Thomas Brown and Ann Gibson Families

looking for information on my great grandfather Thomas Brown he lived in Pettigo Ireland ( Ulster, Fermanagh )was an Orangeman. Married Ann Gibson in January of either 1863-1864 in Drumkeeran Fermanagh and moved to Canada and had 10 children. They settled in southern Ontario. We have records of their life in Ontario but know nothing about their families in Ireland. We believe that Thomas's father was John Brown and his mother was Eliza or Elizabeth Reid. Ann's father was Andrew Gibson.
Very interested in finding out more about Thomas and Ann's parents and siblings.
Any information would be appreciated, I Thank-you in advance for you help.

Returning!

After several years of being away from the Fermanagh sites, I have returned! I had been concentrating on raising a grandson, who is now in school, and concentrating on my mom's side of the family, from Canada. Well, thanks to rootweb and a 10 year old post, I connected with a cousin in Fermanagh and now have a reason to visit! I am making plans for a month long visit next May/June. I've tentatively reserved a small cottage for a month in Manorhamilton, where my grandfather was from. Figure it will be a good central location if I fly into Shannon, spend time in Leitrim and Fermanagh and then time in Dublin, Belfast and the tourist things! Especially Ring of Kerry and Giant's Causeway.
Any and all suggestions for where to visit and what to see are appreciated. I'll be 67, traveling alone and like the outdoors. Will definately be in Mullagh, Leitrim and Boho, Fermanagh and also will have to get to Sligo as Yeats mom's mother Elizabeth Middleton is related to my gr grandmother, also an elizabeth Middleton!
Does my preliminary plan sound reasonable? Still waiting to make plane reserevations, that will firm up my dates and then I can go fromthere!
For nearly 40 years, my mantra has always been, "Someday in Ireland". Well, I applied for my passport yesterday and someday is coming!

I don't have anything on an Agnes JOHNSTON in my research notes on Co. Fermanagh, Co. Monaghan and Co. Tyrone Johnstons. You might find Andrew CRAWFORD in the Freeholders or Tithe Applotments, though, and narrow down your search for a specific location where they might have lived -- and where you might research further records (especially surviving church records). The Tithes index for Co. Fermanagh shows:

Andrew Crawford, Esq. - Cleenish - Drumconnor - 1834
Andw. Crawford - Galloon - Lettergreen - 1834

There are several excellent County Fermanagh genealogy web sites, including Fermanagh Gold, IGP, Genuki, RootsChat, and Rootsweb/Ancestry.

I hope some of this is helpful!

Annie
The date 1840 might be old enough to have Barbara searches
through Parish records. Two way os finding birth records
is www.rootsireland.ie (pay website)you can search all Ireland members for the birth of a Barbara in all Ireland and with the name Nathaniel should have no problem. Only 4 counties are not members.
also
www.emeralancestors.com

A copy of a church record will give you place/parish, mother and father's name as well as mother's maiden name.

www.geneology.nationalarchives.ie
No Nathaniel in either the Tithe 1833 or in the Griffith Valuation 1847-1864 (Fermanagh 1862) There is however, many years between.

The British phone book for Fermanagh shows 5 Rutledges.

Annette Code
Canada

There are not a lot of irish records for the early 1800's.

Most documents such as census were destroyed in the Four Ccurts Fire 1922

Tithe Applotments 1823-1837 is the earliest census substitute www,genealogy.nationalarchives.ie

Griffith Valuation 1847-1864 www.askaboutireland.ie
(these would be those left behind)date for Fermanagh 1862

Annette Code
ps in my husbands history of the ship to Canada is that
two brother's travelled and one died and buried at sea.
I've been through Thousands of passenger ship records but
have yet to find any documentation to support that.

There were 5 Hewitt's with land holdings and 202 Wilson's.
The Parish's they had in common are Derry Vullan, Kinawley
and Templecarn.

Baptism records are available on line for Fermanagh with a not for profit but fee paying website.

www.rootsireland.ie & a free to view

www.emeraldancestry.com

The Parish records except for one Parish RC 1783-1790 gap
1821-1900 and remainder 1810+ Cof I 1801 earliest Parish then 1836 & 1875 so as you can see records would be spotty
at best. With both parents names you should easily find any children they may have had in Ireland.

The British phone book for Fermanagh shows only 1 Hewitt listed and he is in Enniskillen, Fermanagh. 38 Wilsons with many in Enniskillen. You could try writing the Hewitt, the address comes with a postal code for Northern Ireland.

Good luck.

Annette Code

Hi Tim,
Though I am crazy busy with new cousin's I WILL find this book and somehow get it into a place where it can be seen by all. The reason it's in the states is that the author James R Masterson is from a branch of Mastersons who emigrated to the southeastern and mid-western parts of the US. He may be part of the "Bat" Masterson crowd and he has written quite a few books on these areas of the country. Watch for it. I'll try and let those interested in Patrick and his maybe descendant VC winner James Edward Ignatius Masterson. That is one of my projects (which I'm dragging terribly with) as both of them may be connected to my branch. Stay Tuned. I won't lose you as I've been copying your posted info to my Mastersons on the other side of the pond for a while. If you have any other info on Patrick let me know. I'll do the same (and I think I've got stuff for Patrick I've not had time to look at).It will help. Robin

Hello Dorset. There is a 52 page book by James R Masterson entitled "A Branch of the Masterson Family; concerning Notes
regarding Patrick Campbell Masterson and his wife Mary (Smith) and their descendants". Not the exact wording, but close enough. The only place that may have a copy is (believe it or not) The Grand Rapids Library in Grand Rapids Michigan, USA. That tidbit from The National Library of Congress (Apr 2013). I am a Masterson descendant via gggrandfather, Fenian, Thomas P. Masterson b. Dublin 1828 d. The first child was Thomas b 1805 Drumacahan - it is likely but not proven he was called after his grandfather who would have been born about 1765. The 2nd child was Margaret Patterson b 1805 in Drumacahan, Drumkeeran - she was the 2nd wife of my 4 x Great Grandfather Robert Lawson of Drumchorich, Drumkeeran.

In my Fermanagh research it has been quite unusual in the early records to find a middle name - where it exists it has usually been a clue to an earlier generation - so the name Mark may help to eventually identify Samuel Patterson of 1764.
The father might have been William, who died 14.4.1883 in Bodoney. He left a will in which he nominated Samuel Ruttledge as executor. Nathaniel had a brother Samuel (as per the 1911 census) so this might be their father.

They were Church of Ireland so I’d check the COI baptism records for Kilskeery parish to see if they confirm that.
