I have noticed that several folks searching for relatives have referred to this town or parish as "Newton"-Limavady (as in the cookie Fig Newton for example)
Is this the correct spelling? If it is, then I have been spelling it wrong as "NewTOWN" all this time.
If the spelling is indeed "Newton" then this carries a possible greater significance in regards to my own family name of MOODY (prob. orig. spelled as MOODIE/Mudie/Mudy from Scotland) and the area of Co. Londonderry where they might have come from or possibly showing where their other family of MOODY's were from, since the name of "NEWTON" is used several times in our Ydna MOODY family trees.
This could be showing some sort of loyalty to their hometown area back in Co. Londonderry when they came to America (Pennsylvania) originally but then later moved to the Guilford Co., NC area and other places as well.
I can't seem to find the name of "Newton" elsewhere in the Moody family or the families in which they married into, doesn't mean it isn't there, just that I am not familiar with it if it is.
Therefore a Possible clue; even though its a broad stretch; may be that they were naming children (mostly used as a Middle name) for their beloved Nor. Ireland township of Newton-Limavady.
For quite some time I have been trying to make a family connection between our Ydna families who all seemed to have come over to America (mostly to PA too) from Co. L'derry, Ireland, and the John MOODY family who owned a Bleach Green who had family in Newton-Limavady. John was married twice and had sons by each wife making them half brothers. These half brothers William and Robert MOODY came to PA in c1816 with nice mens linen shirts to sell and moved in with a relative in PA (poss. Philly area). There were already MOODY's living in this area and one of them is another confirmed Ydna Moody family to us (Samuel Moody who was a linen weaver and wife Martha), whether or not this was the relative that Wm. and Robert moved in with we have no way of knowing, but its possible.
Robert Moody died while in his 20's but his half brother William Moody removed to the Pittsburgh, PA area and was quite successful as were some of his children and descendants. I would love to be able to find a family connection to these Newton/Newtown-Limavady MOODY's and our Ydna Moody's. Perhaps our earliest known ydna ancestor Thomas MOODY b.c1710 in/of Aghadowey, Co. Londonderry, Ireland was giving us clues to the links in his Moody family back in Ireland by way of the repeated use of the name of "NEWTON" in his descendants.
Anyway, If the name of this town is NEWTON, please let me know as I have seen it used both ways over and over and have wondered which one is correct.
Thank You.
