Christopher,
Again my sincere thanks for your assistance with our mutual St. John family information. Looking at your message dated 7th inst, I note you say Catherine St. John born 28.12.36 Married William McGibney. I am wondering if there were 2 No. Catherine St. Johns circa the same period in the same parish of Templemichael. My Great Great Grandmother Catherine Christie Married John St. John born April 1830 to Parents George St. John & Margaret Armstrong. Catherine Christie & John St. John married on August 13th 1858 at St. Paul's C. of Irl. Clonguish. Civil & Church Parish of Newtownforbes. Co. Longford. Catherine was widowed in 1908 at the age of 72
and continued to live at House 5, now House 2, Cartron Big, Corboy. She died in the Jan - Mar Period of 1913 aged 77 Years. She is buried in St. Catherine's C. of Irl. Churchayard, Killoe, Longford. Her Daughter Mary Jane Gill was also widowed by the time of the 1911 Census and returned to live with her mother in Cartron Big. It was still the physically the same house but the number changed due to other houses falling into disrepair or the rooves having fallen in. My mother Lucy recalled visiting her Great Grandmother Catherine there along with her mother Emily. She said from memory she thought it was 2 stroied with thatched roof. I am told by a mutual Cousin namely: Jack Sheehan of Kilmeaden, Co. Waterford, that he visited Templemichael Parish approx: 2 years ago and runied walls of it still stand. Is there the possibility that Catherine & John St. John's Daughter Catherine born Feb 11th 1870 may have married William McGibney. Roy

My grandfather was born in the Granard workhouse in 1905 and there is no listing of parents names on his birth record. Were illegitimate children given their names by the workhouse staff or did the mother get to name them and do they carry the last name of one of their parents? I'm also very interested in seeing if a list of residents there during that time is available anywhere.

Thanks!
Hi Greg,

I've been doing a bit of digging on the Moxham history and I came across something that might be of interest to you. My g-grandfather John Moxham married Mary Anne Small in Almorita church, Co. Westmeath, on 26 February 1884. One of the witnesses was Gustavus Nicolls. As you mention, John's sister Teresa married a Dr. Nicholls, so I wondered if there might be a connection to this chap with the intriguing name. In the same church, Anne Nichols, daughter of carpenter John Nichols, married William Patton 10 August 1887.

Hopefully this is of some use to you,
Neil Moxham

Margarets father was John St John his father was George St John and Mother was Margaret Armstrong. Below is the details of george:

George St John
Wife: Margaret Armstrong. Her name was not listed in my family bible but is on the christening certificates of all the children. There is a high likelihood her mother was Catherine Armstrong.
Occupation of George St John: Shoemaker- this occupation was recorded from 1830 to 1847”
Address: The address of all the children’s birth certificates were listed as Aughnacolia/Aughnacliffy, Aughnacliffe/ Aughnacorry, Templemichael, Co. Longford.
Your guess is as good as mine as to the correct spelling
I believe a land sale in 1876 gave the address as:
Longford, Ardagh, Aghnacally Glebe.
This is therefore the address we will use

Children
My family bible listed the children of George as Kathleen, George,William and Thomas. Only a date of birth for Thomas was provided in the bible. This proved to be wrong as it was in fact his christening date. Interestingly his certificate of baptism is the only one to have a date of birth all the others have date of christening only. These details were obtained from rootsireland.ie.
John St John (Date of Baptism) 25.4.1830. Originally he is recorded in the family bible as William. however no Williams were recorded as being born in Templemichael. This research confirmed his name. According to Irish naming pattern the eldest son was named after his fathers Father. This means Georges father was John St John
Cathline St John (Date of baptism) 28.12.1838 (The family in later years spelt this Kathline, prioro to this research her dob was unknown)
George St John (Date of Baptism) 8.5.1843 (Baby bear) (This George is not to be confused with Thomas’s son born in 11.8.1893 in Longford) If he is the eldest son then this would mean that daddy bears fathers father was George.
Thomas St John born 27.7.1847. (date of baptism 8.8.1847).
There are 17 years between the births of the first and last Children

I have a picture of Thomas St John and his son

I believe George came from Tipperary (I have compiled dispersal data which I base this on). I have found a record of Nicholas St John who Died 16 Feb 1775. He is Church of Ireland and is burried in the family grave at Holy Trinity, Fethard, Tipperary. He left most of his estate to his sister Catherine. He also left items to his brother Thomas and sister Mary. Finally he left £100 to his brother John St John. I still haven't completed my research, but believe this was George from Longfords father. I attach a picture of Thomas St John (John st John, your ancestors brother)

Switching back to Shaw for a moment, the marriage of Sarah Shaw with a Moffet (she later married an Armstrong as is pointed out in this thread) is of interest. There were NO Moffets (of whatever spelling) in the Drumlish area in either the Griffiths Valuation, or earlier in the tithe applotments, and even earlier 1790 voter lists. There were Moffets in the area a bit east of Newtownforbes, and bunches of them in the Killashee area. There were also SHAW families in Ballynakill Townland and nearby in Killashee. I might suspect the Shaws of Killashee Parish could have been related. I have extensive Moffat records from all Co. Longford, but have not come across a marriage of Sarah Shaw to a Moffat, incidentally - Tom Moffatt

She also stated she had returned to Ireland in 1914 to settle an estate.

This maybe the wrong Patrick, but the only one in Ohio at 3132-W. 14th.
My grandfather, George Tucker, was born Sept. 27, 1900 in Brooklyn. His parents were John Tucker and May McDermott. They lived in Brooklyn and show on the last census in 1940 living at 183 St. John's Place, Brooklyn, NY. He and May separated after that and we do not know what happened to him afterwards until his death. He was buried on July 13, 1961 at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York. I would like to know if he remarried and where he lived in between.

My great grandfather, John Tucker, born John Togher in Edgeworthstown, Longford, Ireland on April 21, 1869 was married for the 2nd time on June 19, 1892 in Newark New Jersey, USA to Elizabeth Callahan. (I would like to know who he married the first time). They moved to Brooklyn, New York and had 4 children, Kathryn, Eugene, Christina, and George. They show on the 1900 US Census at 385 Graham Avenue. George Tucker (4th child) was born later that year. John Tucker disappears from records after this census. I cannot find him. Elizabeth remarries in 1908. I would like to know if he died or remarried or lived somewhere else.

I do hope that you do not mind me contacting you. An Amazing thing happened to me a few days ago when I found your tree! My father was William Farady and he lived with the Keegan Family just outside the centre of Dublin. I spent many happy holidays with the family and at times he new he was related to them but no one would admit it. The Keegens came to my wedding in England when I was in my early 20s.

Do you have any documents re Farady which you would be willing to share with me or at least tell me how I can get some copies. Unfortunately due the the "troubled " times many were destroyed. I do have one photo of him standing out side the school he went.

Thank you for reading this.
B M Farady, the BM Mackevoy, now BM Sullivan

The Cronogue family still live in Granard. My Great Grandmother was born Catherine Cronogue, then became Coyle when she married. There is a chance Mary could have been related to Catherine. If Mary had a Son in 1954, it Coleman she was either a younger Sister of Catherine or her niece. You can contact the Granard Parish. They have the birth and death records of the family. The Cronogues and Coyles have a long history in Granard.

That’s really interesting, Terry. The Carrickduff Drakes with whom I am in contact are supposedly descended from this family:

Edward Drake of Carrickduff, Granard, Longford, Ireland
Born: 1827; Married: Rose Lynch, b. ca. 1825
seven children:
1. Marian
2. Kate
3. Margaret
4. John
5. Bernard
6. Rose
7. Ellen

So far, the only citation I have for this is a handwritten descendants list. I would love to know how this family relates to Edward and Mary, and how both of them relate to my own, aforementioned John.

My book concentrates on the Drakes of Ashe. However the started their long reign in Devon England as descendents from Raoul Count of Valies and Vexin. There was a family that spun off to Ireland where one of the John Drakes became Mayor of Dublin. My book will be available in late April. terrywdrake.com

Just thought you might be interested in my research that traces the Drake family back to the year 700. It identifies the Drakes that moved to Ireland and those who maintained their home as the Drake's of Ashe Devonshire England. My book will be available in April 2013. website: terrywdrake.com
