I saw your post of many years ago. My grandfather was Michael Stack and his wife was Nona Bridget (Ansbro)Stack. They had several children, one of whom was my now deceased father Desmond Stack and my mother was Myrtle Elizabeth Stack. I am Maxine (Stack) Pohan and my sister is Marjorie(Stack) McMahon. We were raised much of our life in Miller In, as well as CA where she and I both reside. Regarding Grandpa Mike and politics that draws a blank for me, but his sons including my dad were involved in politics. I am not understanding your connection with the family. I am not recognizing the name Sheri. You addressed your note to a Colleen. I am only guessing. Was that my cousin Cookie's name? Hope to hear from you! My real name is Maxine, but I was called Mickey. Last name was Stack prior to my marrying.

Ellen Brien (Also spelled Bryan) my great grandmother, married Michael Sullivan in 1868.

There were other Brien (also spelt as Bryan or Breen) families there too.

In the 1911 Census, Martin McQuin, age 51, his wife Maira (34), daughters Ellen (12), Mary (11), Norah (8), and Bridget(1), and son Michael (9) lived in Banna Mountain.

Also living there were Daniel McQuin (77), his daughter Hannah (28), and sons Michael (34) and William (29).

Mary McQuin (25) was a domestic servant in the home of Margaret Pierce in Ardconnell, Tubrid, County Kerry.

William McQuin (21) was a farm servant for Edmond Flynn in Dromkeen West, Causeway, Kerry.

Banna Mountain is just south of Ballymacquin Upper. I'm interested in learning more about the area. I suspect my ancestor James McCuin (1812-1894), his wife Isabella (1814-1899), and their daughter Jane (1833-1917), who emigrated to St. Lawrence County, NY around 1834, may have come from there, but I'm stuck.

The newly released Down Survey maps show a tract of land in Rathvo Parish labeled "Knock Mc Keeuen" in what is now called Knockercreeveen, about 15 km road distance from Ballymacquin.

It is also close to Ballymacaquim, listed in the Down Survey as "Ballymacquoin."

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Linda,
Thank you for your post. It sounds like it may be a fit with Angie. I still have not found my family's origin in Kerry (the most likely possibility is Listowel, but I can not prove it yet). I do know that two of their wives were from Tubrid More, Ardfert parish. I have many Dore records of the Ballybunion area, so please feel free to contact me if you find anything.
Good hunting,
Ed Dore

I believe that Garrett McEllistrim went to Wales also. In the 1911 Welsh census at 34 Bailey St Wattstown Glamorgan there is a Gerrard McEllistrum age 32 born Tralee Kerry occupation signalman married 2 years wife Margaret Ann and daughter Martha Jane aged 1 yr.
Also I think this is the same person showing in the WW1 Medal Rolls as having been in the Welsh Regiment Royal Engineers- as a private - Regimental nos. 16855 WR 280659 and 247811.
annclare

Annclare seems to have done quite a bit of work here, hopefully I can add a little:

Stephen McEllistrim was from Tralee, born 05 July 1840 to John McEllistrim & Julia Huggard.
Stephen McEllistrim from Tralee, Co. Kerry married Johanna Sullivan from Kilfalney, Killeentierna in Killeentierna parish church on 27 February 1876. They had 5 children born to them at Nelson Street, Tralee, Co. Kerry. Nelson Street was named after Admiral Nelson of the British Navy. After Ireland won independence in 1921, it was renamed Ashe Street after the Irish patriot Thomas Ashe. The four children were born as follows:
Julia McEllistrim born 14 January 1877
Garrett M. McEllistrim born 26 July 1878
Catherine McEllistrim born 26 July 1879
John McEllistrim born 03 November 1881
Stephen McEllistrim born 04 September 1883

We know that Julia married Isaiah Brooks in 1895 and they can be found on the 1901 Irish census in The Square, Tralee.
Garrett can be found at No. 25 Nelson Street where he is listed as a nephew of Michael & Julia Ryan(nee McEllistrim). His occupation is listed as railway clerk. The only other mention of Garrett is that he was eligible for a pension in the UK.
John received his naturalisation papers in Illinois, USA on 26 September 1906. He lists his date of immigration as 13 May 1899.
Stephen Jr. emigrated to the USA on 30 March 1901. He gave his age as 20 and said he was going to his mother at Douglas Boulevard, Chicago. She can be found on the 1900 US Census as "Joan McEllistrie", a single housekeeper at a pastors house on Douglas Boulevard. She lists her emigration as 1890. She can be found on the 1910 Census as Johanna Mcelistrum, again a housekeeper, this time listed as widowed. She died in Chicago on 02 September 1933.
Stephen Jr. married Gertrude Emily Jackson ON 21 April 1912 in Chicago, Illinois. They had at least 8 children: Catherine Marie, Steven, Mabel, Gertrude, Irene, Maryanne, Clare & Don. He became a naturalized American citizen on 19 February 1915 in Chicago Illinois. He gave his address as 5716 Union Avenue, Chicago. He worked as an engineer with the railway. Stephen Jr. died on 17 August 1967 in Los Angeles, California.

Eoin

Could anyone help me with some information?
I'm looking for information about Gerald McEllistrim. It seems he was born at Cardiff, Wales, England on Dec 21st 1908, but some papers point he was Irish.
His parents names were John McEllistrim + Julia (but she's not sure). Gerald was a merchant navy seaman and he travelled around the world. On April 1936 he asked for American Naturalization and on the papers of petition says that his name was "Gerald Montrio (formerly Gerald McEllistrim or Gerald McEllistrim Brooks). It's a mistery the reason for which he changed his paternal name McEllistrim to Montrio.
He married in USA with an Argentinian woman and had 2 children a boy (called Gerald like him) and a girl. His children brought the adopted name Montrio.
His son Gerald dissappeared with a friend (they both had 15 and 13 years old) and never had been found. Now this story is a cold case recently reopened and published in the NAMUs data base.
His daughter says her father never told them about his origins, his family. She knows very little about his father.
Why he changed his family name?

Cahersiveen was the Poor Law Union or Civil Registration District for the Parish of Caher and the Townland Canburrin. A PLU would be no more than 12 mi. from the the townland.

What used to be would not necessarily exist today. I don't see a name for the inlet where Cahersiveen is located on a major road(perhaps a coast road)N70 from Kells to Waterville, there is a Biginish Island at the entrance to the inlet

www.visitcahersiveen.ie has maps and describes the town as
a small rural market town that has had several alternate spellings

Coolcaslagh has a recycling depot and an industrial park

Annette Code

Hi - I just read your reply to my message regarding the Carmody's of Listowel. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you.
Mary Carmody (known as Babe to friends and family) was born May 16th 1885 in Listowel, one of sixteen children! She came to New York October 13, 1902. She married Francis Xavier Mulvey in New York November 5th 1905. Their children were Patrick (who died age 12) twins Frank and John, Joe, Mary (who also died age 2) Anne and Agnes. Two of Mary's sisters Lavinia and Margie, and later a brother Jack Carmody came to America.
Agnes was my mother-in-law who died just last year aged 93. She was married to Walter Precious, who died just two months later. Hope this helps, and don't hesitate to contact me - Agnes wrote her life story and it includes some other information about the Carmody's....
All the best,
Marbob619@yahoo.com

Responding to this thread, referencing the original 5/17/01 posting - many connections between this thread and my research:
- Catherine Keane married Daniel Flaherty, brother of my gr-gr-grandfather Thomas Flaherty - Daniel was born in 1811 Ireland to Thomas Flaherty and Ellen O'Donnell - Daniel and several siblings emigrated to Ontario, Canada in the mid-1800's
- Mary Keane (we had her name as Kane) married Thomas Quirk, brother of my gr-gr-grandfather Michael Quirk - Thomas was born in 1819 Ireland - the Quirk parents and siblings emigrated to Ontario, Canada, in the early 1840's
- John Quirk, son of Timothy Quirk and Bridget Mahoney (and nephew of Michael Quirk), married Margaret Killoran in Ontario in 1870
- Michael Quirk's daughter, Ann, married John Clifford in 1862 Ontario - John was son of Dennis Clifford and Catherine Sullivan, and brother of Daniel Clifford who married Bridget Keane

Michael Quirk's first 3 children were born in Ireland and baptized in Annascaul - my Flahertys were from Castlegregory - I would very much like to share family history with contributors to this thread - your information has already enabled me to fill in some gaps in our records...
Best regards

We are researching a Quirk family, the first three children of which were baptized in Annascaul - the father was Michael Quirk b. 1811 - his wife was Elizabeth Herlighy b. 1813 - Mary, Bridget and Margaret were the first of their 12 children, b. 1837, 1838, and 1841, respectively - the family then emigrated to Ontario Canada, with Michael's parents, and five of his siblings - is it possible that the Quirk families of this thread are connected to our Quirk families? Surnames connected to baptisms are Ash, Quirk (Anastasia), and Herlighy - we would greatly appreciate having access to the aforementioned Quirk research

I have a townland named Cahernead from family recollections.

I have been told the children were born, I believe, in the 1850's-60's.
Ellen, Kate, Daniel, Will, Bridget, Tom, Mary, John T., Elizabeth. I have not been able to locate any of their records using Family Search. Any ideas would be appreciated!
Thank you-

If you would like me to send a photo of those, let me know a good email and I can do so :)

Also, the Blasket Centre has some recordings from long ago they acquired from Kerry Radio. The recordings are of Aunt Brid, Kate and Eileen's sister who stayed in the Ballincolla area. The recordings are Brid sharing local folklore-of course in Irish though so we could not understand them directly. Was neat to hear our family member speak though. Neighbors in Ballincolla said my mom certainly looked like the older female relatives. Lots of family still tthere on the peninsula for sure.

Paud would know my mother in law well because she was born and reared in Ventry but she also comes from the Murphy clan.
