Alexander Richard Roe Frederic County, Md/Winchester, Va

Classification: Query
Surnames: Roe/ McCloskey
I am a descendant of Alexander Richard Roe. He is my great-great grandfather via his son, Silas Grant Roe who was the father of my grandfather, James Russell Roe, Sr who fathered my father, James Russell Roe, Jr. I have followed several threads on my gg grandfather, but sadly none have parental information and I am hoping by starting a new thread I may get lucky. I understand he was born in Ulster Co Ireland and sometime afterwards came to the US to settle in the Frederic Co, Md area. I also know a number of the Roe ancestors have also settled in the Winchester, Va area. (This is where my grandfather/father originated) After reading several threads, I was informed that the "Roe" name may actually be a nickname for a particular surname, McCloskey, in Ireland. I understand this to be a means to differentiate between the various ones. Guess there are a good deal of McCloskeys in Ireland. I am hoping someone can provide me some additional information on this family so I can move past this 4 yr dead end. I am willing to share any of my family information on his family/descendants and spouses.

Thank you. Rose Marie (Roe) Thompson

heres my attempt
Hi Rose Marie (Roe) Thompson
my Advice is stay away from McCluskey, keep searching irish records for Roe itself until further exhausted. You don’t mention sources tried

Roe in Ireland
713 Roe in Irish census 1911
60 Roe in Ulster about 1860s Griffiths valuation see http://www.failteromhat.com/
which breaks down[and also gives civil parish see irish tithes item later
Antrim 6
Armagh 4
Cavan 17
Derry 9
Down 2
Fermanagh 9
Monaghan 9
Tyrone 4
so all 9 counties involved
1848 23 Feb 1854 J. P. Roe from Montreal Canada visits Belfast see http://www.dippam.ac.uk/ied/records/29958

the next earlier census substitute is the irish tithes applotment books 1823-1838
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/r... on the 26 counties it lists 415 Roe, but no Alexander.. The 6 counties ie Northern ireland [original books in Belfast PRONI, visitors or paid searchers only} are now available to search by civil parish in each county , but that is a huge job unless narrowed by selcetoing out and looking up each civil parish say listed by Griffiths index seehttp://www.irishgenealogyhub.com

1796 flax growers of Ireland see http://www.failteromhat.com/ more civil parishes named
Antrim none
Armagh none
Cavan none
Derry Roe Thomas Tamlaght Ocrilly Derry
Down Roe Rev. Mr. ??? Kilclief Down
Fermanagh Roe Thomas Kinawley Fermanagh
Monaghan none
Tyrone none

1740 9th March 1740 Edward Roe charged as a Vagabond in Dublinsee http://www.dippam.ac.uk/ied/records

1740 Protestant householders in Tamlaght O Crilly Parish County Londonderry see http://www.ulsterancestry.com/ShowFreePage.php?id=151
Thos Roe
Fras. Roe

Sites worth trying
http://apps.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_eCatNI_IE/SearchPage.asp... contain 323 references to Roe
Belfast newsletter index http://www.ucs.louisiana.edu/cgi-bin/belfst/Search.cgi needs patient and your own search on each page shown. I gave up without fathers name of
Alexander Richard Roe

Your Roe only Irish clue is Ulster
Alexander Richard Roe (1794 Ulster - 1871) m Alice Maria Shuler Roe (1831 - 1902)
children
Silas Grant Roe b 1859
etc
Good luck jimsanssouci PS somewhere I came across a Lord Roe in 1610 buying up land in ireland, if he sent relatives to look after these lands that might be the start of English [Norman]Roes in Ireland. if not then you are going to get lost into the Irish history of Roe ie mcluskey etc or macinroe or etc I didnt find any Roe in the Scottish planters etc
