I am looking for information on my gggrandmother and her son my ggrandfather. They immigrated to US in 1861-63 to PA, Illinois, and then Nebraska. Patrick returned in c.1871 and married Margaret McDonnald/McDonnell, then returned to PA. Patrick was born on 3/17/1842 in Kerry Ballyferritor region. Patrick's father was also Patrick I think and died around c.1851. I don't know Mary's birth date, but assume it is the same area. She had a sister, Honora, who married James Ferritor of the same region. Would like any info anyone can give. Thank you.
My great grandmother Ellen (Nellie) Hayes ( born: 1855) came to Saint John New Brunswick Canada in 1875, from Skibbereen Ireland.
Cork/Limerick place name --- please help!

I just obrained a copy of my ancestor's death certificate (Johanna Burns nee Long, 1866-1932), which was written in cursive handwriting, and difficult to read. It gives her place of birth as Ireland, and the town name as what appears to be "Balardus." I've looked and looked, and can't find an Irish town with that name, so I wonder if I'm misreading it. I believe her to be from either Cork or Limerick, and I've seen sources attach the town Mitchelstown, Cork to her, so maybe it's a place near there. Any help woud be greatly appreciated!

I am looking for anything that ties my Jeremiah Roche and his wife Catherine to Mitchelstown Co. Cork.
They had as far as I know the following children:
Patrick, William, Thomas and May

Patrick born circa 1802 according to his death certificate as he was meant to be 96 years of age at the time of his death.

As for William, Thomas and May I dont have anything on them.
Patrick was transported to Tasmania, he was tried on 1st January 1843 for Burglary he was sentenced to 14 years and 7 months, he was my great grandfather.

It is very difficult for me to find the records for these people in Ireland because I live in Tasmania, but if anyone can do a lookup for me I would be only too willing to do the same for them in return should anyone find they have relatives who have also been sent to Tasmania, we do have an online archive here but it is suggested that this should only be used as a guide as some info is incorrect. But I do visit the archives on a regular basis and would do some lookups in return for the same. my email is croa3628@bigpond.net.au

Cork, Ireland.
Died November 23, 1950 in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Patrick DORGAN was the son of Patrick DORGAN (DARGAN). His mother's name is not known.

Mary HARTNETT was the daughter of John HARTNETT and (?) FLYNN

Patrick DORGAN emigrated to Ellis Island on October 28, 1869 from Queenstown (Cobh) onboard the Teutonic. He gave his age as 40 which would have him born in 1856! He gave his last Irish address as the townland of Ballylanders in the P.L.U. of Middleton in the civil parish of Ballintemple.

Patrick DORGAN may have had a brother named David DORGAN who married a woman named HEALY. They had five children, Elizabeth, John Christopher, David, and Jeremiah and James (twins). They all remained in Ireland and lived in Ballybraher, Ballycotton, East Co. Cork.

Mary HARTNETT and their five children (Anne Theresa, Michael Joseph, Patrick Francis, David Andrew, William John) followed Patrick DORGAN, arriving at Ellis Island June 9, 1897 also onboard the Teutonic from Queenstown (Cobh). She gave her age as 28 and last Irish address as Midleton.

They settled in Rhode Island.

Here are my questions for listers:

PATRICK DORGAN:

1. Who is doing research re: DORGAN / HARTNETT / FLYNN / HEALY families of East Cork?

2. Where and when was Patrick DORGAN born?

3. Who were the parents of Patrick DORGAN and where were they born and married?

4. Who were Patrick DORGAN's siblings?

MARY HARTNETT:

1. Who were the parents of Mary HARTNETT and where were they born and married?

2. Who were Mary HARTNETT's siblings?

Thanks for any information.

Bill Dorgan

bdorgan@bellsouth.net
There is also a possibility that any of these could have orginated from O'Mhaoir (pronounced O'Wire).
Any help would be appreciated.

Resource for Fennessy Researchers

Perhaps you can still locate a paperback or hardbound copy of this 1999 book, "Fiangus to Fennessy," ed. by Michael J. Fennessy and Aine C. Ni Fhiannusa, if the subject interests you.

Per book review in "Irish Roots" a fine genealogy periodical published in Cork, this book would be of great interest to anyone with the surname Fennessy and any of its variants. The book contains color photographs from a Fennessy gathering, as well as maps, drawings, illustrations, and many articles and essays on a wide variety of subjects to do with that surname which were presented at Clonmel, August, 1998, at the first international gathering of Fennessys. An added bonus is an appendix which lists all those who attended the 1998 gathering and correspondents up to the summer of 1999.

Essays included in this 144-page book is "Quercus robur Fennessii," by Eleanor Fennessy who tells the story of how a rare (and ugly) variety of oak tree came to be called after a member of the Fennessy family, a theme also taken up in "The Fennessy Nursery in Waterford."

"A Fennessy in Irish Politics" is the title of an essay, and another is entitled "An Irish Emigrant Tragedy," which recounts the tale of the unfortunate Mick Fennessy who was hanged in Australia for killing his wife.

Publisher, Coastal Research,
37 Sutherland Road,
Plymouth, PL4 6BN,
England

My g.g grandfather Thomas Connor (B:Oct 12.,1842) was born in an unknown location in Ireland. His parents were Thomas Connor and Mary Stewart. Nothing further is known about them or if he had any brothers or sisters. Thomas(Jr)left Ireland and eventually came to the U.S. where he lived and died (1901) in Murray, County, Minnesota. His obituary revealed that he had ben a gold miner in Australia prior to arriving in the U.S. His Naturalization papers, death certificate and the like all refer to his being born in Ireland but nothing further. Also, at this point in time, I cannot locate Thomas on any Passenger lists. I have also thought that he may have traveled to the U.S. via Canada but can't find anything in that regard as of yet. Needless to say he's my "brick wall"! Any suggestions? Mike

Rare Anglo-Norman Surnames of Ireland

MUNSTER PROVINCE: Per Paul Cotter, in "Irish Roots," many of Ireland's surviving Anglo-Norman surnames are of relatively uncommon occurance today while at the other end of the spectrum we have the numerous descendants of great lineages, with names of intermediate occurance in between. As late as the mid-19th century bearers of these surnames were mostly still found in the same counties their ancestors had inhabited.

Two examples of uncommon names may be of interest:

Boyton is a place in Suffolk, and a family called Boyton first occur in association with the Co. Tipperary town of Cashel as early as 1235. Individuals in this family were prominent Cashel merchants for centuries after and gave their name to the nearby parish of Boytonrath. Several Catholic Boytons lost their lands around Cashel in 1650s, and some families of the name can still be found in an outland area of Cashel.

The Norman de la Montaigne ("of the mountain") family held lands near Castlemartyr in Co. Cork from the 13th century onwards. The form "Mayntayn" occurs in the 1580s in the same area, although by then family members were no longer freeholders, while today a small number of Mountain families can still be found in the area.

McElligott Surname

Anglo-Norman Surname - McElligott:

This family descend from Elias fitz Norman, one of the early settlers who acquired lands in Cos. Waterford, Tipperary and Kerry, and who died around 1214. His eldest son, Richard, inherited the east Munster lands, which soon passed to the Rokelle family via his granddaughter Margery; her descendants now bear the Waterford surname Rocket. In time the name born by the descendants of the younger son, William fitz Elias, who had inherited the Kerry lands, transformed itself via Gaelic into McElligott. The family were prominent gentry in that county until the 17th century dispossesions and the surname remains common there today.

-- Based on Matheson/"Irish Roots" periodical
