My 4th. Great Grandparents were: Malcolm McPherson(1734-1817) and his wife Christian Downie(1744- ? ). They came to America - N. Carolina in 1774 with their 2 children, William(1765-1825)& Janet(1764- ? ). The ships manifest stated they came from Glenurcha, Scotland which is probably called now Glen Orchy, located a few miles east of Oban. I have not been able to get a hint of their Scotland families and would be grateful for any information. I should be satisfied but am always trying. 7 more children were born to this couple in America after the Revolutionary War but I am descended from their 2nd. child, William. Thanks in advance.

I don't know if forum members are aware of the Scottish War Memorial Project and the Scottish War Graves Project?

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/

The Scottish War Memorial Project now has over 2000 war memorials throughout Scotland photographed and available to view on the forum including 1124 out of the approximately 1400 civic war memorials of Scotland recorded.

Visitors are free to browse the forum looking for names but we are also looking for more volunteers to help us update the forum and help visit the 280 Scottish civic memorials still to be photographed and recorded on the forum

We also have a companion site, the Scottish War Graves Project

http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/

We aim to photograph and transcribe all headstones and church memorials in Scotland which have a military connection, not just the Commonwealth War Graves headstones.

Please visit the sites to see what our members have been posting and if you are interested please sign up.

Kind Regards

Adam Brown

Loudoun / Loudon Genealogy

Hello - I am researching my Loudon family history and am trying to connect my American Loudon's to my Ireland and/or Scotland Loudon's. A big task, I know :-)

My basic line goes like this: My 2nd great grandfather was William Loudon, son of John and Lovina Leigh Loudon. John was born in Ireland abt 1798 and came to the US with his parents about 1800 and settled in New York and then moved to Indiana where he settled. John's parents were Joseph and Jane McConnelle Loudon - both born in Londonderry, Ireland. Joseph's father was John Loudon, born 1740 also in Londonderry, Ireland and his mother was Ann - no surname. This is where documented information stops. However, I've recently found the following information that I'm hoping to confirm:

John's parents may have been John Loudon and Jean Campbell. John's parents may have been Nicholas Loaden and Elizabeth Morton. Nicholas' father may have been James Loaden from Fife, Scotland and his parents may have been James Lothian and Margaret Cunningham.

I've been told we are probably related to the Campbell Clan from the Castle Loudoun.

Any help with this line or suggestions on research would be most appreciated!

Many thanks,

Sue Manz Graham sug53@earthlink.net

There is mention of his land being "sequestered" in 1852, and I'd like to know what that means exactly, if someone could help?

Elizabeth's birth year was 1797, and she was the only daughter of James Fraser. She had about fourteen children, with three younger sons leaving for Australia in 1853, including Alfred Stewart Galbraith, the g-grandfather of a friend here in Australia.

Can anyone help with their death dates and places, or any other information about them please?

Deb

population movement in mid argyll in mid 1700s

I have a query regarding population movement in the parishes of Inveraray, Klchrenan and Dalavich and Campbeltown in the mid 1700s.
I have an ancestor Alexander McDuff who appears in Klchrenan in 1778, partner of Betty Agnes McLachlan who gave birth to son Daniel that year.
I can find no reference to Alexander in OPRs prior to that date.
He may have originally been a McDuffie or McPhee from Colonsay or possibly any other part of the McPhee areas (Bute).
Alternatively he may have been a McDuff in which case his people would have come from Perthshire or Fife.
The breaking up of the Clans, the Kintyre Plantation, the 1745 rebellion, the clearances, the Crinan Canal and the start of industrialisation had significant effects on this area.
McPhees were and still are wandering tinsmiths (tinkers).

Has anyone else traced ancestors to this area and had any success in pushing further back?
The OPRs seem to run out of steam prior to 1750 in many parishes and it seems that many marriages were not registered.

McMillan/MacMillan Family of Argyll

Seeking information and descendants of Duncan and Mary (Todd) McMillan of Argyll. Duncan born about 1802/1806 Polaich, Kilmallie, died possibly 1871-1876; wife Mary Todd, born about 1809/1811 Craignish, Argyll; they are believed to have wed July 20, 1833 in Kilmallie, Argyll. Mary's parents believed to have been Elizabeth and Robert Todd of Argyll. Duncan had a niece named Jean McMillan born 1851 in Glasgow. The children of Duncan and Mary are believed to have been: Sarah, born abt 1835; Ann, born abt 1837/38; John, born abt 1838/39; Robert, born abt 1840/41/42; Janet, born abt 1843; Mary, born abt 1843/44; Angus, born abt 1845; Elizabeth, born abt 1846; Ewen Hugh, born abt 1848/49; Betsy (could be Eliz. above) born abt 1848; James, born abt 1852; Catherine, born abt 1854. The middle names for James and Katherine are believed to have been Todd, their mother's maiden name.
Ewen Hugh, James, and Katherine immigrated to Canada abt 1893 accompanied by the children of Ewen Hugh McMillan (late wife Alice Jepson 1886), the children were Mary Alice, Duncan Thomas, and Nancy Ann McMillan. All eventually lived and died in British Columbia. Passenger records have not been found, but it is believed they came over on the HHS The Boiler, May 1, 1893.
Researching this ancestral line is proving very difficult, and info or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Gary S.A.

Ok, so I am new at this. I have been researching a branch of my family and have traced it back to the Argyll Campbell's of Scotland. I keep getting messed up in the 1700's, and need help on where to go from here. I have a Robert Campbell who was a sea captain in Scotland , and he went b/t Scotland and Charleston/Savannah in the late 1700's or maybe early 1800's. I want to find out more about him. Does anyone know where on the net I can look up information in Scotland about him? I can trace him from America on, but I can't find birth dates and such. I have all of his descendants and several predecessors, but I am STUCK on him!! Thanks for any help, and sorry if I was confusing in my questions. My mind feels a little overwhelmed.

Melanie

My great-grandfather was Angus McLellan, who emigrated from Scotland around 1848 to settle in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. In the 1881 Canadian Census, he is listed with wife Ann, and a Donald McLellan is listed as Head of Household. Donald is 60, Angus is 40. Donald is listed as a widower. Surely he must be Angus' father. In Scotland, the only case I can find of a Donald McLellan with son Angus, (and the wife is not mentioned, which is certainly giving it credibility), is in Kilchoman, Argyll, Scotland.
Anyone with any information on this would help me make the connection between the New and Old world. Thanks in advance.
Steve MacLellan

Mac/McKendrick

I'm searching for information on origins of Lauchlin MacKendrick (abt 1740 - 1817), who was married to Rachel Galbraith (1736 - 1838) in about 1760, possibly in Campbeltown. They both born in Argyllshire, possibly in or near Campbeltown, and emigrated to North America in 1770 on the ship Annabella. At least three children sailed with them, and legend has it that one child (Neil) was left behind. The otehr children were Donald, Janet, and Malcolm. Four more children were born in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The captain of the Annabella was Dugald Stewart of Campbeltown. The settlers may have been heading for the Carolinas, but landed up in PEI, either by accident or design. There are good records of the family in PEI, but no one seems able to find anything about their origins in Scotland. Any help would be much appreciated.

Flora MacPhail, daughter of Donald MacPhail and Catharene MacLean, was born in Balinoe, Tiree, on 14/7/1818. She was my great-great-grandmother. She married John MacDonald, also of Balinoe, on 11/1/1843. They had one child, a daughter, Catherine (my great-grandmother), born 7/3/1844. Flora must have died shortly after because John MacDonald re-married in 1848. I would be grateful for any information at all about Flora's ancestry, and about when she died and where she was buried.

Their children (all born at Cornaigbeg): Hector b. 2 Nov 1811; Lachlan, 4 June 1815; Alexander, 1 Aug 1817; John, 29 Aug 1818; Mary b. 15 Sept 1819; Catherine, 25 Aug 1821; Hector, 5 Apr 1823; Christina, 8 Mar 1825; Hugh, 19 Mar 1826; Donald 27 July 1828; John 11 Apr 1830. Most of the children probably emigrated from the isle. Lachlan and wife Isabella Stewart from Salum, with Lachlan's brother Alexander emigrated from Tiree about 1851-1853 and settled in Bruce Co. Ontario, Canada. Would like to find where the rest of the children went and their descendants.
Did any of the children remain on the Isle of Tiree?

Hello,

I am desperate for any information available for the above person. I have attempted to research Ann for a while but with no luck. Ann died in South Australia, but was married to Dugald McKinnon on 25 May 1851, Kilmallie, Argyll before emigrating to South Australia. On her death record (1902), it lists her age as 71 which means she would have been born cir. 1830/1. Most frustrating about her is that there could be several options for her on the 1851 Scotland Census. She should be there somewhere. Also worth mentioning is that two of her children, born in SA, had peculiar middle names which may be her mother's maiden name these are: Mcdougall and Thompson. If anyone can provide me or has some information on Ann, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Looking forward to hearing some replies,

Sarah

Hello
I'm trying to trace my Gr Grandfathers family. He was John Anderson b 1883c.

I found that there was a John b 1854 ( my gr grandfather's dad was also called John)... this John was the son of William & Rachel and was born in the Parish of Kilbrandon in the village of ellenabeich at Engineers House.

He would be about the right age to have been my gr gr grandfather.

My Gr Grandfather was in the Gordon Highlanders & was reported ' Missing In Action' after the first battle of the Somme.

On my Gr Grandparents marriage certificate it says John (father) was a stone mason. I presume they came to Kendal (Westmoeland, England) to build the Carnegie library. As apparently my gr gr grandfather left his sign in the red sansstone.

My Gr Grandfather married Margaret ( Maggie ) Bainbridge-Halliwell on Christmas Eve 1906.

They had 2 children.

If anyone can tell me if this John is the same one as I am in search of I would be VERY grateful.

I have very little to go on I'm afraid...

Kath

Neil was a ship's carpenter.
Neil's parents were Angus SMITH and Margaret ORR who were married in
Ardrishaig in 1804.
Jean's parents were Duncan MCPHAIL and Sarah DEWAR who married in 1825 in
Glassary Parish.
The children of Duncan and Sarah MCPHAIL were:

Mary b.1826
John b.1828
Archibald b.1831
Sarah b.1836
Janet b.1842
Jean b.1845 * my great grandmother
Isabella (Betsy) b.?

I can track the SMITH line back to a William SMITH born circa 1746 in
Kilmartin. According to my
second cousin, Miss Miread SMITH ,the original SMITH was a Roderick-but I have
yet to substantiate that fact.

I am at present trying to find out who the parents of Duncan MCPHAIL and Sarah
DEWAR were. I was told the MCPHAILS originally came from Kames, Lochgair and
then lived at Silvercraigs, Lochgilphead.I remember visiting a distant
Aunt? called Sarah MCTavish who lived at Castleton Cottage in Lochgilphead
when I was in my early teens about
30+ years ago. She had a sister and brother-I think they were Jock and Janet.

If you would be so kind to pass on the information to the McPhails that you
know I should be very grateful and
if there are any SMITHs out there connected to my line, I should love to hear
from them too.

TIA

Penuel Ellis-Brown
Bolney
W.SSX
England

Hello Wayne,
I have just subscribed to this List (after many failed attempts) and am interested in your message of Feb. 18th re Colin Sinclair.
I am trying to locate a Colin Sinclair who was at the Battle of Corunna in 1809. He was a brother of my great great grandfather, Archibald Sinclair who was in the 79th Cameron Highlanders at Corunna. There was another brother, Donald. The three of them were together the night before the battle. There is a Donald Sinclair listed with the 98th Regiment, A&SH in 1794, but I have no record at all of Colin. He would have been in another regiment.
It is a long shot that your Colin and mine may be the same person, but possible.
Archibald was born in Oban on 5/1/1775, and is buried in the Kilmelford cemetery, near Oban, having died in August 1837. His parents are unknown to me.
Do you have any data concerning the emigration of David and Jane to Australia? The offspring of Archibald came to Adelaide in 1839.
Cheers,
John McIntyre,
Australia.
jsmci@hdc.com.au
Neil MacNeill and his wife Jane McGregor are the earlist generation of MacNeills that I have found so far. They are found at the turn of the 19th centurt in Gigha. Neill was one of about 20 crofters on the island at this time. Neill was married to Jane McGregor and in about 1799 they had a son Malcolm. If anoyon has further information of either the Macneills or McGregors, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

I am searching for the ancestors of Daniel McNeill. He was born in Scotland abt. 1746 and came to NC around 1758. He is said to be a son of Archibald McNeill, who tradition in NC says was a half brother to Neill Du McNeill, the founder of the Argyll colony in North Carolina. I would like to verify if this relationship is true and would like to find Daniel's ancestors if possible. Daniel settled in Cumberland county in NC, which later became Moore county. He married Sarah McKay, daughter of Archibald McKay and Ann Gilchrist.
Any info would be appreciated.
Kelly Douglas McNeill
Kellymac@rtmc.net

ARGYLLSHIRE SINCLAIRS

We are tracing my Granny Sinclair's (age 85) line in and around Dunoon/Invararay/Greenock. Gran still cares for many of the old Sinclair headstones in the Dunoon cemetery - some who have decendents located in the states. We would love to learn more about any Argyllshire Sinclairs - we have traced one side of our family back to Papa Stour, Shetland Islands - but we have another side (Sinclairs married Sinclairs) that appears to be local - at least for a longer time. Any idea what brought the Sinclairs to Argyllshire??

Mhic na cearda of Argyll

I am researching the McNokaird's of Argyll - Inveraray area and would like to share information with anyone who has come across this old Argyll clan (Mhic na cearda) in their research - any source. There were some McNokaird's (and various spellings) in Kenmore, Perth also - but VERY interested in Inveraray line. They disappear from records shortly after '45. One family is to have lived in Glen Shira (near what is currently Deer Park.)

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much

Jul

My ancestors are all from a traditional travelling background.

I have a mountain of information to share - as I keep "hitting" the wrong names on the Scottish GRO Site. If they are not directly connected to me - are they connected to you?

If interested, drop me a line, and we may be able to swap details.
