Ireland Civil Registration - Newbie Question

Ireland Civil Registration - Newbie Question

I recently purchased a World Explorer subscription. I'm having no trouble with the French-Canadian side of my family, but am struggling with the Irish side. How do I get info from the Civil Registration indexes? When I search only very limited information returns - name, birth year, district and vol/pg number. With so little information, it is impossible to determine which belong to my family. How do I view the actual document?

I am sure this has probably been answered before, but I searched and couldn't find a thread, so my apologies and thanks for your patience in advance.

ORDERING CERTIFICATES

GRO ROSCOMMON

If the event occurred in what is now the Republic of Ireland, you can't view the certificates on-line and you need to order a photocopy of the certificate from GRO Roscommon for €4. http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can’t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

Put the reference details on the form (anywhere). Don’t worry about leaving some boxes blank. As long as GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter (where there is one), volume and page number they should find it.

GRONI

If the event occurred in what is now Northern Ireland (Counties Armagh, Antrim, Derry/Londonderry, Down, Fermanagh & Tyrone), you can view the certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

(You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2 to a view a certificate).

You could also cross check the dates you find with parish records if they are Roman Catholics

http://www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx
these microfilms are free

or you could check with
https://rootsireland.ie which you have to pay for

or for a few counties (Kerry, Cork, Carlow, Dublin) there are some free records hear
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/captcha...

also on ancestry there are some parish records you could cross check with - narrow the search field to births and there are two files
Ireland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911294
Ireland, Select Catholic Birth and Baptism Registers, 1763-1912

You have polar opposites in research here -- French-Canadian research has to be one of the easiest ones in the world, given how good the records are, and the use of the woman's maiden name for all of her life. Ireland, on the other hand, is extremely difficult because of the lack of records, so you have to be more creative. The 1911 and 1901 census are both available online and that can be a good way to get started, and also to try and narrow down which of the families might be yours. If you post what you do know about your group, perhaps we can help you on your way.

Surnames: Sullivan O'Sullivan Moynihan
Thanks for the responses. So it sounds like I'm not just missing something - this is actually a challenge for everyone. I have the 1911 and 1901 census for my grandmother and what I believe is the registry volume/page number for my grandfather's birth, but that is all I've been able to find.

Here is from what I've been told but I have nothing confirmed:
My grandfather was Michael Sullivan b 1903, Goleen, Cork, son of Jeremiah b 1860 Goleen, Cork and and Mary McCarthy b 1869 Dunmanus, Cork, grandson of Jeremiah (maybe Denis) b 1830 Skibbereen, Cork and Catherine Coughlin b 1831 Skibbereen, Cork, great grandson of Daniel Sullivan and Catherine McCarthy.

My grandmother was Ellen Moynihan b 1898 Co. Kerry, daughter of Arthur Moynihan b 1867 Co. Kerry and Catherine ? b 1869 Co. Kerry, Granddaughter of Manus Moynihan b 1840 Co. Kerry and Hannah Buckley b ? Co. Kerry. I do know one of my grandmother's brother's was a priest - Fr. Arthur Moynihan who had a parish somewhere in Co. Kerry. He died in the 1980s I believe.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

You are fortunate in that, just in the last couple of weeks, that the Catholic parish records for Ireland were put online:

http://registers.nli.ie/

Once you sort out which parish they belonged to, you'll be on your way. Not searchable, but easily browseable.
