Re: John Wakefield listed as one of the "Forty Nine" officers granted land-Cromwell's army

Ann,
thanks for the information. I ran across some listings at this website: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/history/cromwell_se... At this site is info for the survey done in Clare County and settlement-including listings for those who gave up lands to whom. And like I have found in my research there are listings for land held in trust for the '49 Officers for the '49 arrears. I wondered if any other county had put this online like Clare. It is also my undersanding for the 1649 Officers-Protestant Royalist against Cromwellian ideology-that it wss the Restoration Acts-under Charles II, I believe the act was in 1660 after he was restored that he recognized those who remained Loyal. I have found the British Calendars of State Papers concerning Ireland at openlibrary. The Public Records for Ireland were burnt so I assumed like for America-a colony at that time like Ireland-papers would be there. And they are. It is just going through all the Calendars and records at the National Archives in London. Thanks Cindy

The Books of survey and distribution show who were granted land after the Cromwellian wars- however they are not on line as far as I know. They are available in the National Library Dublin See this article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Books_of_survey_and_distributio...
Also
http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/down-survey-maps.php
annclare

British Raj/ Anglo-Indian food

Hello,

I'm interested in making contact with others who have a family connection with the British Raj and have inherited family recipes from that period.

My grandfather was born in Ahmedabad, and through him we have inherited numerous recipes that we enjoy to this day.

We are all familiar with Indian dishes that have been anglicised in the UK in modern times(Chicken Tikka Massala etc.), however, I am fascinated by the recipes that emerged during that earlier phase of anglo-Indian contact on the sub-continent.

The fusion of Indian and British tastes led to the creation of a unique style of cooking that does not seem to be formerly documented anywhere. However, I am sure it is still enjoyed by families across the world and passed down from generation to generation.

My ultimate aim is to document these recipes (with appropriate attribution) before they are lost. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has recipes to share and would like to participate.

Thanks very much (and apologies if this is unacceptably O/T!)

John Wakefield listed as one of the "Forty Nine" officers granted land-Cromwell's army

From a listing in John O'Hart's "The Irish landed gentry when Cromwell came to Ireland" on page 372 begins a listing of the officers-on page 409 John Wakefield is listed. These officers are according to the book "Cromwell in Ireland, a history of Cromwell's Irish Campaign" by Denis Murphy pages 211-259-service June 1644-June 5, 1649-thus the name-"when the King (Charles II?) I assume Charles I was executed-returned from exile and with him came many officers who had been driven out of Ireland by Cromwell for their loyality-Protestant Royalist officers who had served the King before June 5, 1649 or the 49 Officers. By the Act of Settlement they were granted the lands that had been assigned by the Commonwealth for the '49 Arrears-an Act of Indemnity was passed 7th June 1654-on behalf of these officers-for their arrears they were granted land in Ireland. Are there any records in the British Empire for these officers? And were they were settled? Thanks, coetting57@hotmail.com

St. Helena became a Crown Colony in 1834. This would have put it under the jurisdiction of the Colonial Office. The Colonial Office was merged with the Foreign Office, about 1960s I think, and became the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. They have recently dissolved the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Library which held all the records and dispersed their collections to several locations. However they have a residual unit which would probably point you in the right direction. In addition there is a full list of what went where - so google up Foreign and Commonwealth Office Library, lots of information. Think this would be your best bet.

I dont know enough to properly answer your question. I posted to try to find my ancestors.
Perhaps that is the wrong place to inquire, but I dont know that.
My line 12 generations ago entered this country in 1678 when Robert and his son Benjamin Duffield landed in America from the Port of Hull, England.
This family had considerable ties with the founding fathers of our nation, especially Benjamin Franklin.
I would like to research this line back from Robert Duffield.
I understand his father was John Duffield, married to Johanna Lerrock, John born in 1590 died 1615, but I am not certain this is correct.

If she married in India she would obviously travel under her married name which is unknown - that is the problem. I would suggest trying the India Office Library - google them up, hey have a section especially devoted to family history during the time of the British Raj and are very helpful.

Just out of curiousity again I looked under your Home Children link - very interesting and obviously gives many tips for further searching. However it does prove me wrong in one point, although I have to admit I am a bit surprised, older "children" were included as what is probably your Harold arrived on the Corsican in 1911 aged 18. Do hope you get to the bottom of this. Good luck.

If you do a Google search under "Home Children (1869-1930)"
you will find Harold with about 6 others who were sent in the batch.. There are two other Brinds one from Barnado Homes and one from Feagan Homes... They are so young.. very sad.
I have a birth cert. I did find an entry on a Canadian site a while back which sort of indicated that there were a couple of other youngsters in the group. My computer crashed at some point and although I do backups, it seems not regularly enough so although I do have the memory, I have not found the record again.. I have had other things going on, I'm afraid.

Back yet again! I was looking on the Berkshire Board for my own ends and there is somewhere there under user name tonyahaney who is looking for Harold Edwad Brind and another person has said there is a birth entry for 1894 which I must have missed, but the birth is in Wallingford. As said, the Berkshire Bolard could be a better bet.

May I ask what record you have of his birth? Just out of curiousity I looked in the Free BMD and as this is not a common name there are only a few entries and there does not seem to be any record of birth for a Harold Edward Brind in, or around, 1894. If the birth date is wrong it could make all the difference to any lines you chase up.

Had almost forgotten this! I think there are two points which need serious consideration. Whatever the "family tradition", being given the choice of "Prison or Canada" is impossible. Canada was never used as a penal colony. Until the American Revolution, the US states were used as penal colonies but all that came to an end when GB recognised US independence. Australia was then used, from c. 1792 to 1868 when the system ended but it had been declining in use for some years before that. In the later 19th and well into the 20th century, there were schemes to send homeless, orphaned or abandoned children to the colonies to give them a new start in life, a better deal than roaming the streets of 19th century industrial cities. I think the original idea was basically good but unfortunately it was catastrophic for many. Farmers were perhaps the worst, they offered the children a new "home" which turned out to be nothing but a chance to get cheap labour. Many were sent to schools where they were supposed to be educated and trained for their new lives but again were seriously exploited. Some of the religious institutions were the worst offenders here. If you look under Orphans and Orphanages you will find there is a specific Board for British Home Children. However I think you will find another problem with this approach. Your Harold would have been 16, possibly 17, when he went to Canada so he would not have been a "child" or in any sort of institution. In 1911 the school-leaving age was 12 when a child could get a "Labour Certificate" saying they had reached a minimum level of basic education. A few stayed a bit longer, it depended on circumstances but he would not have been sent in any group of "children". My best guess is that there is a family story behind this - perhaps he misbehaved in some way and the family sent him to Canada to save face, or he fell out with his family and just went and someone did not want to broadcast the details to all and sundry. In this case there would be no "records" apart from his passage and immigration application. I still think you would be more likely to get help if you post on the Wiltshire Board and, as you say he was born in Berkshire, the Berkshire Board. There may be someone who recognises the name - even searching the same family. I do not think that is very likely on this Board but hope what I have said helps a bit.

The Harold Edward Brind that went to Quebec via Liverpool is the correct one. He was born in 1894, Brightwell, Berkshire. His father Thomas is from Aldbourne,Wiltshire and further back. The story about the stolen horse is family tradition.. Either go to prison or Canada... It seems at that time a lot of children from homes/orphanages etc were sent to the colonies.. I also saw about a year or so ago that the British govt apologised as a lot of the children were mistreated.. It would be handy to know how to find the official records of why he was sent away as he was not an orphan.

The last Empress of Austria, Elizabeth, was always known as "Sissi") who maried a Frenchman. Baptiste is very French, was this a descendent of the French connection and not your person just dropping the name? I think the National Army Museum could help pinpoint if he was ever in the army - or if not at least you would know that for sure. Good luck.

On the marriage cert Guy's father is listed as an engineer and retired.
The death record I have is correct as it gives Guy's birth date and my mum has confirmed it is his, also the last known place he lived was Nottingham, i have also found a 2nd marraige record for Guy to Elizabeth Byrne.
I did not see the marriage of Ralph William Payne i will look into that and see what I can find.
I have used the national archives and british India sites, there is nothing, so I'm begining to question if family info on Walter Arnold Payne being in the army is incorrect, perhaps(as suggested by another poster) walter may have worked in dumdum making something for the army.
Out of desperation i googled " walter Arnold Payne" this lead me to a record on another site, I have contacted the owner she said Walter Arnold Payne Baptiste was baptised in calcuta India in 1885. Im also thinking if this is him perhaps he dropped the baptist at some point.
Thank you all for your help and suggestions,

Hi
Well you certainly seem to have a problem with the Payne family. I have been looking for anything to help but it is always exceedingly difficult when you have very little info to go on.
However, I did find a marriage for
Ralph William Payne and Norah Elizabeth Young, 11 Feb 1929 in Calcutta, Bengal, India. The father of the groom is given as Arnold Walter Payne. You may already have found it but if not it is in familysearch.org.

You said you have Guy's marriage cert, does it mention if the father is deceased? Does any family member know if Walter was born in UK? Do you have any old pics with notes on the back?
I cannot find the death cert for Guy in 2006, do you know for certain it was Nottingham. As I live in Derbyshire it would be interesting to know where exactly he died. Was Sissy short for another name and did she marry in UK or abroad? If you can come up with any other details it will help.
hi thanks for the reply, this is everything I have so far Guy Aubrey Payne was born in India 1/11/1931 he died 2006 in nottingham. My mother tells me Guys father was a warrant officer in the Britsh Army and that he married an Indian girl. Family tell me Guy had much older siblings one of who was Sissy, sissy married a french man and had son named Patrice.
On the wedding cert his occupation is an engineer ( retired )A witness to the marriage was a G R Payne. Guys Address was 1 Lancaster Road E7, I have the G R payne registered at the same address ( telephone ) in the 1960's. So i would assume this was Guy's mother.
Any help or suggestions would be really appreciated

Any children born after 1837 would probably have birth certificates, these would give the mother's name. Obviously a marriage would have to be in Parish Registers not civil BMD but if you get the earliest BC possible it might be that you could find a marriage in a church register at the same place, or as he seems to have been around Lancashire you could just search that area, or the area in Scotland where you know the children were born.

Thank you so much for your response.
I have Googled Gibraltar Records for Richard Cressey (who was born 1803 I believe) - but am not finding any record of him at all. English Censuses do, nevertheless, say that he was born on Gibraltar. Neither can I find any wife.
His five children were all born in Scotland and/or England between 1834 and 1853.
It all seems something of a (frustrating !) mystery.
Helen
