Trying to find the origin of my Carten family. Here are the details. Patrick Carten(1824-1870) born circa 1824 in Ireland emmigrated to NYC in 1850. He married Margaret Dowdell(1822-1904) and had 5 children Thomas (1849-1868), Mary (1855-1889), Julia(1854-1908), James (1855-1886) and John (1862-1880). All children were born in NYC except for Thomas. Patrick worked as a blacksmith and grocer. Most of the family died of tuberculosis(4)early. Margaret and Julia continued to live in NCY until their deaths in the early 1900. James Carten marred Margaret Conway in 1885 and had one child James prior to James' death in 1886. After James' death, Margaret took her son James and raised him in Jersey city. James later married Margaret Tremble in 1914 and had six children. The family name has been passed done be a single male for 3 generations. I think the family may have come from either Dublin or Country Louth, but I am not sure. In addition, I don't know if Patrick had any borthers or sisters. If anyone has
any information on this family I would love to hear from you.
