Re: Pettigrew/Petticrew

Margaret Campbell and John Stewart of the Tarbolton area were married in the 1860s. About a month before the marriage she had a son who wasn't registered until after the marriage. On his birth cert. the name Petticrew, with a line drawn through it, appears with the name Stewart in the column giving the child's name. Was this just a clerical error on a busy day, or was a Petticrew the father who 'did a runner'? I understand that shame of illegitimacy at that time was felt only if the mother remained unmarried after the birth. Margaret and John Stewart went on to have several children. John had himself been born to an unmarried mother who eventually married and had more children.

The cutty stool must have been well used at that period.

Robert Jamieson of Beith is also my great great grandfather.
I currently have no information other than his occupation (plasterer)and his wife's name which are on my great grandfather's(also Robert Jamieson) birth certificate. Presumably Robert (born 7th June 1866 in Beith) was the eldest son (? named after his father). He died on 24th September 1943 and is buried in West Calder cemetery along side his wife Marion Frame. Any further information would be welcome.

I wonder if we might be related? My great great grandfather was Robert Jamieson (plasterer) married to Elizabeth Forsyth in 1861 in Ardrossan. His son Robert (my great grandfather) was born in Wilson Street, Beith on 7th June 1866.
Any information?

Hello Robert,

Looks like your Robert Jamieson, and Elizabeth Forsyth, had at least 11 children.

You mention there marriage 28/June/1861. Ardrossan, do you not have their actual marriage certificate, this would give the names of both sets of parents of the couple.

Robert Jamieson, born 07/June/1866. Beith, was in fact the third born child of his parents, the first son was John Jamieson, born 22/Sept/1863. Beith, and i think this John, was named after Robert's, father.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hi John
Sorry I don't have Robert Jamieson & Elizabeth Forsyth's marriage certificate. I got this date from message board entry from Jane McKinlay (posted in 2000). She also posted request for info on John Jamieson (born c1815) & his wife Janet Kerr (also born c1815),parents of Robert(c1834), Jean(c1841) and William (c1844). Does any of this tie in with your info?

Hello again Jonn,
I wonder if you can give me any further information about Robert Jamieson (born 7 june 1866), his parents or his siblings.
I have some old funeral cards relating to Jamieson's in Beith which I am trying to tie in with my great-grandfather who was born in Beith then moved to West Calder
Regards Robert

Robert Jamieson, born 07/June/1866. Beith, Ayr,

William Jamieson, born about 1875, West Calder. Midlothian,
Agnes Jamieson, born about 1878, West Calder, Midlothian,
Barbara Jamieson, born about 1880, West Calder, Midlothian.

The 1881. census for West Calder, address Dixon Street, has the family.

Robert Jamieson, Head, Plasrerer, M. age 46 years, born Beith, Ayr,
Elizabeth Jamieson, Wife, M. age 45 years, born Coatbridge, Lanark,

No sign of their other kids, John, Janet, and Elizabeth, John, and Janet, could have been married by this time, but Elizabeth would have been only 14 years, so i doubt if she would be married, still she may possibly be working away from home.

Regards,
Jonn.
