Some of the information may be available online, depending on when your Irish ancestors lived. Civil registration of vital records began for Roman Catholics in 1864 and for Protestants in 1845.

You may find transcriptions of some records on
www.familysearch.org (free)
www.emeraldancestors.com (paying subscription)
www.rootsireland.ie (pay per view)

If you are lucky enough that one of your families came from Drumragh, digital images of the Catholic Church records are online and searchable at
http://www.drumraghparish.com/archiver.asp (free)

Many records are held at the local level, so you will need to narrow your focus to the Townland and Parish level. Two books you may find useful
"Tracing Your Irish Ancestors" by John Grenham
"A New Genealogical Atlas of Ireland"

PRONI has recently put digital images of the Valuation Revision Books online. These records can help locate where your family lived.
http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/val12b.htm (free)

A personal visit to PRONI can be useful for vital records not available online.

If any of your families were still in Ireland in 1901 and 1911, the census for those years is online and searchable at

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ (free)

There are plans to digitize more records from Ireland, but that is a year or more away.
http://www.irishtimes.com/business/sectors/technology/librar...

Have a great trip and happy hunting!

Thanks for your reply. I have not been able to locate Robert Smyth in Tyrone land records although there are other Smyths here. Robert's son Hugh's marriage record says he's from Crossdernot & his wife Jane Booth is from Drummond (townland of Crossdernot) so this is where I have centered my search.

I have tried in vain to find William George Smyth's birth information. It should be in the civil records... but it's not turned up in ancestry, familysearch, findmypast, ancestryireland, rootsireland, emerald ancestors, etc.

If someone can find these folks, I would appreciate it!
I'm sure you know that you are searching for records BEFORE the beginning of civil registration in Ireland, so records are scarce to non-existent. At the very least, very difficult to find, unless you know the exact Church where the parties married or were baptized. With William George, you stand a slightly better chance, since civil registration for Protestants began in 1845.

Have you found Robert Smyth in Griffiths Valuation and the Revision Books? That location may help you pinpoint the Church.

Good luck!

I'm looking for a marriage record for Robert Smyth & Sarah Ann McIntyre in Tyrone or Derry around 1840, in a Presbyterian Church.

I have a hunch that these two met in Maghera, Derry, then married and moved to Pomeroy, Tyrone. Not necessarily in that order.

They had at least two sons: Hugh (b in Derry or Tyrone 1841) and William George (b Tyrone 1848-1850). Both sons emigrated to Canada in the 1860's.

Any help would be appreciated!

The 1852 marriage for Margaret in Massachusetts does not name parents; however, it does indicate that she was living in Nashua at the time. Believe this to be Nashua, New Hampshire. Wonder if this family in the 1850 US Census in Nashua, New Hampshire is related:

Early, Thomas, aged 30, laborer, born Ireland
Early, Polly, aged 26, born Ireland
Early, Patrick, aged 15, born Ireland
Early, Moriah L., aged 12, born Ireland
Early, Cate, aged 10, born Ireland
Early, John, aged 3, born New Hampshire
Early, Ann, aged 2, born New Hampshire
Early, Rosanna, aged 1, born New Hampshire

Polly is not the mother of the older children given the age difference, but is the mother to the youngest three which suggests a second marriage for Thomas in New Hampshire.

Marriage records at famiysearch.org suggests that Polly's maiden name was Jarvis.

Also in Nashua in the 1850 census is a Bridget Early, aged 23, single, born Ireland. I find the marriage of a Bridget Early, aged 21, of Lowell, Massachusetts to a John Lonergan of Nashua, New Hampshire in 1851. She is the daughter of Charles & Margaret Early.

I then find a marriage for a Bridget Early, aged 35, born Ireland, to a David Londergan, aged 46, in 1865 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. It says first marriage for both. Bridget's parents are given as John & Bridget. Either a coincidence or its the same person with different parents' names.

Hi Eileen
Thank you, what can I say. I have done a bit of research on my side of the family but found this too confusing to know how to start. It hadn't occurred to me to look at Scotlands People but I have just done that following your suggestion and they must have been there for Hugh to work at the Dalmellington Iron Company. It also gives the marriage date of the parents.
I hadn't found the families in 1911 and now I have details of where they come from which should narrow it down. I now have a whole weekend to play on the computer and follow up everything you have found for me. I can't wait - thank you again
Alison

Did you see that Hugh was enumerated twice in the 1861 census? Here's the other entry from Coxhoe, Co. Durham:

Kennedy, Thomas, Head, aged 26, married, coal miner, born Ireland
Kennedy, Isabella, Wife, aged 20, married, born Ireland
Kennedy, Hugh, Brother, unmarried, aged 19, coal miner, born Ireland
Wilson, David, Cousin, married, aged 23, coal miner, born Ireland
Wilson, Mary, Cousin, married, aged 22, born Ireland
Wilson, Martha, Cousin, aged 2, born Durham Leadgate

The Quarrington census only shows Thomas, Isabella & Hugh. Martha is not noted with them, so she is more likely the child of David & Mary Wilson (as noted in the above census).

You should find the marriage for Hugh, likely in Durham County, which should at least name his father, and hopefully, give you a more definite place of birth. What about death certificates for all of them.

I found an entry in the BMD index for the marriage of a Hugh Kennedy in Durham in 1861 (Volume 10a, page 336). He married either Eleanor Forster or Dorothy Fairless).

I will guess it was Dorothy, given this 1871 England Census entry in West Rainton, Co. Durham:

Kennedy, Hugh, Head, married, aged 28, coal miner, born Ireland, Co. Tyrone
Kennedy, Dorothy, Wife, married, aged 28, born Durham, Philadelphia
Kennedy, John, Son, scholar, aged 8, born Durham Cassopp
Kennedy, Eliza Jane, Daughter, aged 6, born Scotland Ayrshire
Kennedy, Thomas, Son, aged 2, born Durham West Rainton
Kennedy, Mary Ann, Daughter, aged 8 months, born Durham North Birchburn(?)

So, in between the two census, they were in Scotland which gives you an advantage. Find Eliza Jane's birth record in Scotland, and it may provide more information about Hugh's place of birth (the Scottish records are way more detailed than the English). ScotlandsPeople is the paid site from which to search and order certificates.

I did find the index entry at familysearch.org for the baptism:

Name: Eliza Jane Kennedy
Gender: Female
Christening Date:
Christening Place:
Birth Date: 10 Jun 1864
Birthplace: DALMELLINGTON,AYR,SCOTLAND
Death Date:
Name Note:
Race:
Father's Name: Hugh Kennedy
Father's Birthplace:
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Dorithy Firlass

There are other Kennedys who show up in Delmellington which may or may not be related.

The 1911 census gives a more exact place (Dungannon, Co. Tyrone). Dungannon straddles the border between Co. Armagh and Co. Tyrone. David may have been a cousin from slightly further away given the 1871 English Census in West Rainton:

Wilson, David, Head, married, aged 36, coal miner, born Co. Down, Ireland
Wilson, Mary, Wife, married, aged 30, born Co. Down, Ireland
Wilson, Martha, Daughter, aged 12, born Durham, Ludgate
Wilson, Mary Jane, Daughter, aged 9, born Durham Freehold Houses(?)

Kennedy brothers Thomas and Hugh

Hi. I have a letter from my aunt saying that my great great grandfather Hugh Kennedy b.1842 came over to Durham, from Tyrone with his brother Thomas Kennedy b.1835 and cousin David Wilson b.1838. They were all coal miners.
Thomas had a wife Isabella b.1841 also from Ireland and Thomas had a wife Mary b.1839 and in the 1861 Quarrington Hill, Durham census they had a daughter Martha b.1859 who was born in Durham Leadgate. My aunt's conclusion is that the three men came over in about 1859/9 and settled.
She took over this research from her mother who started in 1970 and they are still no further forward in finding the parents and family of Thomas and Hugh. I know that a lot of records in Ireland were burnt and I am not sure how to start this search but if anyone can help I would appreciate it, I would love to use technology to help them since they have never used a computer and if I don't help I don't think that they will ever sort this out.
Thanks
Alison

Rosanna & Margaret Early - County Tyrone

My 2nd great grandmother was Rosanna Early (1828-1091). Her obituary states she was from County Tyrone. She married Owen McFarland from County Leitram (1818-1898). They married in Boston in 1849. Their first child was born in Boston. The rest of their 8 children were born in San Francisco. The children were Mary E., Helen Frances, John Bernard, Margaret A., Annie Gertrude, Isabella C., Charles Peter and Rosanna Catherine.

Rosanna's sister was Margaret Early (1835 to 1884). She married John Henry O'Brien (1831-1878). Both died in San Francisco. Their 5 children were born in California. They are Charles Anthony, John Francis, James, Joseph Henry and Clara Marie.

I have all of the obituaries and burials. I am trying to find out when they arrived and where they came from in Tyrone. Their death, burial and obituaries only list County Tyrone.

I would appreciate any help. Thank you,

Martha
Dont know much about him but he had a son Michael born in 1851, who may or may not be a brother of the lady you are researching. Michael had 2 children - Michael Jnr (my granfather) and Mary Alice Bradley. Michael Jnr had 3 children - Michael, James ( my father ) and Nancy

Dont know if this is any use to you at all?

Mark - mbradley720@gmail.com

Hi Michael,

There is an excellent group researching County Tyrone ancestors at http://www.cotyroneireland.com/

There are extracts from the Assizes (court records) at http://www.cotyroneireland.com/criminals/assizesAug1827.html and "Elenor Smith" is listed as "Indicted for larceny - transported seven years"

So - some part of the records have survived.

Suggest you post on the CoTyrone mailing list and ask for someone who can get your more details. Len Swindley does the assizes transcriptions.

Good luck!

Ann

Hi,
Your Robert Means coming from Fermanagh in the 1718 voyage would be very unusual. Reason is, that this first mass-migration was largely church centered. The minister who came with Means and his group was from Garvagh, County Londonderry. I would suggest looking to Londonderry or Antrim for your origins. A Robert Means is in the Antrim 1669 Muster Rolls in the Dunluce region.
Email me at cb1718project@gmail.com.

I come up against a brick wall with trying to find out more about an ancestor, one George Henry Evans - a protestant clergyman who served in India and then in a parish near Bristol - the 1861 England census says he was born in 1806 in County Tyrone, Ireland. He attended Trinity College Dublin and graduated B.A. 1828, M.A. 1832. Someone who was visiting Dublin looked at the Alumni Dublinenses and said the name of his father was given as "John" - but I cannot get over there myself - it is likely his father attended TCD as well and maybe brothers.

The next instance recorded is his marriage in Cheltenham in 1840 where he was listed as a clergyman with the East India Company. He married Maria Harriet Farrington [b 5 November 1820] daughter of Lt.-Col. Sir Henry Maturin Farrington, 3rd Bt. and Jane Curry.

I have followed his life and career thereafter to his death, but I cannot go any further back with him, cannot find his parents, etc. btw The name George re-occurs - he called one of his sons George, and a grandson was called George.

Any help/guidance would be appreciated.

If you search the local phone directory, you will find 3 people named McCaffrey in the Shanco area (postal code BT76). I suggest you look them up and contact them to see if they are connected with your family. If they are not, they may well know who you should contact.

http://www.ukphonebook.com/?cd=tels&uen=GQ9aqxUMYftSv4ku...
Hi Dan,

Yes, I've looked in the current business directories and phone books for Inishatieve and found McGarrity names currently there.

I've heard of Peter Kerr's book, but I've never had the opportunity to dig into it personally.

I've found my 2xg GF Michael McGarrity in the 1901 and 1911 census, still living in the area, with youngest daughter, Margaret. Margaret came to the US in 1912, leading me to believe that Michael died in early 1912. There is a death index notation that would appear to be him.

I've also found him in the Griffiths Revision Books, which recently came online on PRONI. If you have not yet looked at those, there is a wealth of information.

Michael McGarrity and Sarah Hughes married before Civil Registration, so I have not yet been able to find a record of their marriage. The local RC Church register seems to stop about 1857, so there is a gap of about 7 years when I cannot trace them.

Thanks,
Ann

Hi,
There were and I believe still are McGarrity or related families in Inishatieve townland, Termonmaguirk parish, county Tyrone. The nearest town is Carrickmore.

I have a little book entitled "Families and Holdings in the Townland of Innishatieve, Carrickmore" by Peter Kerr.
Peter Kerr is a priest of the archdiocese of Armagh and my third cousin, one generation removed.

The book on page 22 tells of John McGarrity coming to Innishatieve in 1855 after marrying Mary Boyle.(This Mary Boyle was a niece of my great grandfather Patrick Boyle who died in Innishatieve about 1842.His widow and their family left then for Ontario in Canada.

Mary was the daughter of Conor Boyle, who came to Innishatieve from nearby Ackinduff townland in Killeeshill parish. Conor's wife was Mary O'Neil. The parents of John McGarrity were James McGarrity and Sarah Rafferty.

The family of John McGarrity and Mary Boyle were John, Peter, Con and Kate. Peter took over John's holding and married Cassie Hamill. Their family were Roseanne, Mary Ellen and Kitty. The son John McGarrity, after going to England, returned to the Innishatieve area and farmed. Unfortunately the book doesn't say anything about his family.

Kitty (Kate) married Packie McCallum. They continued in Innishatieve and raised a large family there.Their son, another Packie married Ita Donnelly and told over the holding.

Does any of this ring any bells with you? If so let me know. I'll see if there are any other tidbits in the book. I realize this message is dense, but I hope understandable.

I've visited Innishatieve several times over the years. We visit with Bridget and Teresa Kerr, maiden sisters of Father Peter Kerr.

I live in Catonsville, a near suburb of Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
Dan Boyle
