Jim:

I have identified the exact location in northern Ireland that our William Ruddock departed circa 1700 to come to Penn's Colony. It is The Diamond, Grange Lower, O'Neilland, Co. Armagh. I have not identified the surname of his wife Alice or identified either of his parents. Members of our Ruddock family still live there today. I have traced our connecting Ruddock line back to the area of Carlow in Co. Carlow and to a John Ruddock. We are also related to the Ruddock family once living in Bunclody, Co. Wexford (1850s).

Lewis M. Ruddick

Another good thing is this family isn't showing up there on the 1850 census, and you mentioned they moved to Canada by then, so that's another positive that it could have been them.

Thank you for your kind assistance. I am SO pleased to receive this census information even though there is still a big "if" involved. It puts me one step closer in tracing this family across the ocean.

It is a pity that the census form didn't leave space for the spouse's name and those of the children but that is the way it was done in the USA in the early years.

Thanks again,

Sharon

I think we are kinfolk. Theodore Dwight Ormsby was the son of Caroline Elizabeth (Freeman) Ormsby and Theodore Dwight Ormsby. Caroline (Carrie) died in Davidson County Tennessee in the early 1920's. I have yet to find where and when Theodore Dwight Ormsby senior died and is buried. He died after the death of his brother in 1862. Theodore's mother (Clarissa) and brother (Thomas Jefferson Ormsby), who was killed in the Civil War, are buried in Alabama. Caroline Elizabeth Freeman and Theodore Dwight Ormsby married in Travis County Texas. I am researching the Freeman side of the family for my husband. Lets share.

Samuel Dougherty/Mary Swan McElhatton, married c. 1830 in Londonderry

Mary Swan McElhatton (born circa 1805) married Samuel Dougherty (born circa 1811) in Londonderry, Northern Ireland around 1830. I have no documentation for Mary's maiden name but it is probably "McElhatton" or some variation of it.

The couple's first three (of 9) children were born in Ireland: Mary Dougherty (1832) and twins Lavinia and Nancy Dougherty (1837). Mary was my great grandmother.

The family emigrated shortly after the birth of the twins as their fourth child Elizabeth was born circa 1838/9 in the United States. They are thought to have landed in Pennsylvania.

After a short stay in the USA the family continued on to Ontario, Canada where the remaining five children - all boys - were born: Samuel Jr., John, George, William James, and Robert. The boys were born between 1842 and 1855. Samuel died (cholera?) shortly after the birth of the last child.

The family appears in the 1851/2 Canadian Census living in Stamford Twp., Welland County, Ontario. Stamford Township is now part of the popular tourist destination of Niagara Falls, Ontario.

I have not been able to trace back either Samuel's Dougherty family or the McElhattons. It is possible there is some connection between the McElhattons and McLeans but this information comes from family lore only and is not documented. It is also possible the "Swan" name is a connected family.

I would appreciate ANY help to learn more about my Dougherty/McElhatton ancestors.

Sharon
Welland, Ontario, Canada

Hi Joan,
I've only just started tracing ancestry and have not yet accessed detailed records.
I don't have any more facts about the Smyth family, but will ask my aunt (Caroline's youngest daughter), she also has a Smyth family bible, which I saw a few years ago and I have an undated, unidentified photo, that we think is Matthew and Jemima.
Anecdotal and guesswork as follows though-
The Smyths were Catholics, until they fell out with the church after the death of a wife.
The Smyths had been wealthy, until their property was maliciously destroyed by fire, but that they had a shoe business.
Is it possible that in 1901 Helen worked in a family shop?
A male Smyth married twice.
The England Census 1911 shows a George Smyth living in an Institute, Marlborough, Wiltshire.
The 1911 census shows Jemima was married for 26 years, which suggests she married in 1878.
Florence b 1874 and possibly a Matthew b 1872, could have been children of a first marriage.
It also shows Jemima had 8 children 6 living. There are 8 births matching that-
1878	Helen
1880	Thomas Saunders
1882	James
1884	Hugh Alexander
1886	John
1887	Jemima Victoria
1889	Caroline
1892	William Best
Caroline lived at 8 Newry St, until her death in early 1950s.
William moved to Suffolk, England, m 1919, d 1959, had 5 children.
Helen, I think lived in Scotland.
Possibly, one went to the U.S., and one to Australia, but they may be children of the above.

Shelagh
Good Evening Shelaelif,

Since posting my initial query to the message board, I have found out more about the Matthew/Jemima family.
You are correct, Jemima was married to Matthew, so it is your family that I am keen to know about.
The four year old George, (born in Ballymena) mentioned in the 1901 Census, is not my Uncle George, my Uncle was James George Smyth, born in Belfast in 1902, he died in Canada in 1941, I never knew him.
In about 1906 my Gparents, George and Lizzie, had fallen on hard times, young George was taken in by Barnardo's, sent to a home in England, and then on to Canada in 1912.
My Father John emigrated to Canada before 1930.
I was born in Canada.
The connection to your family is a bit of a mystery.
A couple of years ago I contacted Barnardo's, and they sent me (James) George's records.
There was a copy of a letter written by Barnardo's, in November 1913, to Mrs. J.S.Smyth, 127 Euston St.Belfast.
Jemima was at this address in 1911, and when Helen Kennedy died,in Sept. 1913, she died at 127 Euston St. Belfast., so we can conclude that Jemima was in 127 Euston St.Nov. 1913.
I do not have a copy of the letter that Jemima sent to Barnardo's, but I have emailed Barnardo's to see if they overlooked it when the sent me the other information.
It is obvious that the letter from Barnardo's, was in response to an enquiry from Jemima, asking for information about young George.
I am therefore concluding there must be a family connection.
The 1901 Census shows that Jemima was born in Ballymena,
and that Matthew was born in Kirkinriola, which is just outside Ballymena.
My GParents, George and Lizzie, were born in Belfast in 1881.
Matthew was 30 years older than my Grandfather George, so the Smyth connection could be through my GGfather, John and Matthew, but I have no information about this.
I would appreciate any information that you might have.
Thank you very much,

Joan

I know when he came to Cda.I also know she wrote to him during the war,she knew his sister Martha. I believe she came her with Mary Ann McMullen, they said they were cousins, but we think they were mother & daughter.
Louise

Hi Elaine,
Would you believe I live in Canada as well! Not positive about the spelling, but hubby's grandmother gave Mary Ann McMullen, as her mother & Josephy Currie as her father on her marriage certificate in Montreal, 1920.She was born 01 Dec. 1894, Belfast. Her name being Jane Elizabeth Currie, possibly Corry. I did find a Joseph Wilkinson Currie, wife Mary Ann in the 1901 Irish Census, he died in 1911 after the census was taken. He was listed as a seaman, 2nd.mate,then 3rd. engineer. children - Jane Elizabeth, Matilda,Hannah Sarah, William James,Frederick & Joseph. all born Belfast. I am not sure about this though.
Yes please check your tree.
Louise

thanks,

I am unsure whether is the city, parish of just the county and therein lies my dilemma. I visited Belfast sometime ago, but was unable to locate his name on any of the census or valuation records in the PRO. His military records only state that his birthplace was Derry. Its a puzzle.
Try this site, it has alot of information on Co. Derry, plus fragments of 1831 census, you'll have to allow for misspellings of that name

http://londonderry.wordpress.com/geneology/geneology/

Hi, I am searching for birthplace of Thomas McEnaney. Thomas left Ireland in 1850 to come to America with his wife Margaret Grant. Thomas served in 13th Regiment of Foot in Belfast in 1850. He listed his birthplace as Derry - but I do not know whether city or parish. His age was approximately 20 to 30 when he left Ireland.

Interested in any information about this family and possible birthplace of Thomas.

Thanks for the quick reply - unfortunately the only record of his marriage does not list parents. I haven't yet been able to track down a more detailed copy. I will keep on trying to find parents. It may have been Harold - as his son was named Harold John as were two more generations.

The Orange Lodge doesn’t have any comprehensive membership database, at least not for the 1800s. And it was a prohibited organisation for some years in the 1850s and 1860s, a by-product of which is that few records have survived, so I doubt you’ll find any useful records from them. (Sadly). Not sure what I can suggest that might be practical in this situation.
