Hi, firstly have you found anything further to your search?

We are descendants of the Matthews Family from Utah and Alexander Black McEchearn is my Great-Great-Great Grandfather on my mothers side. I have some history after his birth but not anything from his Scottish Ancestry as apparently he came to Canada and left Scotland severing all ties with his family. It's cloudy passed down stories, but it's all we could find.

William McVean. Im not sure about the original spelling but the family changed their names to Bean as they thought it was easier for peaple to pronounce. My great grand father was then William Franklin Bean. I know he had a brother named Roy.

Hi Margaret:

Have you found your Gilchrist ancestors yet? I'm a descendant of Jennie Bahn, who married Archibald McNeill. Also, of course, a descendant of Margaret Gilchrist and John Smith, and so am also interested in those lines, but know nothing about them. I've been following the McNeill information, though. I've just come from NC where I took photos of the McNeill/McKay cemetery which was relocated a couple of years ago from it's place at the old homestead to a church graveyard.

Look forward to hearing from you.

According to 1851 Census Ann McDonald was born Arisaig 1801. Her son John was also born there about 1826. According to John's death certificate his father was Simon McDonald, writer (solicitor or legal clerk of some sort). Several suggestions have been given to me re Simon including leaving Scotland for the Colonies without his wife or child. Simon is not a particularly common name and I've been told only one sept of McDonald used this name and were 'legal' people. I can find one baptism for a Simon McDonald, born 1794 to Donald McDonald and Margaret Cameron in St Mary's, Glenstrath Farrar, Inverness. Does this connect with anyone

Jessie McDonald (or Macdonald) Fisher

I have added an extract from a memmoir of an aunt of mine, who is now dead. I am trying to trace ancestors of mine, particularly a child born in Oban, Argyll, named Jessie McDonald (or Macdonald) Fisher. The fiollowing extract is all I have to go on.

"Nain had been born Jessie MacDonald in Oban, North Scotland - she was half Welsh and half Scots, her father a minister in the kirk. When she was eight her father took a ministry in Canada and she used to tell Jessie stories of the boat trip over - how the sailing boat rocked and rolled about and everyone was sea sick except Jessie. The winters in Canada were of course very severe and after just a year Nain's father died of pneumonia, so she and her mother returned to Oban - where her mother also died soon after. Nain was sent to live with relatives in Central Wales - and, as she had lived her life in Scotland, she could not speak any welsh, but, as young children are so open and willing to learn, she soon picked it up. She must have seen Jessie in a similar position, because she was always willing to teach her welsh words and expressions. At the time of Lall's birth, Taid was game warden on the estate of Brynbras Castle, near Caerharfon."

Any help would be much appreciated.
stuarto@talktalk.net

I was tracing my father's family (last name Downie) they are from Kimelford and Kilniver near Oban and I came across a Catherine Rowan who married Archibald Campbell in the early 1800's or late 1700's. They had a daughter named Matilda Campbell who married a Downie. Catherine Rowan would have been my great great great grandmother. I found the birth record for Matilda Campbell on Scotlandspeople.org. She had at least one brother from what I could tell from the records. I tried to trace Catherine Rowan but could not find any information on her other than her marriage.

My grandmother was Jessie MacLeod Harvie. Born 1860 near Ottowa Canada. Story goes that her father was Peter Harvie born 1818 Scotland, and wife was Mary. Family also says that Peter was a doctor. Jessie also had a sister Sara Taylor Harvie. Married my grandfather Frank Clough in Minn. MN. I hope this helps.

If you have any information about Old Oban there is now a new collaborative site to share this with everyone.

oldoban.wikidot.com

Its just started but will grow as contributors add information.
It does not matter how randomly the information is added, pages will link up in the end as it grows.
