Hood is a well known name in the Larne and Islandmagee area. One family ran the early ferry between the two places - Hood's ferry. An early James Hood and family,of Larne, wife Elizabeth and children James, Jane, Ellen and Margaret sailed from Belfast in 1850 arriving in New York July 16th. An even earlier James and wife Mary arrived by sea in Charlestown, S. Carolina Oct. 26, 1772. James and John Hood were listed in Larne in Griffith's and Loughmore graveyard just outside Carrickfergus has a Hood gravestone for the children of John Hood who died in the 1870's.
