Hi,

I've been losing sleep over this man for almost a year. Can anyone claim him please?

Thomas Rennick, born Armagh around 1830. His family were not from Armagh as there is no trace of any Rennicks in Armagh at that time so it is believed his parents were visiting at the time of his birth.

He married Anne McCauley from Fermanagh. I lost some info from my PC but there was another link with Thomas and Fermanagh and I was led to believe his parents were from there and after his birth took him back to Fermanagh.

I also have Thomas on Griffiths Valuation in Armagh when he grew up. Another piece of info is that he lived at one time (his early 20s I think) in a house in Armagh owned by a man named Hazlett.

Thomas and Anne lived in Derry after they married and had 4 children there before moving down to Sligo, where they had 4 more children. Thomas died in 1901 after the Census as I have him living in Temple Street, Sligo in 1901.

I'm desperate to find his parents and/or siblings. Does anyone know Thomas Rennick, or indeed, his wife Anne McCauley?

Thank You.

Lyn Rennick
LynRennick2000@aol.com

Beatty had
a child Ellen in Canada I believe. Thanks ahead of time.

Who was Ann Graham who married Robert Beatty 26 Dec 1722 in same place? Thanks for any clues anyone can give.

Humphreys / Humphrys in Derryvullen

Hello,

I am searching for some conformation of a suspected connection to the Derryvullen area. My 2nd great grandfather Robert Humphrey(s)was born in Feb. 1822 in Ireland. His son Alexander (born 1849 in Philadelphia, PA) had the middle name Royal. I have found in the IGI a Robert Humphrys, son of Royal and Margaret Gunney, who was Christened March 3, 1822 in Irvinestown, Derryvullen. This seems to fit, but what means of confirmation are in existance? Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank You
Jim Humphrey

I have posted a site in hopes to track the MOHAN genealogy as far back as the name itself. I know there are several Mohan genealogies out there. Perhaps we can connect those together too.

I'm looking for more information in Fermanagh for a family that immigrated to Australia in 1842 on the ship "Broom" to Australia.

Alexander Gardner (b. abt 1813 - 1817) and his wife Mary Anne Symington (b. abt 1815) with their children Christopher James b. 1836, Fermanagh, and Johanna b. 1842 at sea, settled in Manilla, New South Wales, Australia.

The Broom ship passenger documentation has Mary Anne Symington from Ennidskillen, Fermanagh as well as her husband Alexander Gardner.

Alexander's parents are listed as James and Mary Gardner. Mary Anne's parents are listed as George Symington and Elizabeth Gardner.

I'm wondering if there might be a marriage record for them or their parents in Fermanagh. Or a birth record for Christopher James or anything else that might help with the search for their ancestors in Fermanagh.

Thank you

I am researching a Catharine McDonald who married John McGuire in Ireland. Catharine was born in 1822 and John was born in 1810. I do not know where exactly in Ireland. They immigrated to the U.S. somewhere around 1852 with their first born son, Thomas (b-1850). They eventually ended up in Akron, Ohio (1870) census with Thomas, James, Ellen, Mary and Elizabeth (b. 1862). Elizabeth (Lizzie) is my gr grandmother. She married John McGuire - yes a McGuire married a McGuire, as did her sister Mary. I have found Catharine and John McGuire's cemetary headstone in Akron, Ohio and know that John died about 1886 in Ohio, but I cannot find them before 1870. Thanks

William's parents were Bernard & Catherine ( nee Currie )and he also had a brother, Michael, who followed or went with him to Glasgow in the mid to late 1860's. I know nothing of Elisabeth's background so any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks - in anticipation.
Malcolm Biggins
Maguire/ McGuire family, co. Fermanagh > Canada

Hi Patrick,
I would like to thank you for your reply to the message that I posted. You are correct when you say that parish priest who were invoved in the marriage of John Keefe and Bridget Lunney were Rev Edward McHugh and Rev Hugh Cassidy. The family that I want the information on is the Maguire/ McGuire family who I believe Emigrated to Canada in the same year as the John Keefe family and settled in the very same county and district in Mitchell Ontario, Canada,
My grandfather John McGuire married their daughter Rose at Stratford Ontario, Canada May 24, 1857. Until I found the John Keefe family that they emigrated in the same year 1842 as my grandfather John Maguire/McGuire all that I knew was he came from County Fermanagh .I didn't know the parish or townland. Now I believe that he came from the very same place as the John Keefe family in Knockninny Parish. It is a long short but my only chance of finding my. I contacted the Killmore Catholic Diocese Maguire /McGuire family in County, Fermanagh, I have contacted the Killmore Catholic Diocese ann they told me that the diocese didn't begin keeping Baptism records until 1834. Which was to late for my grandfather who was born in 1828, If could provide me with the mailing address of the Catholic parish in Kinawley and Killesher parish it would be of great helpThese are the people I'm searching for
Michael Maguire
Born: ABT 1800 Knockninny
John Maguire
Born: 1828 - 1831 Knockninny
Emigrated: 1842 Mitchell, Ontario, Canada

Thank you,
Charles McGuire

Looking for information on Keirnan or Kiernan family from County Monaghan (maybe County Femanagh or County Cavan)... My great-grandfather, John Swanzy Kiernan, left Ireland for Canada in 1860 from the Glasslough area (Parish of Trough) in County Monaghan. He had lived in the Parish of Drumsnat (County Monaghan) earlier. He was a farmer and a teacher... He was Church of Ireland .
Also looking for Swanzy and Malcolm from Monaghan (and maybe Fermanagh or Cavan)... John Swanzy Kiernan (or Keirnan), Married Mary Malcolm (or Meaclem or something close) in Naghill Townland of Drumsnat Parish in 1834... It is possible (likely) that his mother's maiden name was Swanzy (maybe Mary Swanzy ???)
William Bothwell was a farmer at Ratona and paid a rectorial tithe of 12/11 in 1826. His son William was born at Ratona in 1832(date from family bible). I am trying to find any information about the older William and his family.

The younger William died in August 1901, and was owner of the farm at Ratona when he died. His obituary states that his brother-in-law Mr Plunket attended the funeral, which would mean that he had a sister.

The younger William was my greatgrandfather

Grateful for any help. I live in France and cannot visit Fermanagh very often Joan

A decade ago, a second cousin of mine made a trip to the British Isles. Partly playing tourist, partly on a fact hunting trip. He turned up no leads on his grandmother's origin's. However, he recalls as he stepped off the tour bus in Enniskillen that the first person he bumps into could have been a brother. Tall, thin, dark hair, same features.

He was looking for information on Jane Graham of Enniskillen, his grandmother from northern ireland.

He found a cemetery with some Graham's, and a deed book, but nothing definite.

Perhaps someone can help? Here is what I know of her:

Jane was born 19 Jul 1826 in Eniskillin, Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

She emmigrated to Ontario, Canada, possibly with her parents given her age, in 1832 sometime.

This was where she met and married John Stewart Sr, a logger in Ontario County, and with their family they went to the United States, first New York, then Michigan, and finally Washington State, leaving younger Stewart's behind in each state.

She died 30 Dec 1915 in Daisy, Stevens County, Washington and was bured in Fairview Cemetery, Gifford, Stevens County, Washington. The plot is up on an elevation, overlooking the ghost town that once was a small community on the Columbia River. I'm even blessed to have a picture of her, sitting in a rocking chair in Daisy, smile on her face, in the company of her children and grandchildren.

Here are two pointers to my databases where she can be found. The second has her picture.

http://genweb.net/~cousin/ged/wga12.html#I1696
http://genweb.net/~cousin/stewart/wbc00003.htm#t4

Cashlinney Church

Has anyone ever heard of, or know anything about, Cashlinney church? It is located north of Pettigo, near the Fermanagh-Donegal border, and was the closest church to people in several townlands there (eg. Tulynaloob). It is in ruin now, not having been used for many years, but I would like to find church records from it, if at all possible.
Jim

I'm looking for any information on my Irish ancestors - John Joseph was my grandfather. His parents were Patrick Treacy and Hannah McSweeny (or McSweeney) who was from Cork. JJ married Alice Moon from Grimsby - their son John Barry Treacy was my father. He disappeared when I was very young and died in 1967 so information is in short supply! Thank you to anyone who responds. I'm particularly keen to trace JJ's siblings and their descendants.

churches, graveyards, school near Pettigo

I was just looking over the 1905 Ordnance Survey (published in 1907) of Tullynaloob (a small townland north of Pettigo where my Oliver ancestors lived) and surroundings. Does anyone have any knowledge of Derrynashesk School? It appears to have been the closest to Tullynaloob at that time. I suspect children were educated at home, if at all, in the mid-1800's, but I'm always looking for new possible sources for info about my ancestors.

Also, I see on the map several listings of "Giants Grave". Know anything about those?

Finally, the largest town around Tullynaloob, without going to Pettigo, seems to be in the townland of Montiaghroe, about 2 1/2 miles east of Tullynaloob. It had Drumkinny School, a RC chapel and graveyard, a Methodist Mission Rom, the Drumkinny post office, and both standing stones and a stone circle. Any readers know about this area? I'd love to know more about the areas where my ancestors came from!
Thanks. Jim

My family has Emerys from County Fermanagh (mostly Magheraculmoney, Ardes and Enniskillen, but also from Drumkeeran and County Tyrone). William Emery married Isabella Nethery in about 1815, possibly as early as 1811, in Magheraculmoney, and had 8 children, all of whom emigrated with their respective spouses and children, to the Illawarra district, NSW Australia in 1838-1839, leaving their parents back home. The eldest child of William and Isabella was James, who married Sarah Nethery, the youngest child Alexander. They also had a sister named Jane, who also married a Nethery, Lancelot. Anyway, we have all the Australian side of things, now we're after the Irish side. We have no definites about William, he was born around 1790, in Drumkeeran (I think), Fermanagh, and possibly had a brother named Lenox (but this is not for certain). If you find out anything about your Irish Emerys, please contact me and we may be able to establish a link!

Regards

Lisa Hafey
Sydney Australia

I'm so confused!! I've been told that no one by the name of Dillon has lived in Co. Fermanagh. My GGGrandfather John Dillon b abt 1828, married Ann Birnie/Birney McNulty widow with son Pat McNulty. According to two of their childrens birth records they married May of 1848/9 Co. Fermanagh. Ann was born abt 1830. Their daughter Ann was born abt 1850 in Ireland and sometime after that they moved to Glasgow, Scotland. The rest of their children were born in Glasgow. Charles, Elizabeth died Infant, John, Jane died infant, Thomas Joseph my GGrandfather, Eliza Jane. In 1869 the whole family came to Dubuque, Iowa. The 1870 census shows John in Dubuque, but nothing after that. My GGrandfather who was 3 when they came to the US, said his father didn't come over. So did he die shortly after arriving, no record can be found. Or did he return to Scotland or Ireland. No record of him in Scotland in the old neighborhood. There is another couple old enough to be his parents, at the Glasgow place. John and Marie Dillon.
Can anyone help?
Marilyn
SAlem, OR

I am interested in a MAGUIRE family from Cleen (=Cleenish?), Fermanagh. The IGI shows that a Phillip Maguire (b. 1771) and his wife Mary had children: Anne b. 1807, John b. 1809, James b. 1813, Bridget b. 1818, and Susan b. 1820. I believe the son John Maguire is my g.g. gf, who married a Catharine MCMANUS b 1823-25, daughter of a John M. and Margaret McManus (possibly also from Fermanagh?). John Maguire and Catharine McManus emigrated about 1855 to E. Providence (Rumford) Rhode Island, (=Seekonk, Massachusetts bef 1862) and had children: Mary E. (McElroy), Catharine (McKenna), Phillip, William, John, and Susan Teresa (Obert). Please correspond if you know anything about either of these families.

My ancestors from Fermanagh were Mary Leonard and Edward Maguire. The baptismal record shows they were living in Coasan Townland, Cleenish Parish, Co. Fermanagh when their first child, Patrick, was born in March 1839. They emigrated to Cobourg, Ontario, a few years later and then to Lyon Co., Iowa after the Civil War. The name was changed to McGuire in Canada.

There were many Leonard families in Cobourg. The name Evor or Avor ran in the Leonard family, and still does.

While on the Fermanagh site yesterday in an 1821 census which included Irvinestown, I found my g-g-grandfather Thomas Roper (11)living with his grandparents David Trotter (72)Catherine Trotter (59) their sons George (29), William (16), Alexander (13) and daughter Catherine (22).
This co-incides with Thomas' death certificate in Victoria, Australia which states he was born in Irvinestown in 1810. He married in Paisley, Scotland in 1835, but I cannot find a birth - or his parents anywhere.
Going on the census I would presume his mother would be a trotter and wondered if anyone had information on this family.

Origin of Keys surname in County Fermanagh, Ireland

Can you help me identify the origin of the Keys surname in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland?

DNA testing has ruled out a genetic relationship with the Keys family at Lifford, which first appeared in Ireland under Elizabeth I and settled there under James 1.

The first documented Keys in County Fermanagh is Hugh Keys born ca.1660 and died in 1733. A mention of a Widow Ki (or Kee?) on a 1720 survey suggests that the name may have evolved in that period.

Documentary sources suggest that Keys (as well as other commono names such as MacKey, MacKay, MacKee, MacKoy, Hughes, Hewson, Eason, MacHugh and McGee) may have been an anglicized form of the Celtic Mac Aoidha (or son of Aodh, meaning "fire," anglicized as Hugh). In light of this, it may be relevant that the first documented Keys in Fermanagh bore the christian name Hugh.

One family of McKee originated in Myrton-McKee, Penninghame, Wigton, Scotland and settled in counties Down and Antrim. This line appears to account for a large proportion of McKees in Northern Ireland.

Another branch of Scottish McKees in Ireland derives from John McKie of Larg, Minnigaff, Kirkcudbright, descended from Sir Patrick McKie. This family settled in Derry.

MacHugh originated in Galway and spread into County Roscommon. The name is now frequent in counties Leitrim and Fermanagh.

The MacGee name in Ulster is either of Scottish, akin to MacDonnell (and thus ultimately Irish in origin), or is a from a Gaelic Irish group that lived on the Donegal and Tyrone borders. The early history of this branch is not known.

Finally, one source indicates that MacKee can also be a anglicization of Macan Caoich (coach = blind), and was used by the Oreilly of Breffney. This later evolved into Key(e)s.

Lastly, heraldry provides one further clue. The motifs on the Keys coats of arms found on gravestones in Fermanagh are common to many armorial bearings. However, one coat of arms in Scotland, that of the Aberach MacKay family, shows a strong resemblance. It has the lion rampant and hand in common with Keys arms, and also adds 10 fleur de lis on the outside of the shield. A relationship between the two is possible, but perhaps not probable.

Barring further documentary evidence, we must appeal to DNA to unravel this mystery. I invite males bearing the surnames McKee, McGee, McHugh, Hughes and variants of these to help solve the riddle by participating in DNA projects. Please contact me if interested.

Thank you.
Roy Keys

Ramsey/Ramsay family of Fermanaugh, Ireland

My Ramsey or Ramsay family came from a place called Irvinston, or similar name in Fermanaugh.
The most reliable data is that Anna/Anne Ramsey was born
in or near Irvinston 12 July 1829. I don't know if she was
married when she came to the US, married on the ship
or just before she left Ireland to Mr. McBride (McManus?). Mr. McBride drowned, the story goes, in Quebec or Montreal. They had a daughter who used the name Ella or Henrietta McBride and Evans(Anna's second husband was Henry George Evans). The daughter was born about 1848 in Canada. Etta Evans married 16 November 1876 in Brown County, Minnesota to William F. Smith.
Anna had an older sister, Isabelle/a. Isabelle may have
had a twin. The brothers were William and George. The
boys came to the US with an Uncle. (don't know if Isabelle
came over or not, but would assume so).
Anyone know this family?
