I am a Somers on my mothers side and a direct descendant of the James and Mary Somers of MaGuires Bridge. I have been there and have seen the gravestone erected to Mary by her emigre sons Charles and Francis. Charles was my great great grandfather. The two sons settled in Toronto and descendants include the composer Harry Somers who died a few years ago. The family did well in Toronto and a decendant, James Somers, received the OBE for service to the Empire, having served as City Clerk of Toronto for 60 years (this in the 1930's I believe). The family was, like many Ulster protestant families, culturally as much Scots as Irish. In Canada they were members of the Orange Lodge. Subsequent generations produced few sons and the last Charles Somer (my grandfather died about 25 years agao. His only son, Paul, did last year. THe latters two sons were adopted. Pamela, I can check some family notes for more info on the brothers in Canada, but I am afraid I have no information going back further than James and Mary.
Richard

Dear Hannah, thank you so much for your reply.
My connection with the Slack family is via my wifes mother who was the daughter of George Ashford Slack the grandson of Joseph Slack. I am very happy to share my information with you, my email address is
mervburley@hotmail.com
I have not heard of the "Records of the Slack Family of Ireland" and would appreciate any info you can provide.
Look forward to hearing from you
Kind regards
Merv

Hi
Joseph Snr was my great-great-grandfather.His son was Joseph Jnr.The family all came to Inverell,NSW and pretty much settled there (I was born there and I'm 35 today).most of his sons were excellent drovers. Joseph Jnr (my great grandfather) married a Wyndham - Catherine. Her mother was Mary Ann Wyndham, daughter of George Wyndham who has a 'distinguished' line in Aus. Anyway I have all my family history and am glad to hear if you have any interest.Susan married William Uruquhart(1906), Sarah married Thomas Carroll. My dad Algie (Joseph Jnr's grandson)was a lot older than my mum and served in WW2 although he didn't have to (over 35), but volunteered and was injured twice seriously. He died when I was 7. Have you ever heard of 'Records of the Slacke Family in Ireland'? I could email it if you don't have. Would be good to hear back.
Hannah Jane Slack

Hi Suzanne,

Here is some information on Humphreys in Fermanagh. First, the 1862 Griffiths evaluation lists one Christopher in Cullaghmore and another in Drumhoney. Note that there is also a Royal in Cullaghmore, indicating close relation to my Keys ancestor. In a letter from about 1831, Royal Keys mentions uncles Christopher and William Humphreys of Crevenish.

Humpheries	Christopher	Derryvullan	Cullaghmore
Humpheries	Johnston	Magheraculmoney	Drumbane
Humpheries	Johnston	Magheraculmoney	Drumreane
Humpheries	Royal	Derryvullan	Cullaghmore
Humphrey	Charles	Aghalurcher	Cornakessagh
Humphrey	Denis	Devenish	Levally Lower
Humphreys	Francis	Kinawley	Kinawley
Humphreys	John	Kinawley	Kinawley
Humphreys	John	Magheraculmoney	Kesh
Humphreys	John, Jr.	Drumkeeran	Rossgole
Humphreys	John, Sr.	Drumkeeran	Rossgole
Humphreys	Patrick	Derryvullan	Drogan
Humphreys	Patrick	Derryvullan	Druminshinardagh
Humphreys	Robert	Kinawley	Kinawley
Humphreys	Thomas	Magheraculmoney	Kesh
Humphries	Anne	Derryvullan	Carranboy
Humphries	Bernard	Magheraculmoney	Ardvarny West
Humphries	Charles	Derryvullan	Drumshane (Lisnarick)
Humphries	Charlotte	Derryvullan	Coolisk
Humphries	Christopher	Magheraculmoney	Drumhoney
Humphries	Christr.
My ancestor Royal Keys from County Fermanagh (Coolaness, Derryvullan North) emigrated to Canada and settled in Marmora, Ontario in 1831. There was already at least one Keys family in Ontario at the time. Royal was the son of Hugh Keys and Dorothy Humphreys of Drumard, which had been in the Humphreys family for several generations. There is a great deal of information on the Humphreys family in Fermanagh.

Roy

I just read your post and you have been in touch with my daughter Cathy Grain. I have found my grandmother's birth certificate and her parents were Edward Humphries, born in Pettigo and Elizabeth Tumath. My grandmother was Elizabeth Cataherine born 1885. They came to Canada in 1901 and lived in Portage la Prairie. Grandma's mother died when she was about 2 years old. Her father remarried. They ran a boarding house in Portage and her step-mother was a seamstress. I would appreciate hearing from you as to how we are related.
Diane

I have some favourite websites for searching in Ireland most generic:

www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom+Ireland+Co. Fermanagh

www.igp-web.com + County

www.familysearch.org has a search function on the main page, but if nothing worthwhile there see their New PILOT
by clicking in the top left hand corner 'search records' pull down menu and click PILOT. These records will give you a film number - click underlined name. Take anything pertinent to your nearest LDS History Center to few. Phone first as individual centers don't carry all records. If there is anything after 1863 the time of Civil Registration, records can be found at the General Registry Office in Dublin see the website www.groireland.ie
Anything between 1863-1875 I have on a CD and can look them up for you and post here. codeannette@yahoo.ca Enniskillen is on the border of two counties so records can be in either if they have a shared Registration District.

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'
Annette Code

Hi Helen

That's a lot to digest!!

I'll have to add that in to my tree as and when.

My main focus is in the male line through my dad, which at the moment is stuck at this Charles Montgomery. Although I'm also interested now in Elizabeth's father and his line as they are also Montgomerys.

I also want to go through my mum's lineage which takes in the O'Neills of County Down (where my mum was born and raised) and Davidsons in County Tyrone (my maternal grandmother's birthplace).

I may switch focus to this over the next few weeks, although I don't think I'll get too far as it would seem you need to be 'on the ground'in Northern Ireland to be able to check what records remain in person.

I'll be across this weekend but it's a short visit to pick up my son so unfortunately I won't have the opportunity to get down to Fermanagh.

I'll make the effort to get back up to the cemetery early next week and let you know how I get on. (Incidentally there are a fair number of headstones for Dunsmore/Dunsmuir).

I'd like to view your tree but I'm not sure I have the necessary privileges on here. I have a login but I don't have any kind of paying membership.

All the best

William

The 1861 census was the one I referred to in my original reply. They were living at 48 Hamilton Road, Newarthill.

I wondered why Mary wasn't on this return when you mentioned she too was a sibling of William, however I've found she married William Young Campbell on 4th Feb 1861 so when the census was carried out she would have been living with her husband and possibly his family.

I believe she was born about 1844 and died on 2nd July 1925.

It seems that George's father Charles may have been married to awoman also called Mary, Charles being born about 1790 and Mary about 1795. Unfortunately I don't have any more on them at the moment. I do have a theory though - I can't find any mention of a Charles Montgomery when I search through the Fermanagh records and I wonder if he came from outside the area. I think it probably needs a trawl through the parish records to find his marriage to Mary.

I took a trip up to the cemetery yesterday - I was wrong about Priestfield -it openened in 1981 not 1891 - wasn't wearing my glasses when I read it!!

I then went down to High Blantyre Churchyard Cemetery and walked about for an hour or so but to no avail. On my way home I drove down Hunthill Road and past Hunthill Lane.

However today I contacted the local council and obtained the following information:

On 12 November 1902 (the day after Elizabeth passed away) George purchased two lairs, Section I numbers 481 and 482. The Lairs were transferred to William Montgomery on 9 Sep 1906.

The following are interred in Lair 481 (the date is the date of burial):

Elizabeth Montgomery 24 Nov 1902 Aged 83
George Montgomery 21 Mar 1903 Aged 86
Thomas D. Montgomery 22 Oct 1907 Aged 3 months
William Montgomery 29 Jan 1920 Aged 75

Lair 482:

John Reid 25 Aug 1908 8 weeks
John B. Montgomery 21 Sep 1911 2 months
Jane Montgomery 9 Oct 1933 Aged 86

Some of that is quite tragic although not out of place for the time.

When I next get a chance I'll go back and find the Lairs, unfortunately there has been a lot of vandalism in the cemetery and a great many headstones have been knocked over and broken.

If I find them I'll take a photo and e-mail it to you.

All the best

William
Hi

I'm fairly sure now it's not a coincidence.

I was a bit reticent because somewhere else on this site someone has George, Elizabeth and eldest son William being born in Armagh, which obviously conflicts with the Fermanagh angle, however as my own dad spoke of Maguiresbridge I think they have got something wrong. Also there were very few Montgomerys in Armagh, most of them settling in North Down (Bangor, Newtownards) and West Ulster (Fermanagh/Donegal, possibly even into Cavan).

So it would seem our Grandfather's were cousins, both called William and born 4 years apart (mine was born in 1908, had one son, my dad and died in 1977), which means we share a Great Great Grandfather.

I was born and brought up in the area and indeed myself, my mother (my dad passed away 3 years ago) and my 3 sisters all still live locally, one in Priory Bridge, Blantyre.

On the extract of William's marriage entry it has him marrying Jane Black, daughter of John Black and Agnes Lang. I wonder if Jane was her given name but she was known as Jean - I don't think that would have been particularly uncommon.

I'm intrigued by the tale of George and Elizabeth and also the fact that there are no details of his parents on the extract of his death - although you believe his father's name was Charles.

I'll be taking a trip up soon to the High Blantyre cemetries (High Blantyre Churchyard and Priestfield Cemetry) and try and locate a headstone. I'm going to try Priestfield first as it opened in 1891 and with George and Elizabeth not having had previous ties to the area it seems more likely they would be buried there.

I'll also be checking the 1871 census as this should confirm the other children born between 1861 and 1871.

Many thanks once again for the invaluable information you've given me.

All the best

William

Hello

My grandfather was also William Montgomery and my great great grandfather William Montgomery was born c1844 (He's down as 16 in the 1861 census).

The George I've found who is this William's father died on 18 March 1903 in Blantyre, Lanarkshire aged 86 years.

Unfortunately no parent details are given on the extract of his death certificate.

His wife Elizabeth passed away a few months prior to him on 11 November 1902, her age stated as 83 years. This doesn't square entirely with the 1861 census which has her as 40 at that time but I understand that is a common problem at that time, where stated ages can be out by up to 15 years!!

On the extract of her death certificate her parents are given as William Montgomery, Agricultural Labourer (deceased) and Catherine Montgomery (nee Montgomery not Scott).

It could be the same people you are looking at or simply a really close coincidence.

If you come across anything to confirm or disprove the link please let me know.

Many Thanks

William

I'm sorry I can't answer you're enquiry however I would like to thank you as you may have put another piece in to my own jigsaw.

I have been doing some research through my dad's family.

I could recall him telling me that his father had told him that the family had come from Maguiresbridge.

In the last week, on checking my Grandfather's Grandfather's (William Montgomery) marriage entry for 12th May 1865 I found that his parents were George and Elizabeth (nee Montgomery)Montgomery.

I then checked the census for 1861 and found them in Newarthill in the County of Lanark. This listed George as being 45 years old and Elizabeth as 40. They had sons, William,George and Andrew and daughters Elizabeth and Sarah J. Both parents and eldest son William are listed as being born in Ireland with the other children being born in Scotland.

I couldn't find them in the 1851 census returns and therefore concluded that they must have come across the North Channel between 1851 and 1861.

As George was 45 in 1861 he must have been born in 1815/6.

I'm now wondering if this is the same George and Elizabeth that you are investigating?

I believe that my great, great great grandfather George Graham was born in Fermanagh but moved with his parents James and Jane (nee Thomson)and his siblings to Stonehouse, Lanarkshire. Sometime before 1874. In 1874 George and his wife Sydney Thomson marries in Stonehouse. I believe however, that Sydney was also from Ireland (don't know where, though). James Graham parents were George Graham and Nancy Spiers, James were Alexander Thomson and Catherine Bruce and Sydney's parent were John Thomson and Dorothea (I think) Johnstone.

Does anyone know of the Graham and Thomson families?

PS I'm also posting this in the Surnames list.

Looking for information about Owen Patrick Doonan who lived from about 1755 to ? and Helene Gallagher who was born about 1860. He is reported to have been born in Ballyshannon, Donegal, and she in Fermanagh. He is also reported to have married Mary Rogers. He had the following children: Margaret; Susan, Mary, Nellie (Eleanor), Owen Jr. Catherine, John (Jack) and Mary Ellen. All of the children immigrated to the St. Sylvestre area of Quebec in the mid 1800s. We are trying to identify where in either Donegal or Fermanagh these Doonans lived. The children were all reported born in Fermanagh. Can anymore shed iight or point us in the right direction?

is your mccreery the one who moved from augustus county, virginia to clark county, kentucky, finally settling in franklin county, illinois? according to our records, he was born in 1793, married a harrel in 1816, and settled in southern illinois about 1813. i am in my 80th year, and my gggrandfathers are mccreery, mitchell, otey and loomis. i would be interested in corresponding w you if we are talking about the same mccreery. i have a really good photoportrait of my gggrandfather and gggrandmother mccreery, dating from about 1885.

Hi,
God only knows why they came here! They weren't farmers, so they didn't come for the great farm steading opportunities! Again, I'll see if my Mom knows anything when she gets home. My Grandma spoke highly of her grandfather. I believe he was a business man in Portage la Prairie. I would guess that one hearty soul travelled over and the rest followed. I know that my Grandma had her Uncle Ed's journal of his voyage over from the Old Country. I'm not sure where that went, but I thought it was rather interesting.

We know some Humphreys in our town that are no direct relation to us that we know of anyway. The next time we see them, I will have to ask them where their family came from exactly. Maybe they are related to you.

I have read your previous entries, and you mention that Irvinestown is not a large community, and that they were all descended from one man. In that case, if we go back far enough, we would have common ancestry. This is very cool, as we have traced the Squair family roots back a long way, but did not have as much success with Grandma's (Irvina, named after Irinestown) family history. Thank you!

Either my Mother, Diane Granger or myself will post more next week.
Cathy

Hello,
I was happy to receive your post. I phoned my Mom to ask her what my gg grandfather's name was, and she replied "Grandpa Humphreys". :)

She will be back in town next week though and she has a copy of g grandma's birth certificate. I will be able to get back to you re: his name. My g grandmother came with her family, except for one sister that remained in Ireland. My Mom has that info too.

My g grandmother, Elizabeth Catherine Humphreys, married Thompson Isaiah (sp?) Ethelbert Rutledge. How's that for a handle? His family was also originally from Ireland and had immigrated to Portage la Prairie Canada.

I'll post more next week.
Cathy
