father of John ARDAGH, married in Thurles, Co. Tipperary 1820 - 1844

John Ardagh married Margaret Ann Lanigan in Thurles, Co. Tipperary sometime between 1820 and 1844. They had 7 children born in Thurles. They were named James John, Thomas, Catherine, Daniel, Mary, John and Patrick. I believe John died in Tipperary and his wife Margaret took their seven children to Australia approx 1850 in order to stay with her brother-in -law (don't know his name). James John later went on to live in New Zealand and started up the Ardagh clan there. The other 6 children remained in Australia to carry on the Ardagh name there. I'd like to know about John ARDAGH.
Who were his parents?
When and where he was born.
When did he die?
Who was John's brother in Australia?
I am an Ardagh descendant (from the Patrick ARDAGH (1524-1637) & Janet MYLES line. I'd like to see how this john I speak of fits into our tree - listed on Ancestry.com.
Rather a tall order, but can you please help?

Interested in corresponding with anyone researching John Quigley and Honora Cooney, believed to be from Parish Castletownarra, emigrated to Chicago with daughter Nora in 1849, and had a total of ten children. Another relative Penelope Cooney appears as godmother to Nora's sister at St. Patrick's Church in Chicago in early 1860s. Said to be distant relatives of Archbishop James Edward Quigley born in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada in 1855, baptized at St. Gregory's Church in Oshawa. Archbishop's emigrant ancestors were James Quigley, and Mary Lacey[Lacy] who left the townland Carrigatogher, Parish of Burgesbeg(Youghal) in 1847. Archbishop's grandparents were Martin Quigley and Elizabeth Kelly, and "Honest" John Lacy. Malachy Quigley, another son of Martin and Elizabeth Quigley, married in Oshawa to Margaret Killen in 1844. Many descendants of all of these families.

KINGSMILL family near Roscrea, Ireland

I am trying to find out more about my Irish Kingsmills.

My GGGG grandfather, Henry Kingsmill (b. ca. 1745), was a retired soldier, having served in Gibraltar in the 59th Reg. Foot, following on, living in Borris in Ossory (living there in 1824), I presume where he held land. He was a sub-sheriff.

It would appear to me that most of Henry's family of his generation and that preceding were military men. It also appears to me that many of the family may well have been members of the Royal Irish Constabulary and I know two of his sons came to Australia where they worked as sheriff's bailiffs in NSW.

Several other cousins also came to NSW and worked in the early prison system, policing or as bailiffs. I suspect that this was a government initiative of the time using former RIC men, as I do know that the Victorian Police force developed from the RIC and used former RIC men.

Looking at the scattering of Kingsmill's it would appear that they were closely related, with Kingsmills located at Donaghmore, Borris in Ossory and Templemore, all being in close vicinity to Roscrea, the nearest market town.

Incidentally, a foundation Connemara stallion by the name of Mervyn Kingsmill was bred by the Countess de Vesci in nearby Abbey Leix during the mid 1960-70's, and I am looking into the connection given the proximity to our Kingsmill clan.
http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/mervyn+kingsmill

I am wondering if anyone had any further insight into navigation of our Kingsmill family in Ireland? I would be most pleased to make contact with you! I am having some trouble in tracing Henry's generation's preceding. I have included some excerpts following that you may wish to comment on also. In a couple of months I will be visiting Ireland and hope to learn more about the family whilst there.

Cheers

Maree Worthington

Exerpt
Irish Migrants in the Canadas, a new approach

By Bruce S. Elliott

Published 2004 McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP

ISBN:0773513213

p. 159

No early cluster of Tipperary Protestants formed in Toronto in the 1820’s and 1830’s as had in Montreal, but Toronto was then a much smaller centre. Nonetheless, a few gentlemen and prosperous merchants established themselves in the city at various times. The first of these was George Kingsmill of Templemore, a former soldier who came to Toronto in 1829 and ran a provisional store in Market Street. He later became high bailiff and an aide to Sir Francis Bond Head during the Mackenzie Rebellion. Kingsmill was an uncle of Thomas Frazer Kingsmill who came to London in 1865 via Georgia and Toronto and established the well-known London department store, Kingsmill’s.

KINGSMILL’s Website

http://www.kingsmills.com/aboutus/index.html

Our Heritage

In 1865 Thomas Frazer Kingsmill, an Irish immigrant, opened a dry goods store on the main street of London, Ontario, Canada. Over the years, the Kingsmill family has continued to offer fine products and services from this location. The family history represents a proud tradition of retail service to residents of Southwestern Ontario and beyond.
Is anyone familiar with Patrick Dougherty/Doherty (b. abt 1812) who married Judy "Julie" Gleason (b. Abt 1812) they had the following children before they immigrated to Canada in 1844-45. Honora b. 1831m. Daniel O'Keefe, Michael b.1833, m. Winifred Cain, Mary b.1839, m. Patrick Hogan, John b. 1841, m. Ellen Bennett, Julia "Judy" b. abt 1844, m. William Troy. All of Patrick & Judy's children were married in Biddulph, Middlesex Co., Ontario, Canada.

Parish records from the Tipperary North History Research Service confirm all the births except Honora who was born before the records commence. There is no record of Patrick & Judy's marriage. Research indicates that Patrick died in Lucan, Ontario, Canada in the mid 1860's and that Judy died about 1869. It is recorded that their son Michael migrated south to Dubuque, IA in 1870 after Judy's death.

(Baptismal sponsors for Patrick & Judy's children recorded at the RC Parish in Cloughjordan were; John Kelly, Margaret White, Tom Quigley, Judy Kelly, Denis Dohrty, W. Carroll, John Neill and Elenore Tierney; 1833 through 1844)

I am trying to connect with either Patrick or Judy's family lines. I have absolutly nothing on the Gleeson/Gleason line. I have seen several of the Gleesons in the Biddulph/Lucan area but have not been able to connect them. There were many Tipperary families in the area, many from Nenagh.

I have strong research on Patrick & Judy's children, but nothing on Patrick's parents and above, nor anything on Judy's family in any direction.

Skip Dacy
Omaha, Nebraska

Can anyone tell me how to request a search of the burial records for St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Cashel? I'm searching for my ancestors, John Hickey and his wife, Margaret Luby/Looby, who I'm "guesstimating" died most likely in the 1860s or 1870s. I have a copy of a letter from a relative who says that their son, Laurence Hickey, returned to Ireland from America in his later years (probably 1890s) and erected a monument at his parents' graveside. Hoping to find their dates of death and perhaps other family members buried with them. As far as I know, they had at least these children, perhaps more: Ellen, Elizabeth, Margaret and Laurence. Their daughters may have married men by the name of O'Dea and Smith. Laurence died in the U.S. and most likely also his sister, Margaret. There may be connections to these related families: Barrane, Brown(e), Cormick, Feehan, Green(e), Greney, Heffernan, Hogan, Mc Grath, O'Dea, Ryan, Scully, Smith. Many thanks!

Joni Leffler
TX
My sister and her family are traveling to Ireland in April and she would like to visit what we believe is the old homestead of some relatives. My great grandmother, Katherine Fitzgerald who came to America in the latter half of the 1800's. She married by great grandfather John C. Mullins and settled in Hudson, NY.

The last known address for Katherine and her family in Ireland was 19 Upper Irishtown Rd in Clonmel. My sister would really like to visit the house (if it's still there) and hopefully the church where my g-grandmother might have attended to see if there are any records, etc. that may be of any use in researching our family tree.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to what Catholic Church my great grandmother may have attended in Clonmel and how I might get hold of them prior to my sisters visit?

Thanks for the help.

Seeking Tipperary/Irish based information regarding John Hemfield/Hemfil/Henfield, born March, 1826 at Templemore. Parents' names unknown at this stage.

John came to Australia on the Beejapore, 1857, aged 31 - name transcribed as Henfield. It does not seem that any family accompanied him on the voyage.

In Australia he generally used the name Hemfil, but sometimes Hemfield. So not really sure of his correct name.

Any information or connections appreciated.

Birth/Baptisim - Clonmel - abt 1834 - John ROONEY

So far I have traced my gt gfather John Rooney to having been born in Clonmel, Tipperary in abt 1834 or 1833.

His father's name was Peter Rooney and his occupation is given as "soldier" on John's 1853 English marriage certificate. I understand there was a military barracks in Clonmel in the 1830's.

John's mother's name was Julia, maiden name presently unknown, and very possibly from Co Galway

They were Catholic; and I have now tracked John in UK from 1851 onwards. On the 1851 Brit census, John was living with his mother Julia, and there did not appear to be any other children. On John's 1853 marriage cert. Peter is deceased.

Any help as to where I could find the above menioned record, or any other info. such as Peter & Julia's marriage, would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
I am looking for information on Patrick Nolan who was born in the 1820's(I don't know the exact year)in Clonmel Tipperary. He married Ellen Cummins and their two sons James and Patrick were born in 1845 and 1847. I think the family came over during the Famine in Ireland as further children were born later over here, my husband is descended from their youngest child John born on 6th May 1865 in Liverpool. Could anyone tell me where I may be able to get their birth and marriage records? Are there many Catholic churches in Clonmel where we could come over and look through their records. I would be most grateful for any information that anyone can give me no matter how small. Thank You Ann

Looking for information about Ann BRENNAN who was born in about 1819 in (according to the UK 1851 census) Monroe (?or Munroe), Co Tipperary. She married John LOVATT an English soldier in the 37th Regiment, who was discharged from the army in about 1851 when the family was living in Chatham, Kent. They had at least 4 children, John (b about 1844),Sarah (about 1847), James (about 1849( and Thomas (about 1850). Sarah was my great Great maternal grandmother. I'd be very interested to find evidence of Ann Brennan's birth/baptism, and also if possible her marriage, since I can't trace it in England and wonder if she may have been married in Ireland.

Does anyone know the exact location in Tipperary, or have any knowledge of this home. I have attached the picture in the hope that it might help in finding out the exact locale.

Our grandfather, Michael Hogan left Ireland as a baby and came to the United States. He was born in 1864 in Ireland, County Tipperary. His father was John Hogan and his mother was Bridget O'Connor Hogan. We think they left Ireland as a family in 1864 or 1865, we are not sure which. That's about all we know. On arrival in US they lived in Pennsylvania.
We have visited Ireland several times and went to a heritage center in Nenagh, but they said they needed more information. If anyone has any ideas for us to find our family ancestors, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Eleanor Hogan Fields

TOBIN Glendalough, Clonmel

I have been searching for the ancestors of my great grandfather for some
time without success. He is Michael Godfrey TOBIN from Clonmel, Tipperary
and he immigrated to Australia around 1900. His parents are Patrick David
TOBIN (farmer) and Norah LAWLER.

Yesterday I found a reference in Landowners in Ireland 1876, page 178:
Patrick David Tobin - Glendalough, Clonmel
John Tobin - Glendalough, Clonmel
Margaret Tobin - Glendalough, Clonmel
Patrick Henchy Tobin - Glendalough, Clonmel
Patrick Thomas Tobin - Glendalough, Clonmel
Thomas Tobin - Glendalough, Clonmel
William Tobin - Glendalough, Clonmel

Other families connected to this area were COFFEY, CROLTY, MARA.

What do you think? Am I clutching at straws - is Patrick David Tobin
too common a name in Clonmel to think it is a connection? Does anyone else
have links to this town?

I look forward to any replies.

Warm regards

Diane
Sydney, Australia
HOGAN from Cashel area of Tipperary

I'm looking for the parents of Patrick Hogan, born c1850, married to Margaret Foley.
They had two children that I know of, Bridget c1870, and Patrick b10 aug 1872.

The son, Patrick was a farrier in Cashel, and married three times. First to Johanna Meehan, who died while pregnant in a horse-and-trap accident. The baby survived and was named Josephine, nicknamed "Sis." Her older brother was named Patrick b1898, and fought in the 1916 rising. He emmigrated to NYC after that and had two children with Mary Anne Cullen, my grandfather Patrick and g-aunt Mary. Sis married Paddy Stapleton and had two children, Thomas and Geraldine.

The second wife was Mary Hickey (married in 1912) and died with no children of her own.

The third wife was Margaret Minihan and they had five children, some of whom emmigrated to the US. They were Michael dc1995, Sean bc1929 d24Jan1940, Greta, Mary and Breeda. Mary and Breeda are still living in Cashel, and Greta had two children, one of whom was named Geraldine.

If any of this fits with your tree, let me know.  I am interested in missing living relatives, but *particularly* interested in the parents of Patrick Hogan born c1850.  The Tipperary Family History Research Centre has no records for his baptism, so either he was baptized outside of the diocese of Cashel and Emly or the record has been lost/destroyed/etc )-;

Contact me at anthony@valentino.to
