As far as I have already mentioned I have these surnames related to the Murrays : Fergusson, McMiken, Wallace, Barbour and Drummond. The Wallaces are not my husbands family but relations of my gt grandmother from Dailly. One of the sons, James, moved to Dalmellington and the Murrays stayed with them during the 1890's. I also found another family of Murrays in Craigmark, Dalmellington at this time. They were Peter and George Murray originally from Sorn. Also when my gt grandfather came to live in Symington they stayed with a Janet Murray, a spinster, at Whitelees Creamery near Bogend Toll just outside Kilmarnock. Her family were from Wigtownshire. I am still not sure if this is just a coincidence or whether they were actually related.

I noticed in your text that you have McMikens in your tree. I have McMikens (descandents of William from Upper Drumwall) mostly from Kirkcudbright- any relation!

I am not sure if my McMikens hailed from Kirkudbright as I don't know that much about them. My gt gt grandmother was Janet McMiken born about 1812 daughter of William McMeiken and Elizabeth Graham of Dailly, Ayrshire. They turn up in the 1841 census living with a James Johnstone Wallace and at that time he was not married to Elizabeth but they had 4 children of their own! I have not been able to find a marriage for Elizabeth and William McMeiken. I can only assume that they were never married and that Janet was the the outcome of an affair. When was the William you mentioned, born? Could he have moved to Ayrshire? I think my William was a miner. I do know there is a family of McMeikens who own a farm in the Dailly area but can not find a connection with my McMikens yet. I am forever hopeful to find the origins of the family as I can not get any further back until I do.

William Mcmiken was born about 1782 and died on 20 July 1854, at Upper Drumwall, Girthon, Kirkcudbright. He was a farmer as were his sons. But like you I have hit a dead end! If I come across a Janet McMiken in my research I shall let you know.

Could you please tell me a bit about your murrays?

I am not having any luck with the murray side of my family.
If you can help me l would really be happy.

My Murray family came from Park, Closeburn, Dumfrieshire. My gt grandfather was called David Murray and he was a shepherd. He was married twice, firstly to Mary Geddes and they had Robert, born 1879, Elizabeth, born 1880 and Mary, born 1882. Secondly he married Janet Fergusson in 1886 (after Mary died in 1885) they had Sarah, born 1887, Janet, born 1889, Annie Jane (my grandmother) born, 1893. David and Janet along with Robert, Janet, Sarah and Annie Jane moved to Ayrshire around about 1905. Robert married a girl from New Cumnock, Sarah married an Englishman and my grandmother married my grandfather, James Drummond in 1919. Janet, I think, remained unmarried.

Do you know where your Murray's were from? There are John Murrays in the family but I have not done much research in to the ones who remained in Dumfrieshire after my gt grandparents left.

I don't get down to Dumfrieshire very oftern so I would love to find someone with a connection to the Murrays to share information with. Hope we have a connection.

Hello Sally, I have a picture of a J.C. Gemmill that was given to me by my Grandfather, Andrew Gemmill. He told me it was of his Great-Grandfather, J.C., who ran a blacksmith's shop. I don't know his name, but the area sounds like it could be the same area my people came from in Canada, around Port Perry, Lanark. I can't seem to find any info on the family. Andrew's father was Robert Gemmill, His Mother was Rebecca Edwards and they lived in Edinburgh, ND. Very staunch Presbyterians from Scotland. Could they be the same family?
