Andrew Gowans, a ships master and Prudence Bell married 1824 in Greenock. Not known how many children they had apart from Andrew born 1836 Greenock. With a 12 year gap between his birth and their marriage would assume other children born before him. I would very much appreciate hearing from anyone with any details relating to either Andrew and Prudence or if they had any other children. Many thanks

The 1851 Census entry for the family reads as follows:

1851:Renfrewshire,Greenock(Middle):
At 24 Regent Street:
-Prudence GOWANS,mar.,wife,44,Seaman's Wife,b.Ayrshire,Irvine.
-Andrew,son,unm,15,Scholar,b.Renfrewshire,Greenock.

So it would look as if there were no kids after Andrew,and if there were any before him,either married (girls),or maybe at sea (boys),or deceased.The person Index for this census for Greenock and district does not list any likely candidates as siblings,unfortunately.

I am related to this family as well. My Grandmother was a Margaret Martin Gowans, whose Parents were John Gowans and Jane Annie Miller McLachlin, whose parents were Andrew McCurdy and Margaret Martin - Whose parents are the Gowans-Bell
I found a lot of records on Scotlands People but the links peter out with the switch over to the OPR's
Not sure if you are still researching but I'd be interested in finding out what you have
