My mothers, mothers name was Therese daughter of Catherine and Michael McDermott who came to the US in the 1800s. So Michael and Catherine were my great grandparents. I did not know my grandmother she died when she was in her 30s. My mother died ten years ago however she has two sisters Marie and Patricia who live in Mass. Michael and Catherine had a son named Patrick I would say we are most likely related.

Pat,
Thanks for the excellent explanation and advice. As you suggest, here are
the family names and what I've found so far. My wife's paternal grandmother ,
Catherine Kevill, was born in Preston, Lancs, c.1875, to James and Ellen Kevil from
Ireland. (James says in the census that he is from Sligo, but was baptised in Boyle,
Roscommon.) The Kevils died in Liverpool, and we never knew Ellen's maiden name,
or whether they married in Ireland or England. It appears that they emigrated
separately, and met in England. Without going into too much detail, it seems
that James' parents are Patrick Kevil and Bridget Lavan (Patricii and Brigdam;
yes, I've discovered that church records use Latin names!) James was baptised in
Boyle in 1835. Bridget is the mother I was referring to; she and Patrick are listed as
parents to James and two brothers, and Bridget is also mother to 10 others baptised in
Boyle between 1828 and 1848. Apparently, Bridget came to England with the Kevil boys,
c.1850. In the 1851 census they are lodgers in a home in Preston, and in 1861 she
is Head of Household in another Preston home. James married Ellen shortly thereafter.
James, Ellen, and a son James who died young are buried together in Liverpool.
I think that Ellen is Ellen Brady, born in Ireland c.1846. In fact, there are matching
BMD marriage records for James Kevil and Ellen Brady, married in Preston in
1862. I've sent for the actual certificate, which will hopefully clear up some parentage
questions as well. I'll post anything interesting that I find out. Thanks again,
Bob

Hello, Hope you are still around as this is a fairly old post. My grandfather Michael Naughton, born 1902, had a Sister, who became a Nun, her birth name was Bridget. My family line also has Flynn, Kelly, Burke in it and I believe that there are Moran's, Conroys, Fitzgeralds as well, one Connaughton recently married to a cousin; My Uncles and some aunts still live in Roscommon (Skevalley, Ballinasloe, Kiltoom, Camlagh) and Cousins in Galway and Dublin....lots of family over there. I am first generation here...and finding I need to split my charts into three or four, getting to large to manage. Pat (Patricia Ann)

The Irish have very large families and in the Roscommon area, actually, in much of Ireland in the 1600,1700,1800 and 1900's, not so much now...the forenames were repeated over and over the generations. Under Irish Naming conventions, the first male is named after the father's father, the first female after the mother's mother, the 2nd son, after mother's father, 2nd female after mother's mother, the third male/female was after the mother/father and then followed siblings both sides, and one child might die and the next be given the same name. In Roscommon, a genealogy expert was often used to "make" sound marriages as the average family of children was about 7, and the surnames, being as there were acres of family farms and such, were somewhat limited and people tended to marry within the families in an area. So, i.e. Mary Tansey might be listed as mother to Frances Tansey, however, her maiden name could have been Flynn, Carty, Fallon, Naughton, Kelly, Doran, or whatever...but you will see Mary having lots and lots of babies...it's hard to explain...have another look see. Also, the spellings in the old records are recorded as spoken, not necessarily as accurately written and additionally some of the records are in the Gaelic language or the baptisms may have the names in Latin....be flexible. Check out also the National Cencus 1901/1911 and the National Archives of Ireland, they are free websites; as well as Griffith's Valuations for the 1800's which gives lots of information on family names, lands, parishes, towlands, etc. and check out other internet sites to find out the various names/and changes as to the parishes/towlands, counties, DED's, baronies and unions and what all that means....cause that in and of itself, is confusing until you get a handle on it and I've visited Ireland twice and still have family there. Good luck. You should post your wife's families names. Pat

PS, I so believe that your hints connect with my family, as there are Dolans too in the family line: my Uncle Patsy Naughton's wife, nee Ita Kelly has a dress shop in town for the longest time (he's a farmer and sheep/cattle rancher); and Featherstone is showing up amongst the names that you will see with my family names in the same areas such as Flynn, Naughton, Fallon, Dolan, Carty, Meares, Mayers, Finneran, and oh my gosh so many more, with a repeating of course of all the first names through so many generations, we are loaded with Mary's, Patrick's, Michaels, Roses, Margarets, John's, Kathleens, Martins, Bridgets and Bridget Teresa's, Michael John's, Catherines, Kate Anne's and this on both my maternal and paternal sides...et al................so; it makes it real hard to do the research. I looked up the old Irish naming conventions and that helps. Thanks for your kind interest, pat

Hi,

The names Catherine and Timothy are not familiar to me, but I know Strokestown was not that far away from Mantuar/Cloonkerin. However, in Roscommon County the surname Cox was a fairly popular one....I'll keep my eyes open for the names, though, you never know when something will click. My Coxes settled in the Oranges, however, the Irish on my father's side all settled in Elizabeth, NJ (down the port). I'm pretty familiar with St. Patrick's records and other Catholic records from the, so I will keep my eyes open for the names when I research there, too. My Elizabeth NJ Irish surnames are Kenny, Hoar, Smith and Fleming.
I dont know much at all about her.. but am going to try to find out. she would have been born in Sligo around 1872. maybe this is my grandma that you mentioned in the list of kids...
just started researching. there used to be a hardware store in sligo town with this name. I talked to the owner in 2001 and he wasnt at all interested that we were probably related!

Baptism records: same mother for 14 kids, 10 different fathers

I traced one of my wife's ancestors to Roscommon, Ireland,
where he was baptized as a Catholic in 1835. I thought I had the parents from the baptism record, but I was surprised to see that the woman listed as mother appears in that role for 14 kids with 10 different fathers over a 20 year period. What is going on here? My initial guess is that she is a sort of "proxy mother" when the mother died in childbirth, but being Jewish myself, I have no idea if this kind if thing was common or what it means. Thanks for any insights.

You are welcome.

2)Yes, the marriage usually took place in the bride's parish if different. I'm sure there were exeptions.
Usually lst. children were also born in the bride's mother's home and if catholic were baptised quite quickly and can account for a couple living somewhere different from the
marriage and children's parish.

1) I wasn't able to make a connection between Clonagh & Clagnagh. Hopefully someone locally will answer as I have exhausted the resources I have.

In Queen's Co/Laois there is Clonenagh & Clonagheen Parish, Union of Mount Mellick

In Mayo is the Townland of Clagnagh, Parish Bekan, Union
Claremorris.

Clonagh was a Parish and a townland in Co.Queen's/Laois

You can look up Irish RC Parish maps just by googling. It
is with a pay website but no charges to look at the maps.

I have an old set of CD's from the Latter Day Saints now
www.familysearch.org with civil registrations. The dates are from 1864-1875 but the parents would of been born in the 40's. There are no Pidgeon's in Roscommon but there are other including:

Pat Pigeon and wife Catherine Convey/Convy childred within the dates above Michael, Catherine, Patrick, John
Swineford Spelled with no d.

The other is a Patrick Pidgeon and Bridget Kirwan Dublin

Good luck.

Thank you very much, Annette. I have my OS maps and Mitchell's Atlas now. I think the Pat Pidgeon is of interest, as his area is close to the Castlerea area where a possible Shannon cluster is found. William Pidgeon is possible but further away.

Questions for anyone:
1. Could the townland spelled Clonagh be the current one spelled Clagnagh?
2. Would a couple be more likely to be married in the bride's parish?

I would suggest you try Ireland Reaching Out (irelandxo.com). This is a free site where volunteers help with family research. You need to sign up first. Then you need to "join" the parish or parishes which interest you. You can then right an inquiry message to the parish. If you join Co. Roscommon, Kiltullagh parish, there is a volunteer there with family name Meehan. If anyone can help you, I think he can. Best of luck!!

Hi Patrick Donohoe (1835) and his son, Patrick (1867) were shoemakers/bootmakers in Roscommon. I don't know for certain if Patrick's father, John, was also a shoemaker - which would be the timeperiod you're asking about.

They lived in a small town (Leggatinty / Kanespark) between Bellanagare and the town of FrenchPark. It was a small house with an small adjacent building.

Family story says that Patrick (1867) used to make specialty shoes and would deliver them as far away as Galway - I don't know how far a young boy would travel. I never heard any stories about Typhoid, but I know little about the 1841-ish generation.

I'm searching for Gavil, an address in Loughglynn RC parish which is mostly in Tibohine CP. This address was given on the baptism record of Catherine Tully, 1833 (sponsor Michael Rogers). Parents: Michael and Honor Tully. I'm trying to identify the townland where this address would be found. If anyone has heard of it at all, please let me know. This Catherine may have been a sponsor for the baptism of Margaret Tully (1841) in the same or nearby area(parents Owen Tully and Margaret Donnellan), address unknown. Thank you!

Hi Shawn, I'm not a relative but I'm trying to help one of John Joseph Noone's Great grandson's make a tie to the Noones in Ireland. Griffith's valuation lists only one John Noone living in Strokestown, co. Roscommon in the period 1832 to 1850. It's not proof positive but there is a possibility that is the family you are looking for. Drop me a line and let me know if you are still looking for the Noone's. Do you by chance have an obituary for Mary Ellen Sheedy Noone. What is your source for showing Jeremiah Sheedy as her father and her hometown as Landscape Mallow?

Have you tried the public records office:www.groireland.ie
as it is parish records that were destroyed by fire along
with lots of other documents. You are the first I've heard who
has said the civil registrations were destroyed by fire and I've been helping people out for a long time? Or is the the long form.

www.irishgenealogy.ie has Dublin city parish records or at least some!

You could try for a parish record of her birth, you have both parents names: www.rootsireland.ie which will make it easier, you can also search for siblings with both parents names.

You probably have this but here goes anyway:

1901 Census: www.census.nationalarchives.ie

6 Tivoli Ave. Kingston Dedicated Election District, Dublin

Edward 49, RC, Kill, Co. I will have to look at other circumstantial evidence, like wives' names.

Yes I think you are probably right in your assessment and the names would be the head-tenants rather than the owner.

IN Griffiths you would see IN FEE meaning owned.

By the time of GV 1852 you see a Mary Wills, landlord John Blakeny with 172 acres which he rents/leases out various tenants but he doesn't own the land.

There is a Charles M. St. George as a landlord to a Robert Wills but he doesn't own the land that I can see. St. George is leasing land from Ecclestical Commrs.over 1000 acres and over 100 tenants.

From the few pages I looked at I couldn't see what Estate
they were on.
Thank you for the location of the record images. Now that I have browsed through all the entries for the Cloondahara townland, I see a pattern. The recorder grouped some entries with the heading "Cloondahara (Kelly)" and another with "Cloondahara (Wills)". Thus it looks like these are surnames inside the parentheses, perhaps an owner.

For anyone with experience with the Tithe Applotment Books, does this sound reasonable?

Thank you Annette for a very helpful reply. I had only been accessing to the Ancestry.com online records of the Tithe Applotment books. I made a spelling error in the title, and it should have read "Cloondahara Wills". Thank you for the link to the actual records in the National Archives. This is the page I found, and the heading at the top looks like "Cloondahara (Wills)" to me: http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//0...

I am looking for a man named Patrick Shannon who was born about 1800 and died about 1841 from a typhoid fever outbreak. I had found an 1832 entry for "Pat Shannon" in the Kilkeevan Parish with "Cloondahara Wills" in the townland field.

We also have a family story about some dispute about a will, so I am assuming that it was the land-owners' will, not my family member's. Patrick Shannon and wife died of fever, leaving a family of teen-agers and children. So, I don't believe it was Patrick's will.

The other person with the same parish and townland entry is a Thomas Shannon in 1832. I believe he might have been a brother, as there is a Thomas Shannon who migrated to the USA somewhat later, and settled in the same Massachusetts town as Patrick's teenage children did. This Thomas lived from 1795-1870, and his tombstone reads that he was from County Roscommon.

Shoemakers or Cobblers in Roscommon

We have a family story from about 1841 that a 7 year-old boy was sent to the cobbler shop to pick up a pair of repaired boots.

Are cobblers typically located in a larger town, as opposed to out in the farmlands?

How far could a child be expected to walk in the old days? A couple of miles? So far I have narrowed down possible locations to near Castlerea, near Boyle, or across the county border from Carrick-on-Shannon.

The rest of the story is that the boy could not read a sign on the door saying there had been typhoid fever in the cobbler's family. So the boy came home infected, and the fever later killed both his parents.

Does this story sound like it could be true? Or, does it sound like an embellishment?

You are looking for parish records. You can search an
Irish Heritage Foundation for birth and marriage records
depending on what records have survived. You have both names which is a real help in your search.

www.rootsireland.ie

Griffith Valuation 1857: www.askaboutireland.ie
There are 432 Murray's of which 14 named Peter
and 44 Burns

The parish's in common are Drum, Killukin, Kiltullagh, Roscommon.

Latin spellings

In 1822 there is a birth for an Eliza Burnes 26 Aug. 1822 fa: johanes (John) Burnes and mother Elizabetha Loughna, Boyle, Roscommon

Elizabeth 7 April 1830, Boyle
Patritii Burns and Bab Noon

These are from a CD from the Latter Day Saints - no longer
available - see www.familysearch.org

They are records from parish's whose records were not destroyed in the 1922 Four Courts Fire in Dublin

There is no marriage for this couple in the CD records I have but there are many more parish's.

Tithe Applotments 1823-1837: www.genealogy.nationalarchives.ie

212 Murray's 18 named Peter if Peter is named after father'
18 Burns, you could try comparing Parish's again to match up with the Griffith Murray & Burns.

The current on line telephone books shows 39 Murray's
and 4 Burns. Its hard to believe but you may find some families still in situ. You could try writing the 4 Burn's and see if you get any answers and you never know!

Would they still have been in Ireland for the 1901 or 1911
census? www.census.nationalarchives.ie

www.igp-web.com + Roscommon
www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom+Ireland+County

Annette Code

The Bridget I gave you was the only one on www.familysearch.org

They recently updated the website.

If the death certificate said she dyed a few days after childbirth then you should take that as a given. There were many reasons, excessive bleeding, placenta previa, septicemia you name it. The name John Flynn would be the person reporting the death to the registration district as he was next of kin.
Few parish's have deaths recorded in the registers unlike
baptism and marriages but fortunately due to civil registration you were able to get this information.

On an old CD set from the Latter Day Saints:

Bridgeta (Latin) born 8 June 1830, Killukin
Nicholai Elwood/Honor Elwood

Brigidam 28 Aug. 1833 Laughlin
Thomas Elwood/Mariae Regan

Bridget 17 Jan 1839 Strokestown
Thomas Elwood & Maria Devany

Brididam 18 Oct 1839 Killucan & Ballinameen
Richardi Elwood/Eleanorae Collins

Brigidam 3 June 1846, Killucan & Ballinameen
Gulielmi Elwood/Marie Hanly

Brigidam 27 Sept 1857 Loughlynn
Joannis (John) Elwood/Catharinae Giblin

These are specifically from parish's that the records were saved from the 1922 fire at the Four Courts, Dublin.

Annette Code

Although there are James Dillon's none to wife Bridget Conway or any Bridget.

I can only recommend www.rootsireland.ie and keep your fingers crossed the marriage belonged to a parish whose records are
available. She married Thomas Helford** on 20 Feb 1865 in Strokestown RC Church, Roscommon. Bridget was a 20 year old spinster whose residence was Mahon's Yard at the time of the marriage. Her father's name is shown variously as Thomas Fehely, Fehily, Feeley.

** Thomas' surname is given variously as Helford/Hilford/Ellwood/Telfer in records in Ireland and Scotland.

The first 3 children of Thomas and Bridget were born in Kilglass, Roscommon. (Ellen 1866, Mary Ann, 1868 and Michael 1870). Mary Ann was my great-grandmother, she was born specifically in Lavagh, Rooskey, Strokestown, Kilglass, Roscommon, Ireland.

The 4th child, Catherine, was born in 1874 in Edinburgh,Scotland; the 5th, Margaret was born 1876 in Moffat, Dumfrieshire, Scotland, Thomas was born 1879 in Wiston & Roberton, Lanark, Scotland; John in 1882 in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland (he died 1882 also), Sarah was born 1885 in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland

To date, I had not found any siblings for Bridget, but with your information about William and Thomas, I will do some research in Scottish records to see if I can make a connection. But as you can see from the birth dates above, Bridget and Thomas were not in Scotland until sometime prior to the 1874 birth of Catherine. If William and Thomas emigrated to the US in 1880-1882, this does not give too much of an overlap. I will concentrate on your dates of 1861-1881. You may know that the Scottish census was held every ten years in the 1861, 1871, 1881 year pattern, so that is fortunate - hopefully they will appear in all 3 years, depending on what month they arrived in/departed from Scotland. If William married in Scotland, his marriage record should show his parents' names. With real luck, that would reveal whether there is a connection to Bridget.

I will let you know if I make a connection.

Brigid
After reading this I called my mother--she was born in 1935, Muff Castlecoote Co. Roscommon. She can recall her father talking about a Paddy Glennon who worked in one of the family stores--Fetherston Bros. Athlone (I think it was on Connaught St.)--this would have been in the 1920's (?). The store was originally owned by William Fetherston (my grandfather's uncle) and when Willie died it passed to his (Willie's) brother Patrick.
My mother also said there was a store in Roscommon town called Dolan's. Don't know if any of this connects to your family--but thought I'd pass it on.
Marie Hughes

Patrick Earley was married to Bridget Elwood. This Patrick lived in Carrowbaun, Baslick. Bridget and John married 11 Feb 1886 so she couldn't have died in 1885. Bridget Earley died 25 December 1866 aged 25. I purchased the death record and I think it mentioned something about her dying a few days after childbirth. John Flynn was present at death. Thanks for the help.

hi Annette - I have since found some more info. I am looking for the family of Nellie, Anna, Lizzie and Tess Lannon - (sisters all came to US) Nellie emigrated to US in 1906 - her last address listed on her ship passenger is Dromod County Leitrim. She mentioned that she had 11 brothers and sisters and that her father might have been a tailor. We were always told she was from Roscommon but now have the Dromod address. Her Aunt was my Great Grandmother Bridget Lannon born in Ireland March 1855..Nellie was born Nov 5 1886 in Ireland. Does that help?

Cloonkerin was a townland in the Parish of Kilcolagh in the Poor Law Union of Boyle.(within 12 mi. of Boyle)

There are a number of Cox (36)in the telephone book for Roscommon and some in Boyle (7). While waiting for replies you could try writing to those in the Doyle area to see if any descentants still there. Addresses sufficient for delivery.

Back in 1857 the Griffith valuation shows two parcels for the name Thomas Cox, in the above parish & townland.
www.askaboutireland.ie

1901 Census www.census.nationalarchives.ie

The Cox living in townland of Cloonkerin are a family of your James 34 & wife Bridget 32.
I'm not sure that a woman would go to England or Scotland for training as nursing was quite different in the early 1900's, more learning on the job. Irish nurses probably would go to find work.

There is still one Kilduff in the Roscommon telephone book living in Grange. A letter to this person might clear things up for you or at least put you on another path.

Do you have access to the UK 1911 Census?
Roscommon has baptism, marriage records on line, depending on the survival of parish records.

You should be able to get a certified copy of the marriage
record for 1868 as stated from the General Registry Office
www.groireland.ie
( a mother's maiden name is on a birth record and on her own marriage record)

Roscommon is one of few counties with some parish records
from early times but not all parishes:

There were many Bridget or versions in latin on a CD by the Latter Day Saints, this is the closest in date:

Brigitta born 25 Sept 1842 Fa: Thomas Kenny Mo:Brigittae
Breheny Boyle, Roscommon

Marriages usually happened in the wife's parish if different from the husband's parish.

The Latin name for James was Jacobum or Jacobus (I thought this was Jacob) have the closest in date as 1837 & 1844 Ardcarn & Tuama, Union of Boyle.

Jacobum born 7 June, 1840 Loughglynn, Roscommon
Fa: Thomae Kenny Mo: Mariae Higgins

These are not all the parish's, just the ones on the CD.
Was unable to locate Loughglynn so it is probably a civil registration district of the time:

Fa: James Kenny Mo: Bridget Killelea

Bridget Kenny born 30 March 1870 # 109 Boyle No. 1
Catherine Kenny born 20 Feb 1870 #104 Boyle
Michael Kenney born 13 July 1872 Boyle No.1

A poor law union such as Boyle covered an area of about 12 mi. and included parish's, towns, villages

I checked twice but I think either Bridget or Catherine's birth year must be incorrect?

Some Parish's in Roscommon were saved from descruction. Of
these there is only one James Dillon birth's even close to 1812. The birth are from 1795 a gap to 1818.

Jacobum(Jacobus & James) born 1 Nov 1818 fa: Thomas Dillon
Mo: Mariae Hislan, Athlone & Drum

Roscommon records are online from surviving parish's on an Irish History Foundation www.rootsireland.ie You have both parents names and if there are records you should at least be able to find the births of their daughters which will tell you where in Roscommon. This is a not for profit but fee paying website like most of Ireland's genealogy.

There are 117 Dillon's in the Tithe Applotments of 1823-1837 and 31 Conway's. The next census substitute is the Griffith
Valuation. www.askaboutireland.ie

I couldn't locate them in a 1841 UK Census that identified
Irish born persons.
