Hi Jan,

I'm not sure if you've been able to find out anything more about your Dad's family?
Not vitally important but I was looking up (unrelated) O'Connors earlier and came across a birth for Laurence N O'Connor in late 1928 and his mother's maiden name was Keegan... I'm guessing this is Larry from 10 Keegans Lane, your Dads cousin.

Cheers,

Ursula

Hello, Having returned from Dublin recently, I now know my ggggrandparents were blakes and lived in Blackrock in rathdown. Do you have any inscriptions at all for Blakes in your lists? They lived there in 1877 when my ggrandmother was born at 2 temple road. Would be very grateful to know if you have any listings. Thanking you in advance.

Hello

I am hoping that the offer for a lookup is still possible as I am having difficulty identifying burial places for several members of the family that were resident in the Rathdown area.
I really do not know where to start apart from they were known to be in Tilly Town at 1901 census point and thereafter in shankill.

If possible I would love to know the location of the following :

1. Anne Farrell 1837-1905 and her husband James who died before 1901.
2.Patrick James Farrell 1873- Circa 1936 and his wife Mary Byrne Farrell
2. William Mc Garry 1853-? and his wife Margaret Farrell Mc garry 1858-? (also she was daughter of anne and James, and eler sister of Patrick James)

Any help/tips where I shoud start my search or if you could help with a lookup would be tremendous.
Thanks in anticipation
stella Scott

Wonderful information, thank you so much! "... in 1863 the householder at No. 7 is Emanuel H. Orpen esq." Emanuel H. Orpen was the husband of John Bateman's sister, Letitia, and so an uncle of Jane Bateman. Presumably Jane was staying with her aunt and uncle at that address.

I think the family home in the 1820's might have been on Merrion Square, but I don't have an address to be more specific.

I dont think your Bateman family were living at that Peafield Tce. address during the 1820s. The earliest listing I have for Peafield Tce. is in 1840 when there are just 4 houses listed, I think probably in the process of being built. The surnames are Hooke, Browne, McGrath and Byrne.

There's no sign of Peafield Tce. in earlier 1830s listings.

By 1848 there are 22 houses on the terrace, with the occupant at no. 7 as Miss Graybourne. No sign of any Bateman households.

There were some changes to the occupants during the 1860s, so it's possible that your Batemans lived at the address for a short time, or that they were not principle householders e.g. Jane was staying with friends, so not her actual home address. In case any of the names ring bells ... in 1863 the householder at No. 7 is Emanuel H. Orpen esq., and in 1868 a Commander R.B. Harvey, R.N.

Sometimes people used an address in a parish to qualify for a marriage under residence rules.

John's father Rowland Bateman died 1803 and the burial records states "of Merrion Square", and John's birth place is given as Dublin on the 1851 England census (born 1792); also Jane's abode at the time of her marriage in 1865 is given as "7 Peafield Terrace, Merrion Ave, Black Rock Dublin". I don't know if this was the family home but it is the only actual address I have.

Hi Colette, Thank you for your reply and help! Arabella Bateman (nee Denny) was John Bateman's mother and so grandmother to Elizabeth, Annie and Jane. I have also found the baptism of Rowland Bateman in 1826 at Tralee, co. Kerry, who was the son and heir of John Bateman, and presumably the brother (or half-brother) of Elizabeth, Annie and Jane. My brick wall is to find the birth/baptism records for the three sisters so I can (hopefully) determine who was their mother.

Thank you for the information! I've looked at the Bateman entries that I have found at www.irishgenealogy.ie but none appear to be the ones I'm looking for. I'm looking for birth/baptism records for Elizabeth, Annie Isabella and Jane Bateman, presumed daughters of John Bateman, Esq. of Oak Park, Tralee, Kerry who also resided at Merrion Ave, Black Rock, Dublin. I've drawn a blank with Kerry records so far, and wondered if they might have been baptized in Booterstown. Elizabeth was born about 1824 and was likely the eldest daughter. Jane was the youngest daughter. All three sisters married in Booterstown; Elizabeth in 1845, Annie in 1863 and Jane in 1865. A more detailed query is at http://boards.ancestry.ca/localities.britisles.ireland.ker.g...

Forgive me for being dense, but could you clarify to which index you refer as "The free index...."? I assume you mean the one mentioned above, but I'm not sure that I'm correct in that assumption.

The free index is showing a small number (abt 6) of Bateman baptisms in South Co. Dublin, including two in Booterstown CofI parish - a Bridget in 1840, and a Frederick in 1890.

The free IrishGenealogy website also includes some CofI Bateman entries, including the death/burial of a William Bateman in Irishtown parish which is quite close to Booterstown.

From 1845 Church of Ireland marriage records would look the same as the civil records - the same register was used.

Baptism and marriage records for the parish go back to 1824, and like most historic Church of Ireland parish records are held in the Representative Church Body Library in Co. Dublin.

Transcripts of the records may be available online on a pay website - e.g. RootsIreland

Dear Collette,
Thank you so much. Will read through all this and get back to you .I am living in the original house Martin came from and all I had to go on really were some scraps written fifty years ago by my husbands aunt, and Martin and Kate's memorial cards.MY husband Padraic's mother and father were both Kilduff, and the information that has come to light would make a good historical novel , plenty of romance, but like all Irish families , a great deal of loss and sadness too.

Thanking you ,
Sandra.

Wife Catherine + 4 children are with him in 1911.

Martin is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.

Don't know if you have their marriage details, but if not, here they are:

Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958
Name: Martin Kilduff
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1902
Registration District: Dublin South
Volume: 2
Page Number: 658
FHL Film Number:101260
Same for KATIE DALTON, so a match.

You may already know that this cert can be ordered through gro.ireland.

As a matter of interest, Martin seems to have been a baptism sponsor for a Clarken child (of Townsend Street) in 1894 (see irishgenealogy.ie), so was obviously in Dublin from at least that time.

(As an aside - 2 of my best friends - one from Moore, the other whose family originated from Creggaun, Galway!)

There are Kilduff's here http://www.dublinheritage.ie/electoral/index.php

This might be Edward's marriage details (same details for a MAURA JOYCE, so possibly a match):

Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958

Name: Edward Kilduff
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1935
Registration District: Dublin North
Volume: 2
Page Number: 301
FHL Film Number: 101577

A marriage for DELIA Kilduff - same for WILLIAM SMART, so a possible match:

Name: Delia Kilduff
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1939
Registration District: Dublin North
Volume: 2
Page Number:420
FHL Film Number: 101578

Marriage for ANNE MARIA KILDUFF (probably Nan)- same for ANDREW FITZPATRICK, so possible match:

Name: Anna Maria Kilduff
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1927
Registration District: Dublin South
Volume:2
Page Number: 454
FHL Film Number:101576

Hope this info helps, but if you need further info, just email again!

Happy hunting.
Colette x

Hi
No relation, but the O'Leary family that lived at Roches Buildings in Cork in both 1901 & 1911 had only 2 children - John & Julia.
Daniel was a mineral water salesman, and Ellen was a wife/housekeeper. They were married 18 years in 1911, so married c.1893. Do you have their marriage cert? If so, you will have their fathers' names, and may be able to find their families on the censuses too.
If Daniel and Ellen had siblings, you may be able to trace them through those siblings.
Good luck!

They left Dublin sometime after 1908 and came to Montreal, Canada where they had a daughter Annie. By the time they came to Canada, they had changed their last name to Silcoff (spelled Selkoff by the Canadians due to the accent no doubt).
Shane, you are amazing!!!

Thank you so much for your help in trying to track down my gggrandmother's death record and the other cemetery info. as well.. I've just reached out to a second cousin to try to see if it could in fact be the Wexford one. It could be possible as his grandmother was born in Wexford so these do match.

If all else fails, I will order ALL the possible certificates. :) I'm that determined in my searching.

As far as I've been able to tell, they were quite poor so really doubt anything would have been printed in newpapers etc.

I really stuck gold in my searching by ordering just one record from Glasnevin a while back which was fantastic as it had 5 family members in the same grave. Was kind of hoping for the same with my gggrandmother but couldn't find her or the others there. I'll be ordering the death certificates of all the others in trying to see where these ones could be buried.

I'll be sure to post my results on here.

Kind regards,
Wendy

There are just 5 reasonable matches for Margaret's death on the BMD Index on FamilySearch between 1901 and 1911, and just one in Dublin North district which covers Clontarf, and this is in the first quarter of 1908. The age / year of birth doesn't quite match up (1839 vs est. of 1826 from 1901 census), which is not unusual, as this detail is reported by the informant who may not have accurate details.

Three of the others possible deaths are in counties Wicklow and Wexford, all with 1830s estimated years of birth. The last match showing up is the best match by age - a death around the time of the 1911 census in Monaghan district of a Margaret Gregory age 84, so est. born c1827

I would look for death first to establish dates, and then work from there (for those that died after 1864). If the family were reasonably well off they may have had a death notice placed in a newspaper, and knowing the date would help focus a search. A death notice may give the name of the church and cemetery used.

Very few RC parishes kept death/burial records, and if the cemetery used was a shared Church of Ireland one then it's unlikely that any RC burial would be noted in their registers.

There's a list of Dublin City & County graveyards on the Dublin City Library website - see : http://dublinheritage.ie/graveyards/
