Deb:

I don't know if this is the same Elizabeth. The information is from an 1871 Census taken at Allanstor Croft, in Leswalt, Wigtownshire of my McKie family. I will have to look this up and see if I can find more detail when I next go to the LDS Centre.

The first two are my great, great grandparents.

Daniel McKie, head, married, age 48, Crofter, Born in Ireland, Co. Antrim (sp?)
Margaret McKie (ms. McCrea), WIFE, MARRIED, age 48, born in Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire
Helen McKie, daughter, age 17 unmarried, scholar, born in Kirkholm, Wigtownshire
May (or Mary) McKie daughter, age 10, scholar, born in Leswalt, Wigtownshire
Daniel McKie, son, age 7, scholar, born in Leswalt, Wigtownshire
ELIZABETH PETICREW, mother-in-law, age 80, born in Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire

I notice the one 'T in the above name and Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire is quite a distance from Mauchline. As well, my Margaret MCKIE's maiden name was MCCREA..... so the Peticrew has thrown me for a loop. She would have to be Margaret's mother but the maiden name is not the same, unless of course, Margaret had Peticrew as one of her forenames? I don't know Deb.
Daniel McKie,

Helen McKie

Helen,

The Elizabeth PETICREW is your Margaret's mother. The IGI shows the birth of a Margaret McCHIEA (sic) 11 Feb 1821 in Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire to William McCHIEA and Elizabeth PETTICREW.

There are two probable reasons for the use of her maiden name.

1. She refused to let the census taker record her by her married name. Not unknown to happen, one of my female ancestors, the mother of five children by her husband, was recorded in both the 1841 and 1851 census under her maiden name.

2. Margaret might have been illegitimate. This is the only birth recorded to this couple and obviously the mother didn't die. Margaret would have been entitled to use her father's name if he admitted paternity before the kirk session. You would need to check the kirk session records to see if any mention appears.

This is to Jo An Croft who has posted an explanation of why Elizabeth PETICREW shows up as the MOTHER IN LAW on a Census I have from my McKie family!

Well, I'll be darned! It never ceases to amaze me what I learn every day. Thank you for the explanation on the use of her father's name if he admitted patternity before the kirk session.

I will check the kirk session rcords next time I am down at the LDS Centre in Calgary. I expect I will have to order this in from Salt Lake City.

Thanks so much for a wealth of info!!

I have recently discovered a Jamieson Connection in my tree. Briefly; My Great uncle's wife Janet Montgomery born 1907, was the daughter of William Montgomery and Janet Jamieson of Kilbirnie, Ayrshire. I have the obit notices which have a lot more names. If this is of interest to anyoneplease contact me. I would need proof of connection and permission of living relatives before sharing details
