I always approach Wikipedia with caution but that is not to say it is totally useless. Google George Frederick Koehler and see what they say. He was born in Woolwich, his father was a British Officer but born in Germany. Some of the references might take you further. Hope this helps.

Searching London Gazette online archives with 'Koehler' down to 1810 produces nine hits from 1788 to 1802, all of which seem to pertain to this man.

I claim no expertise in military records but suspect that when an officer purchased his first commission, possibly a parent stood guarantor or similar for him? If so, then military records might confirm at least one parent.

Various late eighteenth century periodicals (Gentlemans Magazine, etc) are now online and searchable full-text. In view of this man's social class, such periodicals might contain useful items.
