Hi Bryan,
That's also what I found that there is no Wilfred Stephens period that's associated with Yorkshire except for a Wilford Stephens in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1850(?) but he died a year later...
Apparently it is word of mouth...and I'm hoping he's not another family member who wanted to run and dissapear from his family and said he was from somewhere he's not...
I did find for a Wilfred Stephens Regiment Royal Engineer a discharge in Chelsea on the 22 March 1879 which was purchased and his rank being corporal having served 9 years and 100 days. This makes him joining the Regiment in 1870, would he still be considered a sapper a year later? Is a sapper like an apprentice?
Whether he was here personally I don't know to do the discharge or did it from Fiji if this is our Wilfred Stephens. Unfortunately no other information was detailed such as dob or next of kin.
Thanks for the link of the UK Counties...it will help in other areas of my family tree also!
Your a godsend and with the name Bryan of course...lol, this is my father, Bryan's tree I'm doing...lol
