Hi Mary, Here goes!!children i believe are Michael & Jane's.
Michael 1800-1889- Patrick 1801-? -Catherine 1802-? Francis
1802-? -James 1802-1876 - John 1803-1889 - Edward 1804 -1861 -Thomas 1805-1871 Christopher 1806-18619 died at Black Mountain) (do not be confused with a Christopher who died at Gundagai nsw in 1872) David 1806-1855 - Anna 1808-1880 -Daniel 1809-1880 - Ellen 1810-1855
Bernard 1811-1868 - Mary 1812-1880 - Elizabeth 1813-1885 (There is a Patrick 1814-1897 and a David 1816-1855 )David
is unlikely to be of this tree Michael was sentenced in June 1813 Patrick baptised March 1814 so it is possible he belongs. as far as I can tell the Langley's go back to at least 1630. Michaels family are hard to trace I believe the father was Patrick B 1750 & mother possibly Margaret Timony (still working on it) Cheers Janice.
Hi Janice, My name is Mary and I am related to Michael and Jane through theire son Christopher and I was interested to read that you have found 18 children of theirs as I haven't been able to find any information on any other children other than the five sons that came out in 1828. I would be interested to get any information on the rest of the children that you may have. I am also related to the Hodges that still live in Gelantipy

Hi Janice, and thanks a mill for your reply.
It's so frustrating that I have Michael Rorke & Bridget McNally's Church marriage cert in 1851, but no parents or townland mentioned. Not sure if I'll ever find the info, but I'll certainly keep your Rourke family info in mind.
At the moment, I am awaiting the Y-DNA results from FTDNA of my brother Dermot, which should be available in next 3-4 weeks. Can't wait! Perhaps that will shed some light, so we're keeping our fingers crossed.
Thanks again.
Colette x

Hi Collette, I am not sure if this helps, however for what it is worth, the Michael O' Rourke I have was Born 1774 co. kildare, came to aus. as a convict, arrived may 6 1814 ( bi-centenary being celebrated may 6 2014 in aus.) his 1st son Michael born 1800 (died 1899 ) , & stayed in Ireland, he could have married and had a son called Michael, which could be the same link, The O was taken off the surname by the English and they had to just call themselves Rourke, the children that came here were 5 sons in 1828, his wife Jane (nee Langley) arrived as a free settler on the convict ship "Suurey 11" in 1833 I know there were 18 children in total 12 boys 6 girls so far I know the youngest girl Mary married a Hector McKenzie, and he was a commissioned stock inspector (customs officer) on the Victorian border at Willis in 1874, our tree is related to Mary who was the sister of Christopher (1806-1861)Michaels 6th son,(the sons became landed gentry ) in Victoria where our tree still lives.I do not know how many Rourkes came out yet, but I think quite a few more, I hope this helps, feel free to chat, Regards, Janice

I know it's a long-shot, but here goes:

My name is Colette O'Rorke, and my great-grandfather was MICHAEL RORKE/ROURKE, born c. 1820. I'm not sure where, but possibly Kildare as he married Bridget McNally (born Celbridge c. 1825) at Catholic Church of our Lady's Nativity, Leixlip, Co. Kildare on 10 February 1852. I have their Church Marriage cert, but unfortunately no parents or townlands given. Witnesses were Margaret McNally, Laurence Mangan & Michael Mannion.
They had daughter Ann in Leixlip in Dec 1852.
They then moved to Dublin, and were there in 1857 when next daughter that I know of, Catherine Mary, was born in June 1857. Both Michael & Bridget died in Dublin too.
Their son Christopher, born Dec 1859, is my grandfather.
They also had another daughter, Mary Helena, born June 1862.

Just wondering if anyone knows about Rourke family left behind after Michael & Jane + family emigrated to Oz?

Thanks in advance for any help or info.

Colette xx

Coates Family, Kildare

I am trying to research my family of Coates. I have gone back as far as 1812 to my great, great, great grandfather, Captain Richard Aylmer Coates. He married Frances Plunkett in 1812 and apparently was in the 49th Regiment. I have found references to a Richard Aylmer Coates in the London Gazette's military announcements but have not yet found a military record for him. Family lore says that we were connected to the Coates' of Knockanally House and that an ancestor went off with the maid who had red hair so he was disinherited! It's possible a Coates married an Aylmer as the Aylmer's owned most of the land in the area and sold the land to the Coates' who built Knockanally. I wanted to know if anyone came across Richard Aylmer Coates or Frances Plunkett or any other information that might help. Thanks

I'm trying to make any connection with this Andrew Cribbin. Any help would be really appreciated, Robert Cribbin

Hello Brendan,
I just saw you message of 2011 and was very interested to note an Andrew Cribbin. I think your great grandfather Thomas Cribbin might have been my great great grandfathers brother.
I have my great grand fathers (Thomas Cribbin)marriage cert to Bridget Dempsey in 1889, and his fathers name is listed as Andrew (living) and he was a farmer. They came from the Clane area.
The only other Andrew I can find around that time was "Cribbin of Clane and Timahoe" - Andrew Cribbin married Anne White and they had at least 3 children - all girls, but perhaps there was a son also - dont know. My great grandfather Thomas died in 1921 aged 71 so B.1850.
Any info at all on your great grandfathers brother Andrew would be appreciated, and perhaps we can find a connection.

I also have a lot of info on Laurence Cribbin who came to Dublin and lived in Clontarf, but I'm not yet sure how he's related,

thanks, Robert

Hi again
Without being sure if Ann was born in Kildare, there's no point in researching in that county until you have more definite info. As you no doubt are aware, first rule of genealogy is to start with what you know.
How do you know Ann lived in Kildare?
When & where was she married?
Who was her husband?
Did the cert not mention her father?
How do you know her mother was called Martha? And that there was a Samuel in the Wright family?

Names, DOB, marriages, baptism (even guesses), etc would help this list to help you. Also, a placename in Kildare if possible.

Meanwhile, there are dozens of WRIGHTs in Kildare on the 1901 & 1911 Irish census which might be of help.

Also on Griffiths Valuation, lots of WRIGHTs.

And finally, on familysearch.org, hundreds of WRIGHT births, baptisms & marriages.

Happy hunting!
Colette

It was common in Ireland to give the next child of the same gender the name of a deceased child. It is possible someone transcribed the birth and christening wrong. Five days would be quite normal as soon after first as possible. If the mother went to her mother's for the delivery the child
would be baptised at mother's church. Which often causes confusion. Often the marriage also took place in the bride's parish, making it look as though they moved.

There are Dillon's in the same Parish's Great Connell for instance..

The telephone book has several hundred Kelly's, but 90 in the Naas area. Woodland is mentioned, Newbridge. Same for
the name Dillon and 52 Floods.

In the Griiffith Valuation the townland of Clownings was in two Parish's Great Connell and Whitechurch which may have been emalgamated by now. However at the time 1853 two William Kelly's meet part of the description. As Christopher is not named after his father, it maybe his grandfather's first name. There are 8 Christopher's in 1853.

www.askaboutireland.ie

Did Christopher have any children in Ireland as being born 1847 he would be having his own children by about 1867+. If so you should be able to find those on the website
www.familysearch.org

Kildare also belongs to an Irish History Foundation. A pay website although not for profit. A birth record should give you the proper maiden name for mother. Plus the births of the other children

The first mother Bridget may have died and Elizabeth be a later mother and if she raised the children he may have considered her his mother!

Annette Code

If you are looking for current families you could try
writing to the Callan's in the Kildare telephone book which is on line, there are 13 but only 3 in the Nass area.
There are over 200 O'Brien's but if you go through them
carefully you probably will find a few you could send letters to but leave that search to the end as there are only 9 Bourke's. Its worth a few stamps.
The posting about Callan has been answered. It is harder to find current family members than older ones.

You can use the 1901/11 Census for the addresses to compare to the phone book or a good map.

Nass, the civil registration district would cover an area of
12 miles from the town and contain as noted parish's, and villages and smaller towns.

Good luck.

Annette Code

Hello Martin,

I’m not a descendant, but I located the Catholic Church marriage index for Nicholas Callan and “Maggie” Cross at the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website for County Kildare. The index shows that Nicholas and Maggie were married in the Allen Roman Catholic Church in 1880.

Please see below:

1 match for the search criteria: Callan (plus variants) Nicholas 1880 Parish: ALLEN (RC)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Kildare
Surname: Callan
First Name: Nicholas
Spouse's Surname: Cross
Spouse's First Name: Maggie
Father's Surname:
Father's First Name:
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name:

Year: 1880

Parish/District: Parish: ALLEN (RC)
____

The IFHF homepage can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Before accessing indexes at the IFHF you’ll first have to register. Registration is free. You’ll also be able to access the marriage index for Nicholas and Maggie that I did for free, but you will be charged to obtain a transcription of the record from the IFHF. You’ll have to purchase credits with a credit card to obtain the transcription. The IFHF website has more information about purchasing credits for baptism, as well as birth, marriage, and death or burial transcriptions at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/index.php?id=78

One big advantage of ordering records from the IFHF is that as soon as credit card information is processed, the record transcription is sent to your computer, so that you don’t have to wait very long to view it.

For more information about Allen, Kildare, go to the following links:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen,_County_Kildare

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hill_of_Allen

http://www.allenparish.ie/local-history/history-of-allen
____

To see Allen, Kildare on a Google Map, go to: http://tinyurl.com/cthwtea

Once at the map you’ll see the letter A pointing to Allen. Just above and to the right of the letter A, you’ll see the label for Allen Court. Just above Allen Court you’ll see the location for the Church of the Most Holy Trinity. This would be the Catholic Church where Nicholas Callan and Maggie (Margaret) Cross would have been married.

In the upper left corner of the map you’ll see the Zoom-in/Zoom-out gage. Just above the gage you’ll notice a little yellow peg-man. Grab the peg-man with your mouse and pointer and drag him over to, and just above the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, then let go of him. After letting go you’ll be able to navigate to the church down the R415 secondary road. The church is facing sideways to the road. To the right of the church is the parking lot. To the left of the church is the cemetery. If Nicholas Callan and Margaret Cross had family who lived in the parish for any considerable amount of time, they may have relatives buried in the church cemetery. From the church you’ll be able to navigate to the center of the little town of Allen, and you can drive by The Leap Inn Bar & Snug, which also has petrol pumps outside selling Texaco. You’ll also see that at the time of this Google drive-by in 2009, The Leap Inn was for sale. I believe your Callan and Cross ancestors in the 1800s would have been familiar with the building presently called The Leap Inn, minus the petrol pumps of course.

A little earlier you saw the church marriage index for Nicholas Callan and Maggie Cross. I also found their individual civil registration marriage indexes. The indexes are from the Latter Day Saints (LDS free website at: https://www.familysearch.org/search

The indexes show the marriage of Nicholas Callan and Margaret Cross was recorded in the Naas Registration District for the December quarter of 1880. The December quarter includes the months of October, November, and December.

The Naas Registration District would have encompassed several towns in County Kildare, including Allen. Civil registration was first conducted in Ireland in 1845 when the government began to record only Protestant marriages. Civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths for all religious denomination commenced in Ireland in 1864.

The LDS marriage indexes for Nicholas and Catherine are below:

Nicholas Callan, "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958"

Name: Nicholas Callan
Event Type: Marriage
Event Date: Oct - Dec 1880
Event Place: Naas, Ireland
Registration Quarter and Year: Oct - Dec 1880
Registration District: Naas
Age:
Birth Year (Estimated):
Mother's Maiden Name:
Volume Number: 2
Page Number: 750
GS Film number: 101253
Digital Folder Number: 004179386
Image Number: 00588

Collection: Nicholas Callan, "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958"
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYQC-1ZQ

Citing this Record
"Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYQC-1ZQ : accessed 21 Apr 2013), Nicholas Callan, 1880; citing vol. 2, p. 750, General
Registry, Custom House, Dublin, Ireland; FHL microfilm 101253.

AND

Margaret Cross, "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958"

Name: Margaret Cross
Event Type: Marriage
Event Date: Oct - Dec 1880
Event Place: Naas, Ireland
Registration Quarter and Year: Oct - Dec 1880
Registration District: Naas
Age:
Birth Year (Estimated):
Mother's Maiden Name:
Volume Number: 2
Page Number: 750
GS Film number: 101253
Digital Folder Number: 004179386
Image Number: 00591

Collection: Margaret Cross, "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958"
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYQC-P6Y

Citing this Record
"Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYQC-P6Y : accessed 21 Apr 2013), Margaret Cross, 1880; citing vol. 2, p. 750, General
Registry, Custom House, Dublin, Ireland; FHL microfilm 101253.
____

You can order a copy of the marriage cert from the General Register Office (GRO) in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon. For information about ordering records, costs involved and to download application forms, go to the GRO website at: www.groireland.ie/

Next, based mainly on the information you supplied to the Ancestry.com message board for County Kildare, as well as the 1901 and 1911 census returns, I uncovered the IFHF baptism indexes for six children of Nicholas Callan and Margaret Cross. All six baptisms were recorded in the Naas, Kildare, Catholic Church.

The names and dates of baptism for the Callan children are: Patrick (1881); Thomas (1883); Jane (1884); Ann (1891); James (1894); and Michael (1897). You hadn’t mentioned James or Michael in your post to Ancestry.com, which is understandable, as these children are not named in the 1901 or 1911 census enumerations with their parents.

And as you can see I didn’t uncover baptism indexes for Catherine (Kathleen) Callan, or William Joseph Callan..

You’ll see in the chronology of the indexes above a gap of seven years between the baptism of Jane in 1884 and the baptism of Ann in 1891. It may be that Nicholas and Margaret had more children during this seven year time period, but that the Naas Catholic Church baptism registers for the same time period were difficult to read, faded, or too damaged to be indexed and transcribed by the IFHF staff. But that’s only a guess.

The indexes are below:

1 match for the search criteria: Callan Patrick 1881 Parish: NAAS (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Kildare
Surname: Callan
First Name: Patrick
Father's Surname: Callan
Father's First Name: Nicholas
Mother's Surname: Cross
Mother's First Name: Margaret

Year: 1881

Parish/District: NAAS (RC)
____

1 match for the search criteria: Callan Thomas 1883 Parish: NAAS (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Kildare
Surname: Callan
First Name: Thomas
Father's Surname: Callan
Father's First Name: Nicholas
Mother's Surname: Cross
Mother's First Name: Margaret

Year: 1883

Parish/District: NAAS (RC)
____

1 match for the search criteria: Callan Jane 1884 Parish: NAAS (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Kildare
Surname: Callan
First Name: Jane
Father's Surname: Callan
Father's First Name: Nicholas
Mother's Surname: Cross
Mother's First Name: Margaret

Year: 1884

Parish/District: NAAS (RC)
____

1 match for the search criteria: Callan Ann 1891 Parish: NAAS (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Kildare
Surname: Callan
First Name: Ann
Father's Surname: Callan
Father's First Name: Nicholas
Mother's Surname: Cross
Mother's First Name: Margaret

Year: 1891

Parish/District: NAAS (RC)
____

1 match for the search criteria: Callan James 1894 Parish: NAAS (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Kildare
Surname: Callan
First Name: James
Father's Surname: Callan
Father's First Name: Nicholas
Mother's Surname: Cross
Mother's First Name: Margaret

Year: 1894

Parish/District: NAAS (RC)
____

1 match for the search criteria: Callan Michael 1897 Parish: NAAS (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Kildare
Surname: Callan
First Name: Michael
Father's Surname: Callan
Father's First Name: Nicholas
Mother's Surname: Cross
Mother's First Name: Margaret

Year: 1897

Parish/District: NAAS (RC)
____

You can order the Naas Catholic Church baptism indexes for the Callan children individually, or you can order them from one index. To order from one index do not include the first names of any of the children. In place of the first names in the search engine, use the % sign as a wild card. Also, do not include any year or years of baptism. The index will look like this:

6 matches for the search criteria: Callan (plus variants) % Parish: NAAS (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Kildare
Surname: Callan
First Name: %
Father's Surname: Callan
Father's First Name: Nicholas
Mother's Surname: Cross
Mother's First Name: Margaret

Year:

Parish/District: NAAS (RC)
____

At this point in the research I went back to the LDS website to see if I could uncover any more information about the Callan children. While at the LDS website I came across the civil birth index for William Joseph Callan. The index shows his birth recorded in the Naas Registration District for the September quarter of 1897. But this birth index presents a puzzle, as the IFHF index for Michael seen earlier, shows that he was baptized in 1897. Catholic children were baptized as soon as possible after they were born, because if they died before being christened, it was thought they would not enter heaven.

In addition, I also looked for Michael’s Civil Registration birth index at the LDS website as well as at the Ancestry.com website, but didn’t find it. It doesn’t appear that William Joseph and Michael were twins, but I suppose that’s possible. It’s also possible that Michael’s birth wasn’t recorded by the Naas, Kildare registrar. It was up to one of the parents to report the birth or births of their children to the local registrar. It may that Nicholas or Margaret didn’t report the birth of Michael. But what I think may have possibly happened in this instance is that the priest who baptized William Joseph Callan, may have written his name as Michael, rather than William or William Joseph. Or maybe the child’s full name was William Michael Joseph Callan, or Michael William Joseph Callan.

The civil registration birth index for William Joseph Callan is below:

William Joseph Callan, "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958"

Name: William Joseph Callan
Event Type: Birth
Event Date: Jul - Sep 1897
Event Place: Naas, Ireland
Registration Quarter and Year: Jul - Sep 1897
Registration District: Naas
Age:
Birth Year (Estimated):
Mother's Maiden Name:
Volume Number: 2
Page Number: 769
GS Film number: 101066
Digital Folder Number: 004193980
Image Number: 00504

Collection: William Joseph Callan, "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958"
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FBN2-MW5

Citing this Record

"Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FBN2-MW5 : accessed 21 Apr 2013), William Joseph Callan, 1897; citing vol. 2, p. 769, General Registry, Custom House, Dublin, Ireland; FHL microfilm 101066.
____

You can order William Joseph’s birth record from the GRO in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon. If you order the birth record for William, and the IFHF baptism transcription for Michael, compare the two records to see if you may be able to solve the mystery of why in the baptism record the child is named Michael, and in the civil birth record, his name is William Joseph.

Next go back to the Google Map for the town of Allen Kildare at: http://tinyurl.com/cthwtea

Over in the left hand corner of the page in which the map is on, you’ll see a prompt highlighted in blue labeled “Directions.” Click on Directions and in the A box type in Naas, Ireland, then click on “Get Directions.” The next map that appears shows that the distance from Allen (at letter B) to Naas (at letter A), by the shortest route on the R445, is 14.8 kilometers, or 9.2 miles. With your mouse and pointer drag the map to the left until Naas is positioned in the center of your screen. Go to the Zoom-in/Zoom-out counter and enlarge the map until the streets, roads, and landmarks of Naas are more clearly delineated. To the left of the letter A pointing toward Naas, and to the left of the R407 road, you’ll see the label for the Church or Our Lady and St. David. This is the Naas Catholic Church Parish where the Callan children were likely baptized. The main portion of the church dates back to 1827.

Next grab the peg-man with your mouse and pointer and drag him to where the icon of the church is situated on the map and then let go of him. You may have to navigate along the Sallins Road to arrive at the church once you let go of the peg-man. You may have to do a little navigation with the peg-man to arrive in front of the church.

To read more about the Church or Our Lady and St. David, go to the church website at:
http://www.naasparish.ie/2009/10/church-of-our-lady-st-david...

NICHOLAS CALLAN AND MARGARET CROSS

Next I wanted to see if I could find the individual baptism indexes for Nicholas Callan and Margaret Cross at the IFHF website for County Kildare. Indexes do not automatically provide you with the names of a child’s parents. You either have to know what their first names were, or find their names through additional research. The other two options are to guess what their first names were or to go ahead and order the transcription of the baptism to find out what the parents’ first names were.

The same holds true with maiden names in marriages for brides and in baptism indexes for mothers from the IFHF, as the IFHF does not provide the maiden name of the bride in a marriage index or her maiden name in the baptism indexes of her children.

In looking for the baptism indexes for Nicholas and Margaret, I had to guess what the first names of their parents were.
The IFHF search engine would either accept or reject the choice of names I made. For Nicholas Callan, the first guess was an easy one, as he and Margaret had named their first-born son Patrick. This is in keeping with Irish naming patterns where the first-born son is named after his father’s father, while the first-born daughter is named after her mother’s mother. Irish families did not always keep to these naming patterns however, and so the choice of names could be varied.

I found the baptism index for a Nicholas Callan which may pertain to your ancestor Nicholas. The index shows that he was baptized in the Allen Roman Catholic Church in 1854. The search engine however, did not accept Patrick as his father’s first name, nor did it accept any other common Irish male names. But from past experience from using the IFHF website, I knew that the first names of people could be abbreviated in the indexes, which is a reflection of how their first names were recorded in the original baptism or marriage record. In the case of Nicholas’s baptism, I submitted for the approval of the search engine an abbreviation for Patrick. The abbreviation is Patt, without the period at the end of the last t. The search engine accepted Patt as the first name of Nicholas’s father. For the name of his mother, the search engine accepted Jane, which appears to go against Irish naming pattern tradition, as Jane appears to be the name of the first-born daughter of Nicholas and Margaret. Jane’s baptism, if you recall, took place in 1884.

The index below shows that Nicholas Callan’s parents were Patt (Patrick) and Jane Callan. I didn’t try to guess the maiden name of Nicholas’s mother Jane. You will have to order the baptism transcription to find out what her maiden name was:

1 match for the search criteria: Callan Nicholas 1854 Parish: ALLEN (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Kildare
Surname: Callan
First Name: Nicholas
Father's Surname: Callan
Father's First Name: Patt
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name: Jane

Year: 1854

Parish/District: ALLEN (RC)
____

I also found the baptism index for a Margaret Cross recorded in the Allen Catholic Church in the year 1855. The search engine accepted Thomas for the first name of her father, and Ann as the first name of her mother. Nicholas and Margaret named one of their daughters Ann. This was the daughter baptized in the Callan Catholic Church in 1891.

The baptism index for Margaret Cross follows:

1 match for the search criteria: Cross (plus variants) Margaret 1855 Parish: ALLEN (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Kildare
Surname: Cross
First Name: Margaret
Father's Surname: Cross
Father's First Name: Thomas
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name: Anne

Year: 1855

Parish/District: ALLEN (RC)
___

You would have to order the baptism transcription for Margaret’s baptism to find out the maiden name of her mother Anne.

Next I wanted to see if I could find the IFHF marriage index for Nicholas Callan’s parents, Patrick/Patt Callan and Jane. According to information found at the IFHF, the baptisms and marriages for the Allen Catholic Church in the 19th century are recorded from the year 1820 to 1899. I looked for the marriage index for Patrick and Jane but didn’t find it. Nor did I find it in any other Catholic Parish in County Kildare.

But I did locate what may be the marriage index for Catherine Cross’s parents. The index shows that Thomas Cross and Anne were married in the Allen Catholic Church in 1843:

1 match for the search criteria: Cross Thomas 1843 Parish: ALLEN (RC)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Kildare
Surname: Cross
First Name: Thomas
Spouse's Surname:
Spouse's First Name: Anne
Father's Surname:
Father's First Name:
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name:

Year: 1843

Parish/District: Parish: ALLEN (RC)
____

Moving ahead in time, I now wanted to see if I could locate the death indexes for Nicholas Callan and Margaret Cross Callan. This search took place at the Latter Day Saints website, which in turn has transcribed over 51 thousand deaths in Ireland from copies held by the GRO in Roscommon Town. I uncovered the LDS death index for a Nicholas Callan, showing that his death was recorded in the Naas Registration District for the December quarter of 1932. His age at death is listed as 75, placing his year of birth circa 1855. The IFHF baptism index above for the Allen, Kildare Catholic Church shows that a Nicholas Callan was baptized in 1854. In many instances years of birth and or baptism for an individual do not always agree exactly with their age at the time of death, and in this case the year of baptism for Nicholas is off by one year with his age at death in 1934. Also the 1911 census shows that Nicholas was 56 years old placing his year of birth circa 1855, again, one year off from the date of baptism for Nicholas Callan in the Allen Catholic Church for 1854.

Based on this information, it is probable that the death index below refers to your Nicholas Callan:

Nicholas Callan, "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958"

Name: Nicholas Callan
Event Type: Death
Event Date: Oct - Dec 1932
Event Place: Naas, Ireland
Registration Quarter and Year: Oct - Dec 1932
Registration District: Naas
Age: 77
Birth Year (Estimated): 1855
Mother's Maiden Name:
Volume Number: 2
Page Number: 461
GS Film number: 101739
Digital Folder Number: 004202046
Image Number: 00132

Collection: Nicholas Callan, "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958"
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTV5-8MQ

Citing this Record
"Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTV5-8MQ : accessed 22 Apr 2013), Nicholas Callan, 1932; citing vol. 2, p. 461, General Registry, Custom House, Dublin, Ireland; FHL microfilm 101739.
____

Nicholas’s death record can be ordered from the GRO in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon.

I then found an LDS death index for a Margaret Callan, recorded in the Naas Registration District for the December quarter of 1943. Her age at death in the index is listed as 86, with a birth year of 1857. The Allen baptism index above shows that Margaret was christened in 1855, which is close to the year of her birth recorded in LDS death index. In the 1911 census Margaret’s age is 56, placing her year of birth in the same year as Nicholas, 1855. I believe however, that counting for possible errors for her age in the 1911 census and the 1943 death index, the LDS record below pertains to your ancestor, Margaret Callan:

Margaret Callan, "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958"

Name: Margaret Callan
Event Type: Death
Event Date: Oct - Dec 1943
Event Place: Naas, Ireland
Registration Quarter and Year: Oct - Dec 1943
Registration District: Naas
Age: 86
Birth Year (Estimated): 1857
Mother's Maiden Name:
Volume Number: 2
Page Number: 519
GS Film number: 101742
Digital Folder Number: 004202049
Image Number: 00339

Collection: Margaret Callan, "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958"
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTL6-N2K

Citing this Record
"Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTL6-N2K : accessed 22 Apr 2013), Margaret Callan, 1943; citing vol. 2, p. 519, General Registry, Custom House, Dublin, Ireland; FHL microfilm 101742.
____

You can order Margaret Callan’s death record from the GRO in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon.

Best of Luck with your research Martin,

Dave Boylan
Is the spelling Dare-Delaney or. I've been through a number of sources and don't find any hyphenated names.

British Army records (prior to 1922)were held at the
National Archives, Kew, London. There is now a link to a pay website for these records.

MILGENIRE, is the Military Genealogy Ireland message board, just google. These folks can be quite helpful.
The Royal Scots have been in existance since 1625 (lst. Regiment of Foot) and were
stationed in Holywood, Northern Ireland in 2010.
1896 in Ireland Curragh or Fermoy

Curragh could be Antrim, Clare or Cork but Fermoy is Cork.
So you should think of Cork in terms of Military.

Found no Shaund as a surname in any resource. There are
Dare's and Delaney's but not together.

Cork Civil Registration:
The closest I came was a Patrick Delaney born Oct-Dec 1892 Cork #101064/004193978
William Francis Delaney Oct-Dec 1893 #101064/004193978
Julia Frances Delaney July-Sept, 1893 #101064/004193978

These all have the same Latter Day Saints film #'s. You can
see them or order them at your closest LDS Heritage Center
and some Libraries.

There are 6 Margaret McLauchlin (various spellings)
born in Cork in the 1860's. Having a son born 1891 she could of been born from 1864-1871.

Annette Code

I actually found that Michael and Esther (Paige) Holden had 5 kids:

Unknown male
John Holden
Eleanor Holden
James Holden (he is my great grandfather)
Ellen Holden

I obtained this information from an obit for James. It stated that he had a brother (unknown) and sister (Eleanor)"who stayed in Ireland". I can tell you that Michael and Ester are both buried in Athy, Kildare. This is also where John and Mary (Lawlor) married. They married in Feb 1869 and arrived in the US in April and had a baby in June of 1869. My father did not know his father very well and died when my Dad was about 15 so I'm really having to do my work on this side of the family.

I just enlisted the help of a genealogist in Ireland to research the Holden side. She said it would take about 6-8 weeks to complete and its only been about 2 weeks. Sure hope I found a good genealogist and not being taken so we shall see. I will let you know what I find.

Here is my lineage for the Holden's
Michael/Esther
son James
son John
son John - this is my father
I have been able to locate Baptism Records for James and Eleanor (children of Michael and Esther)

James-dob 1-26-1859 baptism 1-30-1859 address is listed as Newton Allen Parish is Castledermot County Kildare
Sponsors were John Murphy and Elizabeth Curren.

Eleanor dob 6-8-1852 baptism 6-13-1852 address is listed as Matthews Lane Parish Athy County Kildare Sponsors were Patrick Ward and Margaret Ennis.

Do you know any of the following people:
Ruth Holden
Cornell Holden
George Whitfield married to Phoebe Holden

I keep finding these people and they are residents of the Auburn NY area and/or buried/lived in the same place(s) of Holden's I can confirm. Not sure if you are familiar with Auburn or not but its a very small town and find it hard to believe they are not related in some way-I just can't piece it together. If they are related then I have pics of them. Go figure-I can find pictures of "maybe" Holden's but none of the Holden's I do know. My Dad does have one picture of his Dad which I will get a copy of but other than that-nothing. I will keep it touch and please do the same. Wish me luck with the "hired help" in Ireland- hoping for the best!
Chrissy

Annie (or Anne) O'Brien (1901-1968) is my great grandmother and was the daughter of John O'Brien (born abt 1878 in Portarlington, Laois) and Sarah Bourke (born abt 1876 in Leighlinbridge, Carlow).

John had a brother called Jim and also a sister called Mary.

Annie had a sister and brother-Patrick (born abt 1904) and Norah (born 1906 in Sallins, County Kildare)

Annie was born in Sallins, County Kildare but was living with her parents and siblings in Naas at the time of the 1911 Ireland census.

Annie married Patrick Callan (1881-1950), to who she had Nora (1926-2006), Vera, Sally, Sean and Marion (1934-2011).

Annie and her husband Patrick lived and grew up in Naas, County Kildare.
Callan Family Descendants

Hi,

I am working on my mum's family tree and am trying to find some relatives of my Callan family. Patrick Callan (1881-1950) is my great grandfather and was the son of Nicholas Callan (1855-1932) and Margaret Cross (1857-1943).

Nicholas and Margaret had a total of about 9 children, 2 of whom weren't alive at the time of the 1911 Ireland census. Patrick's siblings were Joseph, Thomas, Jenny (Jane), Kathleen (Kitty), Annie and William Joseph.

Patrick married twice. Firstly to a Mary Murrary to who he had Tommy and Madge (1914-2002). Madge married Dan Cleary (1919-1995) and they moved to Arizona.

He then married Annie O'Brien (1901-1968), to who he had Nora (1926-2006), Vera, Sally, Sean and Marion (1934-2011). Sean married Teresa Kelly (1931-2006) and they moved to California.

The families lived and grew up in Naas, County Kildare. Patrick and Annie and their children grew up on Sunny Hill Farm.

I would love to hear from any descendants of these families. I have a couple old photos of my Callan family at Sunny Hill Farm and Kilcullen. I would like to find out more about Tommy from Pstrick's marriage and about Patrick's first wife Mary, as well as more about Patrick's parents and siblings and their families.

I hope to hear from anyone who can help, especially any distant cousins etc.

Thanks,

Martin

Jane Gilmore Gilmore Bayne & 2 John Gilmores of Kilberry Kildare and Killurin Parish in Wexford

I am looking for information on JOHN GILMORE who was married to JANE GILMORE (daughter of ANDREW and MARY WALL GILMORE ). Jane was married twice. She gave birth to twin girls with her first husband JOHN GILMORE in May 1855, and married her second husband (BAYNE)in 1858. So John had to be alive in the fall of 1854 and died before 1858. . . . . .

And also information on John Gilmore Jane's brother b about 1818. . . . . .

There is a memorial stone in the cemetery of the KILBERRY church in Kildare which says . . . . .

In loving memory of
JOHN GILMORE who died Nov 17th 1896 aged 78 years (making birth year 1819) . . . . .

also his wife MARY who died Dec 245h 1877 aged 54 years
. . . . .
and their daughter ISABELLA SEXTON who died June 21st 1895 aged 42 years
. . . . .
also their sons GEORGE GILMORE J.P. who died April 27th 1920 aged 64 years
. . . . .
WILLIAM who died Feb 16th 1924 aged 76 years
and his wife Martha Gilmore who died April 5th 1933 aged 87 years.
. . . . .
So one must conclude the stone was not carved until 1933 nearly 40 years after this John (my uncle) died.
. . . . .
A member of the family visited Ireland just after WWII. However when I hired a professional to look up the family and check records in the 1970's I was told that the family was gone. Most had died, and the one remaining daughter had moved to Australia but letters to her last known address were not answered. I do not have her married name or even that address anymore.
. . . . .
Andrew Gilmore was a weaver and Mary Wall Gilmore was a spinster.
. . . . .
We have found no other information on the family that is solid although my researcher mentioned there was another line of Gilmores in the area. I only learned that Jane's first husband was John Gilmore when we located marriage records for the children in Canada, which all state John Gilmore was their father.
. . . . .
And we have oral history to suggest that John Gilmore (husband of Jane) was born in Scotland, specifically PERTHSHIRE, and that his Gilmore line was probably connected to Clan Morrison. The Clan Morrison came down in a different branch of the family. I found a book many years ago about the Clan Morrison Gilmores in Ireland but at that time I did not know about this rumor and did not investigate the book. Sigh. The same family member who visited Kilberry also visited Perthshire and took pictures of a farm there, but I have no information on how he knew to photograph that particular farm, and no information about it either.
. . . . .
The records of these people are mostly in the KILLURIN PARISH church in WEXFORD County although it is known that at some point the family lived in KILBERRY and descendants were there in the 1950's. Jane was confirmed at St. Ignatius in 1840 according to a letter from the Minister of Killurin dated 1859.
. . . . .
JOHN (died 1896) IS THE BROTHER of my ancestor Jane Gilmore who married a different John Gilmore (b Scotland).
. . . . .
Ancestry recently showed a leaf for a Civil Registration Deaths Index 1864-1958 for JOHN GILMORE 1818-1896
It shows the death of John in December 1896 which would be 2 to 6 weeks after the death date on the memorial stone, but I am thinking perhaps December is when the death was recorded.
. . . . .
However I don't know what to do with this clue. How do I find out what information was in the record and where it is now?
. . . . .
I am hoping that perhaps there is some information on parentage since John is the brother of my ancestor Jane. Even just a place of death would be helpful.
. . . . .
Also there is a STRONG TWIN GENE coming down from Jane. She had twins the first husband (my ancestor) and nearly every generation of descendants of the second husband have had twins. Our side has had twins as recently as the 1970s. We lean toward identicals.
William Kelly Family, Clownings, Newbridge parish, County Kildare

Looking for information on Kelly family from Clownings, Newbridge Parish, County Kildare. William Kelly and Brigid Flood had the following children, Christopher Kelly, born Sept 1847, William Kelly, born June 1843 and Christopher and Bridget born Dec 1840. I am guessing that the first Christopher died and they named another male child Christopher....the second Christopher maybe my great, great grandfather. I have information that Christopher was born on September 18th, 1847, 5 days later than the date of September 12th 1847 that is recorded for baptism. Death certificate for Christopher has father listed as William, but mother as Elizabeth Dillon (Dennel). Any information would be most appreciated.
Sean
I am looking for information about John Dare-Delaney born about 1850, possibly in Kildare.
I got his name from the marriage record of his son, Patrick Francis Dare-Delaney born about 1891. It says that his occupation was officer in The Royal Scots. No luck yet searching military records.
Other info on the record shows Patrick's mother, so assume John's wife, was Margaret McLauchlin Dare-Delaney, nee Shaund.
I have hit a dead end with this - can't find any other Dare-Dealaney's that would fit agewise. Also I cannot find any other information on Margaret McLauchlin Shaund.
If anyone has information on any of the people above, I would really appreciate it.

One more thing occurs to me and that is the Kelly family home Loughbrowne was sold and now belongs to the Jockey Club. I visited there about 50 years ago. Some cottages remained in the family and the last one(s) sold by my father about 60 years ago. That may or may not be of interest! Please let me know about your book, I would be most interested to read it. I think I may have a print of Waterloo Kelly somewhere. My family are direct descendants of Waldron - I do not know of a William? Contacts are always useful.
