Re: GAVAN /GAVIN Ballina,Newport,Clew bay.
Ray,
I assume by now you have finished writing your family history. What's the latest. I've been trying through various web resources, including the LDS(Mormons). Although I have both my parent's birth certificates, both born in Dublin, (James from James and Mary (Dunne) 1900) and (Eileen from Edward Walsh and Mary Jane (McDermot) 1909) - I don't seem to be able to get a dicky bird on any of them. The obvious starting point would be the 1901 Irish Census - specifically Dublin - then who knows, probably back to the West Coast - but I don't know where.
Browsing the sites one said that the name Gavan was 'rare' - more often spelled Gavin. Seems it shouldn't be such a hassle if us 'Gavan's' are rare <G>. Some of this web stuff is so vague until you pay bucks up front. I got reference to a James Gavan in some Middlesex index. I *know* without looking - it has to be my own marriage !!!!

Re: GAVAN /GAVIN Ballina,Newport,Clew bay.
My grandfather Charles was born in Ireland, but I do not know where. His Father was, George born 1853 married to Catherine O Neill born1858. They both died in Scotland. George's Father was William married to Rose Lafferty. We think they came from the North, but can find no trace. Re Gavins in Kildare, there was a family, in Maddenstown, which I think may have died out. The records would be in St. Brigids R C Church, Suncroft, Curragh Camp.

Hi Mary, Found your posting via a Philly contact who is researching Sarsfields. This may be 'old hat' to you but this is what she mailed me, between the stars: *************** RE: Gavan/Gavin Ballina, Newport Chew Bay My Maternal Grandmother was Bridget Mary Agnes Gavin b Ballina, Co Mayo to Patrick Gavin and Bridget Scaddlier (sp?). Immigrated to Phila and married Edward Sarsfield in 1889 d about 1912 Phila.
They were on that list I sent to you and they married 1888. Ask the poster if they have the marriage application. If not, the # is 29207. You can also advise her that there are two ways to get marriage application. If she goes to Phila City Archives there is a blue book at the desk first check year # then verify certificate # with reel, if she copies herself it will cost maybe 75 cents. If she goes to City Hall it would cost $20.00, but if she mails for it Marriage Bureau, City Hall Room 415, Phila., PA 19107. 2 separate checks, one for $20.00 and one for $15.00, each made out to the City of Philadelphia. If she could provide you with the information about Edward Sarsfield, there might be some help for her. Just a thought. ************************ I am engaged in researching Sarsfields worldwide and together with a Sarsfield collaborator have a substantial database of names and families originating in Ireland prior to 1900. If I can be of help, just mail me direct. Regards, Brian F. Sarsfield

Ray,
Did you ever get your book on to the Web? If so, can you direct me on how to find it.
Thanks,
