The www.irishgenealogy.ie records are on line but do not include Wexford anymore. They were handed over to the
Irish History Foundation about 2 years ago. They only have 4 Wexford Parish's so far. www.rootsireland.ie

Annette

www.wexford.ie the county website has what to see and do

If you are there in Aug. 3 & 4th. there is a Re-enactment of the Vinegar Hill Battle at Vinegar Hill 1798.

Castlellis is on my map, leaving Gordon you have a choice of the main highway N11 to Ferns and Enniscorthy or the secondary highway R741 and Castlellis is 25 miles south of Gorey.

The Parish and the Townland Knockbaun were in both the Union of Enniscorthy and in Gorey, Parish Inch was the CofI parish for Gorey. I do know that this Parish is on the History Foundations www.rootsireland.ie website.

You can research the Parish records for Inch on the above or go to the Representative Library for the Church of Ireland just outside Dublin. I take the bus from out in front of the National Library in Dublin and its about a 15 to 20 minutes bus ride and a 1/2 block walk. I will look up the address for you. They are online with a map as well.
You could drive there as there is a small area for parking
(4 cars) I have to take the bus as I don't rent a car.

I'm not sure how much time you have but it wouldn't hurt to visit the genealogy' department at the National Library as they can look up where Parish records are kept, either in their own microfilm records (RC) or at the Church of Ireland, Representative Library or perhaps in the county parish. That's worth the hour or so.

The CofI Representative Library you have to do all the work, the staff will bring the pertinent Parish Registers but you have to go through them and write down what you need. They are very good. Last time I was there, no photography was allowed, not even with no flash.

You can walk through any graveyard and take photo's but most churches are locked, so look up phone numbers ahead of time and make appointments. Don't expect the clergy to be happy to see you, some are and some aren't.

CHURCH OF IRELAND

www.library.ireland.anglican.org

email: library@ireland.anglican.org

This organization is also starting digitized records
eg: Wexford, Templeshanbo, Ferns

There is a map for driving and bus instructions

Wexford Historical Society:

www.wexfordhistoricalsociety.com
research, photo's a contact us form

They would be good for general information and some the the place names and Parish's that have changed names or been amalgamated and called something else.

I will get back to you.

Annette

You are the best!!!
So kind.
Will definitely do as you suggest.
I have no stories at all about that side of the family so this will be a "reccy" style visit, just to get a feel for the place and hopefully find out something about Atkins and Woodroofe's in the early 1800s.
Am also going to Meath to do the same for the Currans so any tips for Meath most gratefully received. Have downloaded the Meath Tourist booklet to print etc and will continue to do more hunting around myself but it is so great to have an expert advising me :-)
Grateful thanks
Lyndy

Hello: I don't live in Wexford but would I think the most important thing would be a good map. Preferably an OS map.If you are driving they will give you a map or you can buy one.

I have a driving atlas and I will see if I can locate some of the old names of towns and places.

I would think a visit to the Wexford Library in Wexford Town might be a good place to start as the genealogy office has been closed about 4 years now. Their Parish records were given to the Kildare H.Office of www.rootsireland.ie and they are slowly getting the Wexford records back on line. I don't think that will occur before you get there in July.

If you are starting in Dublin the first place to head would be Gorey, Wexford, Ferns Diocese. Clergy aren't very happy to be trying to help people in their genealogy searches as they are overwhelmed by them.

Gorey is the first bigger size town on my map, then you head inland to Enniscorthy and then back to the coast and
Wexford Town. I do have a map of the graveyards for
the Cantwell Memorial Inscriptions which you could then match up to some of the towns.

Villages and Parish's were in Poor Law Unions and the later Civil Registration District and within 12 mi. of the named towns. So you should be able to get within 12 miles of where you need to be.

Looking back to 1846 Abel the grocer, often grocery stores and wine and spirits were sold in the same place. Sometimes from the front room of a house.

When you go take white tissue paper and black wax crayons or the right type of crayon for rubbings of the gravestone inscriptions. A digital camera takes pictures of inscriptions that can be seen even in shadow and rain but
on a dry day and poor inscriptions can be brought to life through a rubbing.

There is still a history society in Wexford, I will look into that as well and get back to you with that info as well.

You could go to a library at home and see if they have maps of Ireland that you can photocopy rather than buying a Road Atlas.

Annette

I am going to Wexford in July and would love to visit relevant places.
Could you possibly give me some tips about towns I might visit that might be relevant?
I know its a long shot but thank you in advance,
Lyndy

There was no registration of marriages prior to 1864 for Catholics, and with those surnames I would suspect they were Catholic.
So you're left with parish records, which may or may not have the entry you require.

Denise,
If you google Byrne Pender Rathantan you will get lots of hits that relate to your query. Including a link to the book The Byrnes and O'Byrnes, where your James is mentioned on page 20.

p.s. You will get more replies to messages with specific info in the subject line. Vague subjects lines are often ignored by list readers.

Hello, thanks for your information. I have found no other info so far regarding Sarah Goodison (my gt gt grandmother) other than she married Charles Murphy in c1860. She was born in Wexford c1834. I am unable to ascertain who her parents were and if you could help me on that score I would be very grateful. About what date range would the John Goodison you are researching be? and could he be Sarah's father perhaps? Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards
Lesley

Hi! The Goodison that I know of is John Goodison who was an extensive landholder in and around the area of Boolavogue/Tomnaboley (which would make sense connection to Fr. Murphy as that was the area he was parish priest over). Beyond that, I would love to have more information if it could be ascertained, as my family, the Doyles, rented from him.

Dear Suezz62
My Great Grandfather was William Batterton,(1855-1932) of Irish Street Enniscorthy . His older Brother, Thomas born c.1851 lived next door. (1901/1911 census records). My mother, daughter of Christopher Batterton(1880-1951) (William's son) grew up in Irish Street. Accordingly I would greatly appreciate any help in finding out who their (William's & Thomas's) parents were, if they had other siblings, and where were they were from. I suspect there has to be a Mulrankin /Bridgetown connection with so few Battertons about at that time, and I would sincerely appreciate any information or help that you could give me in this regard to rule this theory in or out. My Batterton line ceased with my mother as there were no male siblings to carry the name further. Neither of her sisters had offspring. And neither did she have any male Batterton cousins that I know of.
While researching, I came upon a transcript of your Great Grandfather William’s Death Notice and an Obituary that appeared in the Free Press at Funeral time in Enniscorthy in 1935 . If you are interested I will type it up and send it to you wish.
Incidentally I was in the Mulrankin/Bridgetown area last weekend and called to the Churchyard . I could find only one Gravestone there bearing the Batterton name.
Yours sincerely
Ivan Deacon
My relative was Elizabeth A. Doyle, born between 1857-1859. In my search, I found a Washington State Territorial census which had noted that she was from Newfoundland. This was the only census that listed Newfoundland==the others listed Ireland. She did live on Prince Edward Island later on with her family and married in St. John, New Brunswick to a Martin Tierney. My mother said her father was named Thomas Doyle when I asked. I have pictures of this grandmother on facebook, and there are pictures of her daughters, including one daughter who looks like she might have resembled her. Martin Tierney and children are also in my facebook. Anyone can get on facebook and all you need to do is write a message and notify me and I will contact you back which lets you in. Please state "looking for relatives."
I do believe that her original family had come from Wexford and the word in the family was that she lived in Newfoundland and/or Nova Scotia. Martin did live in Massachutsetts before he went to Canada.

I found the name of Jane's first husband only on the marriage record of my ggrandmother Elizabeth in Ontario. So now we don't know for sure whether its her husband or her brother buried with her parents in Ireland.

I'm sure if I get my trees rebuilt and can get back to siblings uncles nephews etc. there is something of Baynes to find. Although I was in the Glencoe (Ontaro) Historical Society once and I was the only one there so the volunteer historian devoted his whole time to me. He found some wonderful stuff but I don't remember actually asking about the Baynes. That may have been before I found the cemetery.

So appreciate your efforts, but I think I'm done for now.

My grandfathers brother was named Charles Bayne Schwaderer and one of his grandsons is named Bayne Roland so I figure if that ancestry is important to them they are capable of further study. The original beloved Wm Bayne is our STEP-UNCLE and thats outside what I'm working on while rebuilding my destroyed files.

Re: hay family

Hi Leigh
This is such a startling story. My connection to it is that Mountiford Hay was the son of my great grandfather's first wife and her first husband. In other words, he was the son of Eliza Hay (known on the stage as Mabel Hayes) and Mountiford David Hay. Mountiford David Hay filed for divorce from Eliza when he found out about her affair with my great grandfather Robert John Hall, in 1881. Before the case could be finalised, he died of cirrhosis of the liver.
I had a look at the source for your idea of Phyllis going to the US in 1930, but it's not Phyllis but Phillip (he's noted as a Man in the census), so I think that's a mistake. I'm also not sure that Mountiford David was an actor: he is listed as a medical assistant and a postal worker.
Last interesting thing: my great grandfather and Eliza had no children, but my great grandfather married again and his children from that marriage apparently met the children of Eliza (possibly Mountiford Henry or his wife? because Eliza had only one son as far as I know) on a train by chance around 1920 (perhaps they made a wrong connection, but that is the family story)...
I would be very interested to know if you have any information on what happened to Eliza or Mountiford Henry after 1882 or so as I cannot find her in any subsequent English censuses, nor can I find evidence of her death. Mountiford H does appear in censuses with his wife Louisa.
Thanks for the info!

I believe its possible that Jane did not meet William Bayne until she left Ireland, perhaps he was on the same boat but according to my father she worked in a store when she arrived in Canada which leads me to believe she had not yet married Mr. Bayne. I don't know where the Baynes came from. He would be my step gggfather so not high on my list to track down while rebuilding ancestor file.

Aggain thanks for your efforts.

Salut Danielle,

It looks like I'm after the same information, as I'm also descended from Brigitte and Andrew Murphy. I found some leads when I looked into the Frampton QC Irish immigrants that came from the same place, near Oulart (where Tiknock is) and from elsewhere in the Ferns Diocese of Wexford. There seems to be a strong family connection to Miles and Thomas Murphy, with Miles probably being Johanne's uncle. This connection is NOT through Andrew Murphy, Bridget's husband.

Hi
I hope you don't mind me writing but I've just started tracing my ancestors and was delighted to see your post. I'm also the Grandson of William and Mary Parle from Clydach as I'm the son of Peter Joseph Benidict Parle the brother of your father William and Thomas,Mary and Ann. Unfortunately My dad Peter died in 2000 before I was interested in getting any family history. There now follows a short history: My dad Married our Mother Viola but known as Pat in 1950 and my Sisters Margaret,Ann, myself Peter and Brother Stephen lived in Kemsing a small Kent Village near Sevenoaks Kent. Unfortunately our mother died tragically young at 38. So Dad was left to bring up four young children on his own, as Stephen was only about One when Mum died her Sister Beryl adopted Stephen and he was brought up in Devon. We are all Married and strangely all four of us went on to have 2 children each, a Son followed by a Daughter. Margaret now lives in Portugal, Ann in Ditchling near Brighton I still live in Kemsing Kent and Stephen in Perth Australia as he married an aussie!
I know Margaret visited her relations in Wales when she was young but unfortunately I never did,so have no details of Dads side of the family.
As I said I've just started tracing my past and have got back to William and Mary who I believe died before I was born in 1956. Do you have any details of them, do you know where or when he was born? If I can be of any help in details of the Kent side of the Parle family I will be more than happy to help, Kind regards Peter

Hi Annette,

Thank you for your suggestions....I am situated in Australia, but have spent years finding quite a lot about our Adam and his family.
We are however, just stuck with his wife Margaret Murray...her life and her demise.
One day though, some new evidence may come to light.
Cheers,
Robyn

I think the only way for you to find records is to
try www.rootsireland.ie and although he had children in various counties, you could search just with a father
Adam and see if there are any other wives that way.

The CofI records on my CD only range 1864-1875 for births
and marriages from 1845-1862 and I haven't found anything I haven't given you already.

If you could make a trip to Dublin (I'm assuming you are in England) The Church of Ireland, Representative Libraries have original parish registers you could go through for his birth record. Records to about 1899. Its only the Wexford
records not on www.rootsireland.ie (also Dublin City
www.irishgenealogy.ie)

If he had children after going to England I didn't find them on the CD with a father Adam nor a birth for Adam if born
in England. The English records go back to the 1600's.

Have you looked at www.freebmd.co.uk (might not be correct but you can find by the first part)

Good Luck.

Hi there,
Mrs. Ann Tristram was the wife of Thomas Tristram, son of Adam Tristram and wife Margaret/Margret Murray.
Yes, Ann is buried with her Mother, Mary in Killanne.
Thomas was the eldest child of Adam born abt. 1837, Gorey, Co. Wexford, so we presume his parents were married about 1835. The Tristram family was Church of Ireland.
The Tristram Civil Registrations are of our Adam and his next wife, Mary Ann Budds....This is the first Marriage Cert. we have found...There was a possibility of another wife between Margret Murray and Mary Ann, but we have no proof.
Adam was a teacher till he moved to Liverpool, where he died.
Samuel and Horatio were two of his many children, Samuel was my GGrandfather, Horatio did not have children.
There is some family tale that Margaret Murray Tristram died of an accident falling from a horse....again, no proof.
Cheers,
Robyn
