Where is Galston located? You mention Torrance being in business. I was reading old newspapers online for the Glasgow area in very early 1800's and their were a couple articles re: partners William Hamilton and a man by name of Torrance. Can go back and locate if interested. I think it was a furniture or cabinet business, but I could be mistaken. I am researching the names Young and Hamilton in Barony, Barachnie, and Rutherglen.

Ruth,
Galston is on the road east out of Kilmarnock (A71).
You reach Hurlford, then Galston, then Newmilns, then Darvel

Fro;m http://www.biographi.ca/ for James, Gibb: "businessman born 22 April 1799 in Carluke, Scotland; married 8 May 1822 to Marion Torrance in Montreal. He arrivedat Quebec in 1814 at the age of 15 and went to work as a clerk for William Torrance who like his brothers John and Thomas of Montreal, traded in foodstuffs, wine and spirits. ......in 1815 his sister married William Torrance, and seven years later Gibb himself married one of William's sisters."
William's father was born in Larkhall, Scotland 1735 and died there in 1895.
There appears to be enough commonality to suspect connections.
I am a direct descendent from William. I have some more history to share and would appreciate any related information. Is Larkhall near Galston?? There also was the Kirk of Torrance in/near East Kilbride

Hi Folks - I'm no relation but I'm happy to weigh in with the geography!

Larkhall is the other side of the hills from Galston - nearer Hamilton - but is actually only about 23 miles away from Galston.

Don't know about the Torrance Kirk but Torrance house is a Golf Course just south-east of E. Kilbride. However, are you also aware of the village called Torrance - in E. Dumbartonshire just N.E of Kirkintilloch.

Hello Ruth, I noticed that you are also researching "RENNIE". I have a Jane RENNIE, b 1822, Girthon, Kirkcudbright, who married Samuel Lawrie (Laurie) 1850. Jane's parents were William RENNIE and Mary Lowdon who married 1824 in Girthon, also had a daughter Agnes RENNIE .... just wondering if we had a connection.

Regards, Linda
