I am a descendent of Archibald Meston Fletcher, eldest son of John Fletcher and Mary Meston. Does anyone have any information on the elusive John Fletcher - there is no record of him other than that he was a gamekeeper in Glenbucket at time of Archibald's birth (Strathdon Vital records). He was not the son of James Fletcher and Elizabeth Gray. There is also no marriage record to Mary Meston, or birth records for the 3 sons.

Hello....I haven an Arbuthnot Hadden b. 1766 in New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire to unknown parents. She married Thomas Will 13 Dec 1792; I have the GROS record. Their son Thomas b. 1794 is my husband's ancestor. Arbuthnot died 23 Dec 1853 in New Pitsligo. Several generations later a Will son married the daughter of David Law and Anne Cowie (Reid) Mowatt and the couple moved to Vermont in the USA. Do either of these Hadden or Mowat lines intersect with yours, Andy? Thanks...Kim

Re: Nathaniel Cowie - Who's Your Daddy?! b Culsalmond 1825

Although you'll probably never have proof, there is strong circumstantial evidence that the parents of Nathaniel are Alexander Cowie and Janet Tocher.

I mentioned in a previous posting spending time in Edinburgh. Don't know if you're familiar with ScotlandsPeople on-line but if you visit them in Edinburgh you can spend the day looking at certificates, census returns and OPR records for a single day fee (with digital copies available pretty cheaply). I did it the old fashioned way to-day by dropping in at my local LDS Research Centre and looking at microfilm of Culsalmond OPR's and early census returns.

Note that in Scotland Jean, Jane and Janet are inter-changeable.

Starting with the 1841 census. The family are at Fordmouth - it's this location which is key to my argument. Alexander (aged 25 - 29) is shown as a Farmer. It was suggested to me that this indicates the family owned the farm.

He appears to have a sibling Jane aged 25 - 29

I mentioned in a previous post 3 Cowie baptisms (for John, Jean and Alexander). Looking at these on the microfilm reveals the family was at Foordmouth on all 3 occasions. The baptisms of Jean and Alexander are consistent with the ages in the 1841 census and give Alexander Cowie and Jean / Janet Tocher as parents.

In 1851 Janet Tocher is at Fordmouth with her daughter Jane. Their ages are consistent with the 1841 census.

Using a commercial Index for the census (Ancestry - who have Nathaniel in 1841 as "Katharine") I can find Jane Cowie in 1871 at Fordmouth. Living with her is 10 year old George B Cowie (nephew). Can't find her in 1861 or 1881 (so she may have died 1871 - 1881).

George Bartlett Cowie is the son of James Cowie and Jane Gordon. They also had a son John Cowie born 5th September 1855.

In 1851 Nathaniel is an Agricultural Labourer at Skares with his wife Isobel and eldest child John (Jonas). John is illegitimate, his mother being Margaret Cormack. A witness to the child's baptism was a John Cowie.

A John Cowie (with wife Margaret Thomson) appears in later census returns at Skares.

You didn't say who the parents of Nathaniel's wife (Isobel Smith) are but at Skares in 1851 the Farmer is a George Smith with his wife Isobel Fordyce.

All circustantial I know but it all helps link the family. If you can find Jane Cowie's death certificate after 1871 it should name her parents (hopefully to confirm Alex Cowie / Janet Tocher). John Cowie's birth certificate in 1855 should give a wealth of detail about his father James who you know is a sibling of Jane.

1855 was the start of Statutory Registration in Scotland and certificates from that year contain a great deal of information. So much so that the Registrar's complained and in the following 3 or 4 years little information was recorded. A compromise was then reached which makes Scottish certificates very useful (as they usually contain parental information).

It appears Nathaniel had siblings John, Alexander, Jean, Janet and James so linking them helps confirms Nathaniel's parentage.

Looking at as many "Cowie" OPR and certificates as possible would give additonal "links" - mainly witness to events and locations.

Finally, Fordmouth doesn't appear to be named on Google Maps but there is a pricture of the farm if you know where to look. From the following select the 1898-1904 OS One Inch series and then Sheet 86 - Huntly (the second link may take you directly there. Culsalmond is in "pink" at the foot of the image. "Skares" is in the top left hand corner (beside 35.N.W.) and "Fordmouth" almost directly to the east. Other maps can also be viewed here

http://maps.nls.uk/counties/index.html#aberdeenshire
http://maps.nls.uk/os/view/?sid=74400837

Brian

My grandmother's maiden name was Isobel McWilliam McKewney. She was born around 1906 in Aberdeen. I believe that she had two sisters, one of whom married, the other was a spinster. All three sisters are now deceased, and the story that I have been told was that when the spinster sister died then she was the last to bear the McKewney name. Whether this last part is true or not I don't know, but the difficulty in finding even one McKewney on the Internet certainly backs this up. If you have found any more out about any of the McKewney's then I'd love to hear. I might be able to find out more about the other sisters given time.

Further to my prev post, I have found Census records for 1851 and 1861, which are rather interesting:

1851: New Deer
Jean Watson ( 70 yrs) Head of household
Elizabeth Watson (34) daughter
Elizabeth Walker (10) granddaughter
James Fraser (6) grandson

1861: New Deer
John Laird (41) Head of house
Elizabeth Laird ( 45) wife
James Fraser ( 16 ) stepson

From that, I am tempted to think that Elizabeth Watson was the mother of James Fraser, but either never married the father of James or reverted to her maiden surname for some reason. She later married John Laird.
James Fraser was clearly integrated into the Laird family, so not surprising that he married Mary Laird ( daughter of Alexander, NOT John - must have been a cousin)

Does this ring any bells ?
Once you get back before 1855 everything becomes guesswork unless you find census records, statutory certificates after 1855 or MI's for a family.

If this is your family then Alexr is aged betwen 25 and 29 in 1841 and his mother is Janet. Using this and doing a search on Family Search brings up a baptism in 1813 - parents Alexandr Cowie and Janet Tocher.

Doing a parental search then gives (all Culsalmond)
John, baptized 8th December 1808
Jean, baptized 12th Novemebr 1810
Alexander, baptized 1st February 1813

Jean and Alexander fit the 1841 census.

A day or two in Edinburgh would give full access to the national records (anything on ScotlandsPeople plus more).

For Aberdeenshire, ANESFHS is the local FHS and they have a research centre is Aberdeen http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/

Brian

I am planning a trip to Scotland soon to see if I can track down anything else. Do you have any suggestions as to what to do while I am there to verify or continue pushing backward in my family history?

You have been a great help by the way. Thanks!

No, I think Alexr is the eldest son (at home anyway), sibling of Nathaniel and he became head of the house on his father's death.

If no Church records exist then you may have got as far as you're going to. You may not even be able to confirm the 1841 census entry.

Brian

So are you thinking Alexr is Nathaniel's father? It shows Alexr as 25 and Nathaniel at 15...doesn't make sense to me. Or perhaps I'm missing something! Nathaniel immigrated to the US (Ohio) sometime in the 1850's I believe. I have been able to track down a lot of information about his family once they arrived, but going back any further to learn of his parents or siblings has been tough.

The 1841 census has few details and adult ages are rounded (down I believe) in 5 year multiples.

Given that Alexr is shown as head of the household it is reasonable to assume that his father (Janet's husband) is deceased. If he was absent from the house on the night of the census I would expect Janet as head.

Statutory registration only began in 1855 in Scotland and records prior to this are patchy - especially Deaths.

Did Nathaniel emigrate after 1851 as I couldn't find him in future census records ?

I suspect the 5 year old Jane to be a niece of Nathaniel.

Only other idea would be to try and follow the siblings Alexr, Janet or Jane and see if you can find a death record in Scotland after 1855 which might have parental details.

Brian

Brian,

Thanks for the reply. I did discover that census and believe it is the same family, the trouble is, if Janet is the mother (presumably given her age), there is no mention of her husband. I suspect he may have passed early, but I can't find any other information older to verify this or to at least get a name. Any other ideas?

Linda ,
I would be really pleased to receive info on John Murray's business. My interest in him is as follows my x2 gt grandfather , Thomas Robertson , who was a coppersmith in Aberdeen had a brother, Joseph Robertson, who was married to John Murray and Ann Good's dau Margaret Gordon Bannerman Murray.
I have an extract from the Trade/ Burgess book for Aberdeen
[1825-1836 p. 30] when John was made a burgess of his craft.

Margaret Gordon Bannerman Murray married Joseph Robertson who was a coppersmith like his father Thomas. Joseph however did not stay in Aberdeen and was a foreman coppersmith at the Royal Naval Dockyard DEVONPORT.

He married Margaret GB Murray in Pentonville in 1858. I believe The Murray family had also moved from Aberdeen. I am not sure when The Murray family came south as I do not have them on the 1851 census. Maybe you will be able to supply me with that info.

Looking for William Burr information:
1851 Scotland Census List the following:

Willaim Burr
B. Fyvie, Aberdeenshire
abt 1815
Farmer

Wife: Agnes (Beaverly?)

Children:
Agnes, 5
Arah, 7
William, 11 month

Also believe George Burr, B. abt 1843 was their son, in 1851 he was living with his grandfather George Beaverly, Master Blacksmith. I come from George Burr.

Can't find William Burr after 1851, think his Parents my be William Burr and Christian Duguid. I found a Christian Burr, age 56 living in 1841 with a John Burr.

1841 Censu list the following:

John Burr, 28
Jean Burr, 27
Ann, 6
John, 4
William, 1 month
William Burr, 26
Andrew Burr, 19
Robert Burr, 17
Christian Burr, 56

These all match but I have nothing positive that this is the all the same family.

William Burr's Parents were (may have?) been William Burr and Jean Crocker

I come from George Burr(b. abt 1843)and Elizabeth
Alexander Burr 1882-1958
Alexander Burr 1909-1993
Alexander Burr 1937
Stephen Alexander Burr 1963

Steven Burr

I'm trying to locate James DUNCAN and family as shown on the 1841 Scottish Census :

Piece: SCT1841/202 Place: Huntly-Aberdeenshire Enumeration District: 1
Civil Parish: Huntly Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 1 Page: 1
Address: Bogie Street
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
DUNCAN James M 26 Shoemaker Journeyman Outside Census County (1841)
DUNCAN / GATHER Elisabeth F 20 Outside Census County (1841) Maiden name crossed out-Hard to read
DUNCAN Ann F 3 Aberdeenshire
DUNCAN Margaret F 1 Aberdeenshire
GATHERER Adam M 60 Farmer Aberdeenshire
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If I can locate the marriage records they might tell me where James and Elisabeth were born. Also,by locating the birth records for the daughters, hopefully it will tell me more about their parents.

They left Scotland for Canada sometime after this and settled somewhere in Ontario where my GGGrandfather George DUNCAN was born.

I'd appreciate help with this family.

Thanks in advance.

With so many Duncans it is a little difficult to know how accurate ones information is. My family origins appear to go right back to the 1730's in the area of Banchory Devenick.

Duncan researching family..can anyone please help..(James DUNCAN b abt 1807 d Co Mayo, IRL 1874)

Researching my great great grandfather James Duncan, we knew he was from Aberdeen, he came to Ireland and died here in 1874 in County Mayo, by his age of death on death cert we thought he might be born in 1809, but matching births at that time does not fit in.. and his fathers name John on his marriage cert here.. so think he might have been born 1807, we think he had 2 children over there but left them to be brought up by there grand parents.. we know he spent time at sea in alaska..kinda lost on his past over there, as we know after he married here.have few possible mothers name but not sure if we are right.so if there is any Duncans that can piece it together be happy to hear from you..
Ruth

Dear Alan,
I am thrilled to hear from you. Mary Ann was the daughter of Mary Ewen Anderson. I have waited a long time to hear from family. I would love for you to send me any information about our history. In return I can send you stories about the family here in the States.

Mary Ann, my grandma, named me Andrea Elizabeth after the family name Anderson and a relative of hers - names I am proud of.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
