Hello Michael,
I am not a descendant of the Shevlin family, nor have a connection with Ms O'Rourke, but I found a great deal of information about the Shevlins and Quigleys, some of which you already have, some you may not. I’ve included data about the records you have for easy reference.
For example you already possess the marriage record for Mary Shevlin and Michael Quigley, married in New York on 16 July 1905, which shows that Michael Quigley’s parents were Michael Quigley and Mary Seery, and that Mary’s parents were Michael Shevlin and Rose Daily.
I located the marriage index for Michael and Mary at the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website at:
https://www.familysearch.org/#form=catalog&catSearchType...I’ve included the marriage index below for quick reference:

____
As an aside from Irish research, one interesting record I found is a 1905 New York census, showing that a 26 year old waitress named Shevlin, is lodging in the household of an insurance man named Henry Bowers Jr., and his family, at an address of 4th Avenue, New York. Just after the Bowers’s residence, the census keeper visited East 29th Street, and so it’s possible Mr. Bowers had lived on 4th Avenue, near East 29th Street, if not on the corner of both streets in New York. At 26 years old in 1905, Mary’s presumptive birth year would be 1879, which is what you have for her year of birth,
This census was taken in New York on June 5, 1905, a month before Michael and Mary were married. Unfortunately the census doesn’t give the first name of the Shevlin waitress, but does note that she was born in Ireland, and that as of 1905, had been in the U.S. for 6 years, though I’m not sure how accurate that is.
The census also lists her as being an “al,” which stands for alien, or non-citizen. I believe this census could pertain to your Mary Shevlin. It was found at the LDS website. You can view a copy of the original census at:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-159385-67512-17?c...If you can access the census at the above link, you may have to registers first with the LDS.
I’m not sure why the Shevlin waitress’s first name isn’t listed in the census. It may be the owner of the hotel didn’t know her first name.
For a modern Google Map of 4th Avenue and East 29th Street at:
http://tinyurl.com/7n9to5xOnce at the map left-click on the capital letter A to general a street view of 4th Avenue and East 29th Street. When you take a tour down East 29th, you’ll see there are some nice brownstones still in existence. It’s possible the Bowers family had lived in one of these brownstones. The census indicates he had some money, as he also had butlers, coachmen, cooks, and maids in residence.
Michael, I can’t be sure the Shevlin waitress in the 1905 New York census is your great grandmother, but in the census her age and her birthplace agree that she would have been born circa 1879 in Ireland. That, coupled with the Shevlin surname not being as common as other Irish surnames, makes me think the 1905 enumeration could pertain to your Mary Shevlin. Perhaps you’ll know better than I, as I am not familiar with your genealogy.
One thing I am more certain about is the following index from the Latter Day Saints for the birth of Mary Shevlin. The index shows that Mary’s birth took place on 9 May 1879 in Ireland. Unfortunately, it doesn’t say where in Ireland she was born. But it does list her parents as “Micahel” Shevlin and Rose “Darly” Shevlin. As you’ll see below either the person who originally recorded the birth or the person who transcribed the birth for the LDS, made some errors in spelling for Mary’s father Michael, and Rose Daily’s maiden name, having spelled it as “Darly.”
The index is below:

Mary’s birth can be found in LDS microfilm number 256028. If you don’t already have her birth record, you can order it online from the following link:
https://familysearch.org/films/lookup/products/view/film/256...The index above pertains to a civil birth record. The government in Ireland commenced with the civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths for all religious denominations in 1864. Protestant marriage however, were recorded by the government under the civil registration scheme commencing in 1845.
To back up the birth record, I also found Mary’s baptism index at the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website for County Monaghan. This indicates that the Shevlin family had lived on the County Louth/County Monaghan border, as the two counties adjoin one another.
The IFHF index shows that Mary was baptized in the Inishkeen Catholic Church, County Monaghan in 1879. Her parents are listed as Michael Shevlin and Rose Daily:

You’ll have to access the above index to order a transcription of Mary’s baptism. To do so first go to the IFHF homepage at:
http://www.rootsireland.ie/Before accessing indexes at the IFHF you’ll need to register with the website. You’ll be able to access indexes I located for free (as I found 5 more Shevlin baptisms), but will have to purchase credits in bulk to acquire the baptism transcriptions. The transcriptions will be sent to your computer once payment is made by credit card.
Later you’ll see the 5 other IFHF baptism indexes I located for the children of Michael Shevlin and Rose Daily. But, I had to first learn who these other children were, as the IFHF doesn’t automatically provide children’s names in the indexes, the way the LDS does when you supply the parents’ names.
And so, I went to the LDS website to for the civil birth indexes of Michael and Rose’s other children. These children include Bernard (1868); Owen (1870); John (1872); James (1874); and Patrick (1876).
The birth indexes for Bernard, Owen, John, and James, show they were born in Barronstown, Louth. The five birth records are reproduced on five different LDS microfilms. Following each birth index is a link in which you can order that specific microfilm online.

To find out, order her civil birth record, as this will tell you where she was born. Mary’s baptism record transcription may also tell you where the family had been living when she was baptized. Additional information in the index shows that Michael’s father was Bernard Shevlin and Mary’s father James “Daly.” Then index also shows that Michael was born in 1843 and Rose in 1846: Michael would have been born just before the Great Famine, while Rose would have been born during the Great Famine.

MICHAEL QUIGLEY AND FAMILY
Next I found Michael Quigley’s baptism index at Ancestry.com’s, “Ireland, Births and Baptisms.”
The index also gives his baptism date as 6 October 1877 and his birth date 4 October 1877. He was baptized in the Catholic Parish of Killinvoy, Killmain, and Rahara, County Roscommon, Ireland. The index doesn’t say which church in this parish he was baptized in. I’ll have more about this later.
Michael’s parents are listed in the Latin as Michaele Quigley and Mariae Ceery. Though found at Ancestry.co the index provides the LDS film number for the parochial registers of the Killinvoy and Killmain Catholic Church. The film number is 989752. The film covers the registers of the parish for the years 1841 to 1881. You’ll see a lot more of this film number a little later.

Like Michael’s baptism index, the marriage record of his parents Michael and Mary can be found in LDS microfilm number 989752. This film can be ordered online at:
https://familysearch.org/films/lookup/products/view/?film=98...I also found the civil marriage index for Michael and the person I believe would be Mary at the IFHF website for County Roscommon. But, the index would not accept Mary as Michael’s wife’s first name, nor would it accept Marie or Maria, or any other variation of the name. I had to go through each letter of the alphabet to see which the search engine would accept as the wife’s first name. The search engine accepted the letter J. Finally I figured out the index wanted the name Jean. I’m not sure if this in an error on the part of the registrar who originally recorded the marriage, or a transcription error by the IFHF, or if Jean may have been Mary’s middle name.
In any even the index below shows that the marriage of Michael Quigley and Jean Seery was recorded in the Roscommon civil parish in 1865. Civil marriage marriages from this time period traditionally include the name of the father’s of the groom and bride. After several guesses, the IFHF search engine accepted Luke as Michael Quigley’s father:

I then went to the IFHF and found the civil birth and church baptism indexes for Bridget and Patrick; the baptism index for Ann; and the birth and baptism indexes for Maria/Mary.
I also found indexes for two children who are not in the LDS indexes above. These are the civil birth index for Michael Quigley (1877); and the birth and baptism indexes for Catherine Quigley (1881).
The baptisms for all the Quigley children took place in the Knockcroghery Catholic Church. This was the same church where their parents Michael and Mary were married in 1865.
If you access the 1865 Knockcroghery Catholic Church baptism index for Bridget, make sure you spell her first name as Brigid, or the search engine will not produce any results. While the IFHF search engine is more forgiving with variant spellings of surnames, it is not so forgiving when it comes to variations of first names.
Also, concerning Mary Quigley born in 1874, make sure to spell her first name as Maria in her Roscommon (CP), that is, Civil Parish birth index, rather than Mary, or the search engine will reject the search. You can spell her name as Mary in her Knockgroghery baptism index, however.

To see a photo of the Knockroghery Catholic Church, go to the following link:
http://tinyurl.com/cyr6rxo The name Knockcroghery has an infamous origin, in that in the Irish language it means “Hanging Hill.” To read more about Knockgroghery, go to the Wikipedia link at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KnockcrogheryThe Catholic parish of Knockcroghery was located in the Civil Parish of Killinvoy. With this knowledge I looked for Michael’s father Luke Quigley in an Irish property tax record known as Griffiths Valuation. Griffiths Valuation was enumerated in the 32 counties of Ireland between the years 1847 and 1864.
Grffiths Valuation did not include the names of family members of the person who was taxed on houses, land, and outbuildings. It only included the name of the person whoe leased the property. This person was called the “Occupier.” The owner of the property of the owner’s repreentative was also named in Griffiths Valuation. The owner or representative was called the “Immediate Lessor.”
I found a person named Luke Kelly in Griffiths Valuation living in the townland of Killeenrevagh, Civil Parish of Killinvoy. The valuation for Killeenrevagh was completed by 1857. Actually, Luke is listed four times in the valuation in Killeenrevagh, once as leasing a house on his own, once leasing a house and land in common with two other men, once leasing land on his own, and once leasing land with another.
The first Griffiths Valuation entry below shows Luke Quigley leasing a house on his own:
No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 1d
Civil Parish: Killinvoy
Townland: Killeenrevagh
Occupier: Luke Quigley
Immediate Lessor: Louisa Pelly
Description of Tenement: House
Area of Land: -
Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: -
Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: 10 Shillings
Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Propterty: 10 Shillings
____
Griffiths Valuation shows that Luke Quigley had leased a house from the Immediate Lessor named Louisa Perry. The house was valued at 10 Shillings. The total valuation was 10 shillings. However, Luke would not have had to pay tax. Under the tax scheme those whose leasehold was valued under 5 Pounds, did not have to pay a percentage of the tax.
The map number at the top of the valuation, Map 1d, refers to an Ordnance Survey Map from the time period showing where Michael’s leasehold was located in the townland of Killeenrevagh.
You can access Griffiths Valuation for free at the Ask About Ireland website link at:
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/If you go to the Griffiths Valuation site for the townland of Killeenrevagh, Civil Parish of Kilinvoy, Map Reference No. 10, you’ll see that Luke Quigley is leasing over 6 acres of land from Louisa Pelly. At Map Reference 11a, Luke and two other men, Patrick Murray and Brian Kelly are all leasing a house and land in common. At Map Reference 12 Luke is leasing land in common with a man named Thomas Scully. In all these properties the Immediate Lessor is Louisa Perry. Because land is part of the leaseholds, the men were likely all farmers.
Michael I believe there’s a possibility that the Luke Quigley named in the four Griffiths Valuation entries above was your great great grandfather, which means that the townland of Killeenrevagh, County Roscommon would be your Quigley ancestral home.
To view a Google Map of Killeenrevagh, go to:
http://tinyurl.com/7p6zgvqOnce at the map, zoom-out to view the area around Killeenrevagh. To the east you’ll see Lough Ree, and the border with County Longford. You’ll also notice that Killeenrevagh is situated on the N61 dual carriageway (divided highway).
I also found a Patrick Seery listed twice in Griffiths Valuation in the townland of Kilmore, Civil Parissh of Killinvoy. At Map Reference 3 he and at least four other men are leasing a house with land, and four other parcels of land from the Representatives of Bernard Kelly. One of the other men leasing the property is Thomas Seery, who may have been Patrick’s brother. The “Representatives of Bernard Kelly” indicates that Bernard may be deceased and that his property may have been overseen by the Chancery Court or perhaps a representative of the court.
At Map Reference 5 Patrick and Thomas Seery are leasing a parcel of land as well as a house with land and an “office.” An office could be any type of outbuilding such as a barn, shed, stable, blacksmith shop, etc.
Like Luck Quigley, Patrick and Thomas Seery were probably farmers.
The Patrick Seery in Griffiths Valuation may also have been your great great grandfather.
THE 1940 U.S. CENSUS
I found what I believe to be your great grandfather and great grandmother, Michael and Mary Quigley, and their children in the 1940 census, living at an address of 85 E. 140th Street, Bronx, New York. The census was taken on April 6. Michael is listed as a 62 year old chauffeur working for a wholesale butcher. He, as well as his 61 year wife old Mary were born in the Irish Free State. The census shows that Michael had worked 40 hours during the week of March 24 to March 30.
In the household with them is their 26 year old son Joseph, who had been working as a doorman at a hotel, but who had been unemployed for the past 36 months. He was born in New York. He was also single. Also in the household is Michael and Mary’s 21 year old son Andrew, born in New York. He is listed as having been a tool maker for a tool manufacturer, but he too had been unemployed for the past 36 months.
In the same household are Michael and Mary’s son-in-law, 34 year old Joseph Carroll, born in Irish Free State. He is employed as a motor man for a street electric railway, and had worked 40 hours during the week of March 24 to March 30. Joseph’s wife (Michael and Mary’s daughter), is 23 year old Madeline Carroll, born in New York. She was not employed. Joseph and Madeline Carroll’s daughter is 1 year old Mary M., born in New York.
The 1940 census was found at Ancestry.com. If you don’t have access to Ancestry.com, please let me know and I’ll send you a transcription of the 1940 census for the Quigley and Carroll familes.
Best Wishes Michael.
Thank you for your service and God Bless.
