Hi - My great-grandfather is Benjamin Crawford, born 1846-1852 in Derry(Londonderry). His father was James Crawford. His mother Mary (?). He immigrated to the US in 1881. It is possible that he immigrated with brothers. The family split up a bit when they got to the US and I'm having trouble finding information. I'd love to hear anything that anyone may have come across. Thanks for the help.
Karen

James STRATLIN -- Derry, Ulster Ireland

I am Anne Stratton Hilts. I found my probable ancestor James Stratlin as a wedding witness in First Garvargeh Presbyterian Church 1833 in Derry, (Ulster) Ireland at the wedding of John Stratlin & Eliz Gilmore. His son Thomas spelled the name Straiton and then next generation James Stratton. I found it in the Bann River Valley Web site where they list all the church reconrds. Happy to send you my tree if you might fit in. How can I get farther back in time? Which N Irish history book should I read about 1700's there with surnames of the plantation settlers and the Covenanter Army? Anne

William Francis Martin; Mary Cronin; 1850s -1860s; Ulster
Do you know the town where this William Martin was born and who his parents were?
Did he have any siblings?

William Francis Martin was born August 1852 in Ulster, possibly in one of the Counties Antrim, Derry or Galway.
He and a John Martin, probably older than William, traveled from Londonderry, County Derry, N IRE to New York, New York, USA on 25 April 1865 on the steamship Stadacona. Their passage had been paid for by someone in America who 'engaged' the McCorkle Lines and paid their fare. I have not been able to determine who that person was.

At the time they left Londonderry, their emigration sheet shows their home on 25 April 1865 as Aughill (possibly Aghahull townland), Aughnish Parish, Derry. [The spelling may be incorrect - it may be a phonetic spelling of what the clerk heard]. The record also showed a Rose Martin still living at home in Aughill, relationship unknown.
Their Post Office is listed as Ramelton.
DNA testing has shown direct matches to Martins who lived in County Antrim. That may have been William & John Martin's county of birth.
William was Naturalized as an American citizen on 18 September 1871. His record is in the Court
of Common Pleas, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA.
It stated he had arrived at the Port of New York (USA) in 1865.

He married Mary F. Cronin, born in Ireland, in Philadelphia on 23 October 1879.
Mary's parents, William and Eliza Cronin were both born in Ireland.

William was enumerated in the 1870 census of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The 1880 Philadelphia Census shows the birth locations of he and his parents as:
William, born Ireland, Father born Ireland, Mother born Ireland
However, the 1900 Philadelphia Census shows:
William born Ireland, Father born Scotland, Mother born Scotland

William died 8 July 1904 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
He is buried in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have any suggestions about how I might find records of this Martin family in Ulster, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you for the advice.

Bill Martin Denver, Colorado, USA
billmartin44@ieee.org

I am searching for the Joseph Gardner Brown family that emigrated from the area north of Belfast aboard the ship Metagama May 27, 1927 sailing to Canada. Joseph's wife's name 'may' have been Isabel Hall. Nine children accompanied them. Four of the children's names were Robert, George, William and Cassie. Could someone tell me how to look up ship's passenger lists for this time.
It is said that the family came from Balleymoney but this is not confirmed.
Any suggestions on where to search are most appreciated.

Goolsby that came to Virginia

John Goolsby and sister Lucy Goolsby came to Virgini, USA.
Not sure when, but approximately in 1700 - 1750. They later settled in North Georgia . We have very little information on that period, John Goolsby had a son named William C. Goolsby. He was born in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. One of boys of William C. Goolsby was named John Lacy Goolsby. John Lacy Goolsby son Raymond, stated that they were from Ulster, Ireland, but that covers a large area, as per the map.

Would appreciate any information, that by chance anyone may have.

Any information anyone may have would be appreciated.

I hope I haven't come to the end of the research into my Family Tree but I can't seem to find much on them or even confirm for sure that they came from Ireland, but the Family Legends & Census Records do say Ireland.

My Great-Great Great Grandfather, Thomas Rutledge married Jane Thomson (Thompson) who was suppose to be the cousin of Lord Kelvin.

They had my Great-Great Grandfather Robert Rutledge who married Ellen Elliot (daughter of Robert Elliott and Elizabeth Graham).

They all apparently moved to Canada sometime before 1851 because I have the Elliott Family on that Census.

Does anyone know how I can find out birthdates, etc and confirm that they did really come from Ireland?

Henry J. Wilson and Family

Hello,
I am looking for any help I can find. I am trying to find out information on my great great grandfather, Henry J. Wilson and his family. He has always been a big mystery to me. I have only two pictures of him and in both he looks so sad. Henry Wilson was born on 21 August 1820 in Ireland ( I believe county Down) He traveled to America in 1850. Many years after he died in his old trunk there was a picture of a woman and on the back all it said was Dublin. Henry married Amanda Jane Dent in Iowa in 1864. When she married Henry J. Wilson her family disowned her because of the age difference and the fact that he was Irish. Amanda died in 1865 giving birth to my great grandma Amanda Jane Wilson.
Henry Wilson died in 1900, he struggled most of his life making sure my great grandmother was taken care of. The only thing written on his headstone was father. We have always wondered if he was married and widowed in Ireland before coming to America. Just something about his picture makes me want to learn more about him.

Henry had a sister, Nancy Agnes Wilson, who married a William Ford. (not sure when they were married, but they were married in Ireland). Nancy was born in April of 1828 and traveled to America in 1864. She was widowed when she came to America. So William died sometime before 1864. She brought her three children, Sarah, William and Robert with her to America. Nancy died in 1909 in Monroe county Iowa.

Henry also had two brothers, James Wilson who died in Ireland around 1840
and William M. Wilson who was born about 1826 in Ireland and died about 1866 in Monroe County Iowa.

I have no clue how to start researching in Ireland...or what direction to go from here.
if anyone could help me out or has any information on my great great grandfather and his family I would really appreciate it.
Thank you so much for your time
take care
Denise

Robert Watt - Northern Ireland - 1780?

Robert Watt, my g.g.grandfather, was born in Ireland in about 1780. His son, a second Robert Watt, b. 1805, my g.grandfather, said in the 1880 Indiana census that his father was from Ireland. In that the family was deeply Presbyterian and claimed to be Scotch-Irish, it is my assumption that the original Robert Watt was from Northern Ireland. After coming to America, Robert settled in Guernsey County, Ohio and there, along with his wife Nancy, raised a family of seven children; Joseph, b. 1803, Robert, b. 1805, Sarah, Elisabeth, Martha, Rebecca and Jane. Do you know about the Watt family roots in Northern Ireland? Thanks, Dick Watt

Catholics in Ulster

Hi, I was wondering how large the Catholic population is in Ulster, and how large it was in the 18th-19th centuries compared to the Protestant population.

90% of my Irish ancestors (all Catholic) came from Ulster to Scotland, Canada, and the US, and I was just wondering how common this is.

Also, looking for any connections to these families:

Martin, McMuldren, McIntyre, Kirke, O'Hara, McCashin, McGill, McDade/McDaid/McDevitt, McQuade, and Corrigan.

Also possibilities: Tate/Tait, White, O'Neil (believed to have all immigrated from the same place).

Thanks

Wark Mystery???

Everyone loves a mystery; looking for County Donegal connection between Joseph Wark who married Jane McCullough, William Wark who married Letitia Dever and Patrick Wark who married Jane Finley. All three have extensive family trees; all three born late 18th century in Kilbarron Parish, County Donegal; know Patrick and William are related but don't know how; suspect Joseph might also be related. Want to make connection. Somewhere there must exist a birth record for these three men in Ireland - probably Ulster Scots with ancestors going back to Scotland in mid to late 1600s.

No info unappreciated; any info might make connection of three very extensive trees into one very, very large tree.

Help me make "history" here by putting these together!

Hello. My name is Melanie Ward. I live in the United States and am searching for my ancestors.

In my family tree there are 2 men who received royal land grants from the king of england in the yr 1772. Their names were:
- John Ward
- Abdon Ward

Since they requested land in Apr 1772, I'm wondering if they were part of Rev'd Martin's people that went to the U.S. that year.

I realize there are probably a million John Wards, but the name Abdon is unique:

- HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN THE NAME ABDON WARD ON AN IRISH CENSUS OR OTHER RECORD IN IRELAND?
- DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO LOCATE A COMPLETE LIST OF INDIVIDUALS WHO SAILED TO THE U.S. WITH REV'D MARTIN?

The name Abdon may have been a nickname for the real name Abednego.
please help and thank you very much,
Melanie Ward
5th great-granddaughter of Shadrack Ward Sr b abt 1760

Hello,
The Borland brothers you mention are familiar to me. My mother was a Borland and descended from the Samuel Borland line. Years ago, I was in Belfast and found a will probated by Thomas Borland leaving one dollar to each of his sons in American, Matthew, John, Samuel & George I think.
The date of the probated will (1779) coincides with what I know about John Borland. There is a Westmoreland County History which claims he crossed the ocean four times. He first came here in 1759 and returned twice, but the last time, he returned from Ireland he brought his brothers his brothers, Matthew, George and Samuel. They left a sister, Rachel, back in County Antrim.
All of them eventually fought in the American Revolution and received land in and around Beford, but then came to the Delmont area of Western Pennsylvania.
This is a long shot but thought I would try here.

Seven Brown siblings came to America between 1840 and 1859. All that is listed is that they were Irish. Their parents were a Joseph Brown and Ella Carr, who did not come to America.

The Brown siblings settled in Colchester, Delaware County, New York. They were:

Joseph b 1821
Robert b 1825
Isabelle b 1833
William
Charles
Samuel
Thomas b 1844 or 1849 (my gt gt grandfather)

I am trying to find out where in Ireland they were born and where their parents were from. All indications are that they were Presbyerians, and so were probably Ulster Scots originally.
Greetings, after reading over many Borland oriented posts, I am beginning to think that your John Borland maybe might be the father of the William Borland I am researching?

I will paste what I know about William below. But I would also suggest that you look at what I have posted on this date of November 28th, 2007. I responded to a number of posts that very well might answer your questions?

Myself, I am going to start digging around in Northern Ireland and see what I can come up with. Keep in touch if this helps you and we are related? -- DreaBozn@aol.com

Name: William BORLAND Sex: M Birth: 1769 in Vermont, USA Death: 1824 in Bowmanville, Darlington, Ontario, Canada Note:
According to papers found with the Borland Bible (custody Jean Rowe/ Jennifer Muma} William Borland came from the north of Ireland by sailboat in 1785 to Vermont.
I would like to know the geographical and geneological orgins of the name "Givens", and "Embry"

The current Givens and Embry families live in Kentucky, USA. We have traced them back to Butler County, Burdin District, Kentucky in 1880. However, we are unable to trace them back any further in the United States. We believe that the Givens family came from Ireland and the Embry family from England; but do not know specifically from what part, or when they left and immigrated to the USA.

Any guidance you can offer would be most appreciated.

Robert John Gamble (always known as John) was reported to have been born in Northern Ireland about 1765 and immigrated to Georgia, USA before 1785.

John lived in Burke County (now known as Jefferson County) and married Margaret McGill Lawson in 1786. They reportedly had 9 children.

I am descended from their 3rd son, Andrew Thompson Gamble (1788-1843)whose descendant, Katie Lawson Gamble, (1873-1946)married Nicholas Powell Roberts (my grandparents).

Now that I have his descendants I am ready to start in Ireland and trace his parents and ancestors but I have absolutely no idea how to do this.
Hi,

The Cherry name that I'm researching came from Northern Ireland, which county I'm not sure. I'll have to check with my mother in law who knows a bit more about the name. The Minnie Cherry that's I'm researching never immigrated, but I'm not sure if her siblings ever did. I do know that they were all born in N. Ireland. I'll be in touch if I learn anything more!
Thanks for your reply,
Jennifer

MCGINN FAMILY IN NORTHERN IRELAND-SOMEWHERE

Hello from Thunder Bay Ontario Canada.

My ancestors, according to our vague family legend, were Roman Catholic living somewhere in Northern Ireland.
It is rumoured that one individual was educated for the priesthood but decided against that vocation, maybe marrying.
We think that some family members left Ireland for the 13 Colonies prior to the American War of Independence and somewhere along the way they switched from Roman Catholic to Protestant.
The family remained loyal to the Crown and may have ended up in British territory (Canada) during or after the war years 1775-1783.
This is all rumour.
We have no family records to go on.
The earliest I can paper-trace my Great Grand Father John McGinn is an assessment done in 1849 in Escott Tp Leeds County, Then Upper Canada or Canada West, now Eastern Ontario.
John McGinn was born Upper Canada about 1830, Parents and location unknown.
Dec 6th, 1854, John McGinn married Sarah Jane Cooke who was the disowned grand daughter of Richard Griffith of County Kilkenny. ( One of the family gardeners on the Griffith estate, Robert Cooke of Cavan, eloped with Jane Griffith about 1824-6, married and fled to Canada, Leeds Grenville, Brockville. For this marriage beneath her class she was disowned.)
I would appreciate any advice for research in Ireland to try and prove or disprove this legend.
Rob McGinn, Thunder Bay Ontario Canada

I am trying to find out exactly where my husband's ggg grandfather came from, and when he left Ireland. He supposedly came from county Down, and left Ireland during the 1840's. His name was James Cleland/Clelland, and he was born abt. April 1827. I believe he came to the USA toward the end of the 1840s. He settled in Illinois. I do not know if he married before or after leaving Ireland. His wife was Isabelle. I hope someone can help.

Scandrett/ Seymour

I am looking for information about Mary Scandrett (born c. 1848 d. c 1900) who married Thomas Gibson Seymour (b.1841 d.1900) possibly in June 1870. We have no information about Mary's family nor where she came from prior to her marriage apart from her place of birth being given as Ireland in the 1881 England census. Thomas was also born in Ireland possibly at Newtownards or Lisburn and was probably living in Belfast in the late 1860s. Any information would be useful in helping us to fill some gaps. Many thanks.

Percy French - James Kavanagh

Looking for some literature or reference on the 1883ish Government Land Drainage scheme in County Cavan.

My Great Grandfather James Kavanagh lived in Kilnacrott near Ballyjamesduff during this time and worked as a Ganger on this project reporting to William Percy French who had just qualified as a Civil Engineer at Trinity Collage, Dublin.

Percy as we all know was better known for his talents in songwriting, dramatics, banjo playing and watercolor painting. His two greatest songs being 'Phil the Fluter's Ball' and 'Slattery's Mounted Fut'.

Like to learn more on this project and welcome any pointers in the right direction.
William McCorriston and Jane Telford of Belfast

Hello,

I am looking for information on my great x3 grandfather, William McCorriston. He was born in Aug. 1815 in Belfast. He died on 1 Nov. 1884 in Bristol, Quebec, Canada.

I am also searching for information on his wife, my great x3 grandmother, Jane Telford. She was also born in Belfast, in Dec. 1819, and also died in Bristol, Quebec, on 12 June 1900.

I do not know if William and Jane knew each other in Ireland or not, nor when they crossed the Atlantic, nor if they crossed together. They were married on either the 24th or 30th of July, 1847, in Shawville, Quebec, Canada. They had seven children, of which the fourth, John (17 Mar 1853- 26 Nov 1919), is my ancestor.

I have no information concerning the parentage of either William McCorriton or Jane Telford. If anyone can provide any leads or information, I would be truly grateful.

Thank you,

Dave Irving

Co. Fermanagh Muster Roll c. 1630

Barony Magerbuy, Sir William Cole, Muster Roll lists men whose surnames interest me. Namely, William, Andrew, Alexander and Thomas Wiggin, Richard Whitinge, William and Thomas Barefoote. These surnames are all in combination in this same era in Colonial New England with many of the same given names. Is anyone descended of these men? Does anyone have access to any other information regarding the men on this muster roll; such as where they originally came from?
