Hello carole_anne48,

I notice this post is a year old (well nearly), but thought I would add something.

I think you may have to go through National Archives for this information, but not 100% on this. However, I suggest you take a look at their site or if in UK you ring them and they can guide you.

Don't hold you breath though, my grandfather was with the British Embassy in Moscow and no they cannot give you that information or won't for some reason and refer you to everyone and anyone. I too have full information on my family member, but it is of little support.

I have spent hours and hours and all that goes with getting translations from English to Russian and in the end Moscow Archives turned out to be brilliant in their help. Waiting currently for the marriage certificate from Russia. It does not match anything like those of the UK, but gives a lot of information.

You could try the Italian Archives if they exist or on genes site they have an area for overseas marriages. If you care to respond with some details, I will be happy to have a look although Ancestry may have these too.

Good luck,

I have come across a similar situation where a British serviceman (who was still in the Army) married a German woman in Germany a few years after WW2 ended. The marriage was registered in Germany only, and not in the registered in Britain. The wife was issued a British passport based on the German marriage certificate being produced in the application.

I have come across births abroad being registered with British Consuls in the early twentieth century and hence British birth certificates being issued. However I have not encountered marriages being registered with British Consuls - but it is possible that a marriage might be registered in the same way as a birth - I simply do not know, I'm afraid.

I can't see why it would have been registered in The UK. The Italian spouse would have likely been issued citizenship upon production of the Italian marriage certificate. To my knowledge, providing the marriage certificate is from a country that The UK recognises, if a non-British person marries a British national, then they can ascertain citizenship providing they are granted a visa. The marriage does not need to be "registered" in The UK, just proven. Also, The Military records for British subject events abroad are not mucked in with British records, it's a separate database.
