Re: Murray's of Ayrshire

I can't believe that there are so many David Murray's. When I came across your queries I so wished that I have found someone with the same family as mine. My David Murray was born in 1852 in Closeburn Dumfrieshire and married Mary Geddes and had Robert, Elizabeth and Mary and secondly Jessie Fergusson and they had Sarah, Janet and my grandmother Annie Jane. My grandmother married my grandfather James Drummond in Kilmarnock in 1919 and went to live in Fife (where I was born). Coincidently I now live in Kilmarnock.
I recently found out that Robert Murray married a Janet Barbour from New Cumnock in 1900 and they had a son, David born in 1909. I would now like to find their descendants.

Sorry Andrena I am not able to help you, but you might want to look at the research of the pre 1855 OPR Births and Marriages for MURRAY in Ayrshire at

Wishing you well in your search,

I am sorry that I don't have any information on the Weir name. The only connection I have to the Weir name is that John Gemmel or Gemmill (Gemmill being the name that I am researching) married an Ann Weir, April 2, 1799. John and Ann immigrated with their 6 daughters and 2 of their 3 sons to Canada in 1821 from New Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.
I am sorry I am not of further assistance on this matter. If you feel that you have a connection to this Ann Weir I would be interested in hearing from you. Thank you! Sally

The only thing I know is that my Ann Weir was born 7/28/1812 and I think her father was Robert and that I think her sisters were Marion, Lillian, Margaret, Agnes. She was born in Scotland. I think she married William Guthrie Gibson and had children, Lillias, James and Robert. James married Mary Scott and moved to Illinois where they had two children William and Anna Weir Gibson. I don't know if any of these people have a connection to you but if I find out something else I will contact you.

Hello Andrena, I'm in Irvine cannot see so far any connection, there are so many David Murrays, I have a picture on my site of 5 together, but they are all related. What other surnames do you have?

I think perhaps your David Murray was born too late to be related to my gt grandfather. My Murray family did not leave Dumfrieshire for Ayrshire until the early 1900's. My gt uncle, Robert Murray (b. 1879) was the only member of the family who could have carried on the family name and his son David was not born until 1909.

I know Murray is a fairly common in this part of Scotland, before I actually found my gt grandparents I stumbled across 2 other David Murrays, one from Cumnock and one from Kilmarnock.

Good luck with your research.
