James and Bridgett Teehan (Tehan) (maiden name Burke)
Looking for descendants
These were my great great grandparents, originally from Co Kerry mid 1880s. From searches to date we know sons James, John and daughter Mary all went to Mass.and married at Amhurst, Hampshire and another son Jeremiah sailed from Ireland to New Zealand on the Edwin Fox. (perhaps with another brother). There were other children including Honora born 20 Oct 1869 in Kerry.
James aged 24 married Julia Heffernan aged 22 on 27 July 1884 - John aged 24 married Mary Shea aged 25 on 18 Sept 1881 and Mary aged 22 married Micheal Garvey aged 24 on 1 June 1884.
We are descendants of Jeremiah who married Margaret Brown and settled in Taranaki N.Z. The surname has been spelt several ways over the years but we have gone by the Teehan version. American records as above seem to be Tehan. Would love to get to know other branches of this interesting family..

I am researching my family tree and am currently working on my GGgrandfather Richard Goslin. Presumably born in Ireland. Richard Goslin went to Canada as a young man, where he worked as a carpenter by trade. (some of the homes that he built are still standing) His wife, the former Eliza Peters, came to Canada separately and when the were married, they lived in Holliford, Ontario, three miles from the United Church. They had a son, Richard William Goslin who was born 29 Sep 1858 on Wolfe Island Ontario, Canada.

How to search Irish Records

Hi there,
I have been doing really well with my Australian, Scottish and English heritage then I came across the Irish branch of the family and now I am not sure where to go from here.
Can anyone give me some hints on the best way to approach the irish records, ie online sites. I know i am going to have to pay for information but any hints on how not to spend too much and how to narrow things down would be great.
The names I'm looking at are James Collins - abt 1855 Ireland somewhere, Magaret Neil abt 1854 somewhere in Ireland. I know some of their kids were born in Antrim the others in Glasgow, Scotland.
I have other branches to search as well - last names Frew and Goode.
Any help, hints or ideas would be greatly appreciated
thanks

Bridget was married to John Callaghan according to family Bridget was of noble blood and married beneath her! Got very little info on Bridget or her husband John only that in 1900 one of their sons James married Margaret Nolan & they were living in the parish/district of URLINGFORD, County Kilkenny at the time of the marriage.
I have confirmation that the son James( Margaret)later lived in both Urlingford Co.Kilkenny & Fennor Co.Tipperary.

I have searched the LDS & IFHI for her birth or marriage in the Urlingford Kilkenny & Fennor area of Tipperary but had no luck. Although I must admit Im still a novice I have realised I need to broaden my search.
Does anyone have any idea what do next please?
Thanks Patzy C UK.

Hi,

I'm looking for some help tracing James and Mary Denison (no idea of her maiden name) back to Ireland. We believe that they are in our line and appear on the UK Census in 1881 and they were born around 1849 which narrows it down a little. Unfortunately we have no information on where in Ireland they came from so we are getting stuck trying to go further back. We also believe that members of the family may have gone from Ireland to Canada or the US around the same time.

Any help/ideas would be much appreciated!

I am trying to find information on Edmund Kilgrew B:1830 (married Julia unknown B:1841). All I know is he was born in Ireland & came over to the USA before 1863 (that's when his first child Michael was born). They had 5 children (1863, 1866,1869, 1870, 1873). I have found burial stones for only one of them. The first I find anything on Edmund is in the 1880 United States Federal Census

I'm also trying to find a connection between Edmund and a Michael Kilgrew born June 1845 in Ireland (he came to USA in 1867). Michael married Mary F. Unknown born August 1841 in Ireland. They had several children, one being Michael Joseph Kilgrew (whom I have found a burial stone for in the same cemitary as John from the above group)

They both came from Ireland then settled first in South Abington, Plymouth, MA then they both moved to Whitman, Plymouth, MA . After that they split up, some stayed in Whitman, Plymouth, MA the rest moved to Rockland, Plymouth,MA.

I know it seems like a bit but I'm trying to find out the Ireland side of the family (before they came over).

Any thing would help..Thanks :o)

But we could be wrong. They had one child when they were in Ireland and his name was John and he was born in 1853. They came to the US somewhere between 1853-1857.

Re his naturalization papers, he left Co Fermanagh &
sailed from Liverpool on "The Great Eastern" to New York City arriving July 1863. Son of James DUFFY & ?Elizabeth.

We are trying to get information regarding Bryan who was probably born around 1809. Family history states that he was born in Kilkenney. His obituary requested that it be copied to New Ross. Bryan passed away in August, 1881 in the US, Ohio.

Question---are there newspapers that one can readily research to determine if an obit appeared in a New Ross paper at that time?

He was married to Mary Collins according to family history, although we have also been told it could be Mary Hart.

Three daughters were born: Catherine born, 1842; Mary born 1843 or 1844; Julia, born, 1847. Daughters all born in Ireland.

Since New Ross is mentioned in at least two counties we are finding it difficult to determine Bryan's true Irish roots.

We have also learned he may have had a brother, Matt.

If anyone could help untangle yet another Irish mystery we would be so grateful.

Thank you.

I have two brothers that immigrated over to the US before 1860. I know that at one point they both lived in Wilmington, DE. Owen died very young leaving behind a wife named Margaret and children {James} {Michael} {Sarah Ellen} {Margaret} and I believe {Mary}. Owen's wife and children moved to NJ by the 1880s and Michael and his family stayed in DE. I would like to know if anyone has an immigrated family with two sons named Michael(born abt 1825} and Eugene Owen (born abt 1830) that immigrated either to WIlmington, DE or Baltimore, MD. I did find a possible link to the ship called the "Mississippi" Anyone have family that crossed over on that ship?

INFO ONLY -- DO NOT REPLY Family Histories in the National Library of Ireland and ideas for researching your surname

To try and pin down your surname in Ireland:

1. Read about the history and distribution of your surname in an Irish Surname book at your local library; that will give you an idea as to which province to begin your search.
2. Keep in mind that the present surname spelling may not represent the original spelling in Ireland; many names were misspelled, changed over time, anglicized, and the prefixes "O" and "Mac" were often dropped or added back on.
3. Check the wonderful IGI records at your local LDS (Mormon) Family History Center. These are births/christenings/marriages for the latter part of the 1860s, but for most counties there is some earlier and later information. The IGIs are in both microfiched form, 2-3 fiche for each county in Ireland, or computerized on their diskettes and addendum diskettes. The Mormon databases are also being placed on the Internet. I prefer the microfiched version in the FHCs. The FHCs are free and open to the general public, located in the most towns in the USA and elsewhere.
4. Check the 1876 landowners lists available at some of the Rootweb-Genconnect Queries websites.
5. Although Ireland is a tiny country, about the size of West Virginia in the USA, it is made up of 32 counties divided into four provinces - Ulster, Connacht, Leinster, Munster. The province of Ulster is further divided into the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
6. CONNACHT: Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo. MUNSTER: Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford. LEINSTER: Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny,
Leix (Laois), Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, Wicklow. ULSTER: (Rep. IR): Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan; (No. IR): Antrim, Armagh, Derry/Londonderry, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone.
7. Seriously consider hosting an "orphan" Genconnect website to benefit all of your fellow Irish researchers. I know I have good information to share for the websites presently down.

For those fortunate enough to be able to visit Ireland, the following family histories are located in the National Library of Ireland.
Looking for ancestry on McAuliffe--trying to find my grandfather's Irish connection. I think from the county Cork but I am not sure--my grandfather dies 30 years ago. I beleive he was born in the USA, in New York. His parents were both Irish. I don't know when they immigrated to the USA. My grandfather was born in 1899 or 1900 so am assuming parents would have been born in the 1870-1884 range. Also assuming my great granparents probably were the immigrants in the 1840's? or something like that. Any help would be appreciated. Would love to know more about my Irish ancestry. Again thanks.

Don't know the relation. He eventually went to Louisiana and married one named Susannah Rush or Roche and had 4(?) children, Samuel, Anne, Francis, and Hester (Esther). She would be my grandmother. I know very little about Samuel and would like to know more. This is purely for geneological purposes. Does anyone know more?

I am research my 5th g-grandfather. I have been able to trace him to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in the year 1800. A history of Westmoreland County indicates that he came with his family from Ireland. If this book is correct, he came to Pennsylvania from Ireland in the year 1800 or shortly before that. With him came his wife Margaret (last name unknown) and at least one daughter Betsy Kirkpatrick. There could have been more daughters that came over with the family but this is the only one I can verify was with them. I have located a Moses Kirkpatrick from the Fax Growers List of 1796. Since my Moses was a farmer also, I thought there may be a connection. This Moses is listed as living in Drumhome Parish, Donegal County. If anyone can give me any information about this Kirkpatrick, I would be greatful.

I have been searching an online death register database and have a few questions. What is the difference between a Union and District? Also, does this register lead to more information such as parents names or is this as good as it gets? Thanks

Jbugos

I would be really grateful if someone who has more experience than me in researching family trees could please help me. I am tracing my Irish roots on both my mother and my fathers side, however on the English census my ancestors have put down place of birth Ireland. Except for one occasion when one of them put Qeenstown, is it possible to find the county of origin even though they were not specific on the census???? If so how????

Thanxs in advance.
Avril.

Great-great Grandfather (James Powers born between 1813-1820) emmigrated from Ireland to Massachusetes prior to 1850. Between 1852 and 1857 he and his family relocated to Wonewoc, Wisconsin. He came from Gordovan (soundex) Ireland; Irish spelling may be something like "Gortnabhan". Would like to visit his birthplace, but cannot find any reference location in any lexicon. Don't know what county this was in, but probably a very small village. Can anyone help with location?

Hi! My paternal g.g.g.grandfather was Thomas Tuell. We know that he immigrated to the US from Ireland in about 1820. We do not know specifically from WHERE in Ireland. I have read and heard that Tuell is simply an older form of O'toole. I know that some names are regional. If anyone knows where the Tuell name is common in Ireland (if it IS regional at all) please let me know!

Thanks, Michelle
