Fanny Parkes: authoress of Wanderings of a Pilgrim in search of the picturesue

Hi All,

I am based out of Lucknow, India and recently I came across the house where Fanny Parkes lived in Kanpur, then known as Cawnpore. The house is currently the official residence of the District Magistrate and just has a plaque which states that Fanny Parkes stayed there from 1831-1833.

I am interested in finding out more about her so that I can put up a proposal for having a mini- museum of her life and work.

Should anyone know more about her life and times, request you to write to me at: am8alika@gmail.com.
Many Thanks!

Hi There,

Thanks much!
I already had these info.

What I am looking for is of her life before she came to India and after she returned from here.
Apparently, she still maintained a daily journal. Do let me know where I can look up on these.

As her husband was an East India Company employee there would be some records from them. Try India Office Library which is now at the British Library which also has the EIC records. There is also an organisation called Families in British India (FIBIS) which could be helpful. Also worth googling Fanny Parkes - quite a few links albeit with the usual caveat about Wikipedia. It mentions other books which are available from Amazon. Hope this is useful.
