1840.

If you think there may be a connection, please contact me.

There does not seem to be a connection here. Your Henry McKiernan is from Tornaroan, whereas Michael is from Glendun. Michael was born in 1844, to Thomas McKiernan and Jane McCambridge. See http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/~oduibhin/doegen/mckiernan.htm and follow the link on "Michael McKiernan".

Hi

Your post does not seem to be connected to research in Ayrshire or Scotland and is therefore outside the remit of this board/list.

If there is an Ayrshire connection please mention it in your post.
If your post is connected to areas outside Ayrshire then please post to that board or list.

It is often better to ask the board or list admin if the post can be posted if you are unsure, or to send a non-related post direct to the poster and not through the board or list.

Kind Regards
