John Sharkey was a tailor living in Emmet Street, Birr in the 1930-40's. You will find the family in Griffiths Valuation 1854 (John, Edward and Michael in separate households) and in the 1901 Census (William & Kate in Crinkill; John & Margaret-tailor in Cumberland (later Emmet St.)St.; and Patrick & Kate, slater, living in Pound St).
A headstone in the RC cemetary of the neighbouring parish of Eglish bears the inscription "Erected by Mary Sharkey to the memory of her beloved husband Edward Sharkey who died Dec 16, 1873 aged 56 years. Also of her beloved child Thomas who died May 31, 1859 aged 15 years. Also his wife, the above named, who died in 1893 aged 76 years. RIP".
