Hi, my name is Allison Wyers and I was wondering if anyone could help me in my research. My fathers last name is Lapraik and I have been trying to find any info that I can on the history of it. I know that he is Scottish but I could not find anything else. I recently found a little bit of info in a book of surnames which said that "Lapraik: from the lands of Lapraik, of old Lekprevik. The castle of Leprevik is about a mile from Kilbrdie in Lanarkshire.........John Lapraik, a minor poet was a friend of Robert Burns......." I am not sure if any of this makes any sense to you, the only thing I have seen pertaining to the name Lapraik is this artilce and a monument errected in Muirkirk (near Ayrshire) of John Lapraik and Robert Burns. If you could help me in any way or even direct me that would be wonderful.

Thank you for your time,
Allison Wyers

Hi Alison,

If you go to the google search engine and do a search on Lapraik you will get lots of links to do with that surname.

If your research is in Lanarkshire you would be better to post your query on the Lanarkshire Query Board at:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~sctlks/

The Ayrshire How To Guide explains research mainly in Ayrshire but will give you an idea of researching in Scotland in general.

Good luck in your search.

Regards

Alex

Dear Allison,

I have quite a bit of information on the Lapraik's from Muirkirk in Scotland, starting from John Lapraik the poet through to myself seven generations later. My great grandfather James Henderson Lapraik came to Brisbane in the 1860's and I have traced the lineage (including certificates) back to John the poet whose monument is in the park on the road into Muirkirk. My wife and I went there in 2001 and I have quite a bit of information including photos of the cairn as well, where his house once stood. If you are interested in any of this recent information you can get me on the email address.

Cheers
James Henderson La Praik, Brisbane, Qld, Australia.
