Does anyone have any information of Mary Scott? She was born in 1835 in Auchinleck, Ayrshire, Scotland. I think her parents were John Scott and Margaret McRee. Mary married James Gibson April 3, 1855. They moved to the United States eventually settling in Illinois. Mary Scott Gibson died July 3, 1902 in Piper City, Ford, Illinois. (James died Nov. 18, 1898 in Illinois - They are both buried in Brenton Cemetery, Piper City, Ford, Illinois.

I would really like to find out more information on my ggg grandparents (John and Margaret McRee Scott) and the family; or if they were not her parents I hope to find out her her parents actually were.

Thank you.

To find out exactly who Mary Scott's, parents were you would need to purchase her marriage certificate, this would provide her parents names.

Mary Scott, the daughter of John Scott, and Margaret Cree, was actually born 20/June/1832. however on the index for her birth and her siblings births on Scotlandspeople, there is no place of birth, Parish, or County, recorded, i have never seen this before

On the 1851. census Mary, is not with her parents, but her siblings are down as born in Sorn, Ayrshire.

Regards,
Jonn.

Thank you John.

Would you be able to give me any information on her siblings (at least names and birth dates or approx. birthdates? Did the census state the ages of John and Margaret?

Below is your family in 1841 and 1851 from the Free Census site : it looks from the 1851 as if both John and Margaret were born in Kirkconnel in Dumfries-shire. This is the website.

www.freecen.org.uk/

You probably need to get on the Dumfries-shire list.

The Census provided by Mary, above are the correct family, here are the births for the children.

Scott Adam, 30/03/1844,
Scott David, 07/04/1836,
Scott Elizabeth, 12/07/1842,
Scott Isabella, 08/06/1839,
Scott Janet, 28/10/1850,
Scott John, 07/02/1846,
Scott Margaret, 24/11/1833,
Scott Mary, 20/06/1832.

As i stated on my post there was no Parish, or County, on the index for these births, there was however a Gross Reference number 613. i have looked this up and it is for the Parish, of Sorn, Ayr.

This information works in with the census provided by Mary.

Regards,
Jonn.

Janet,
If you haven't got it already I think you need to buy Mary and James's 1855 marriage certificate from scotlandspeople.

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

You'd need to buy 30 credits for £6 and would only spend 5 or 6 credits to get the certificate. It is a real treat to get a 1855 Scottish certificate as they give you all sorts of information not on later years.I reckon they asked all the questions they could think of in that year.

This would give you both Mary and James's parents for a start.

Best wishes,
Mary
