SNOOK / SNOOKS Wiltshire to Nova Scotia

Hoping this might look familiar to someone. I have two Snooks that died in Nova Scotia and were born in Wiltshire. Suspect that they may be brothers and immigrated to Canada together.

Henry SNOOKS born c1795 Wiltshire died 1877 Halifax County, Nova Scotia. Occupation was farmer and he may have immigrated between 1837 and 1845. His first child (that I am aware of) was born in Nova Scotia during 1846. His wife is 'of Irish descent' and suspect he married after immigrating.

Hugh SNOOKS born c1805 Wiltshire died 1875 Colchester County, Nova Scotia. He possibly married twice, firstly to Elizabeth ? and after her death to Amelia Parker.

Oddly, on both death registrations the names of their mother and father were not completed. Both men are listed as born in Wiltshire, England.

I can find neither in the 1841 England census. To date I cannot find either on any passenger lists.

If these two gentlemen look even remotely familiar I would appreciate hearing from you.

Best regards,

hlv

Hi all,

We recently discovered in my great-grandfather's military records that he may have fathered a child in Salisbury, UK, during the first world war whilst posted there from Australia - there was a letter in there from the mother.

I think the child may have been Ralph Edward Hart of Salisbury, born 1917 - the birthday and place of birth lines up with that in the letter from the mother - he died in 2002. The mother's name was Mary, but that is all I know.

Does anyone know any more about the Harts in wiltshire during this period as we would love to know if our family is bigger than we thought!

cheers,
marc
Ephraim DICKS b. ab.t 1781 Wiltshire , died in South Africa in 1820

Ephraim Dicks was one of the Ford party that sailed to South Africa on the Weymouth in 1820. He came from Wiltshire, possibly from Deverill Longbridge near Warminster. He was a widower with two sons, Ephraim born 1804, and Joseph Benjamin born 1815. There were two other Dicks families: James aged 23 (wife Dinah and their son, John) and James born in 1782; died 1863; married Jane born 1781 died 1820. They had Uriah; James (Edward Ford); Joseph; Eliza; Robert Harris;(all born in England) It is probable that this James Dicks "adopted" the orphaned Joseph Benjamin. Joseph married Maria Ford. I am trying to trace my English ancestry and appreciate any help

Bradford, Wiltshire

As I am a trifle foggy on my English geography, maybe someone can sort me out. I found a Bradford, Wiltshire and also a Bradford, North Petherton, Somerset. The thing that has me puzzled is the fact that there is a William Goodman in Somerset from 1841 to 1861 and a William Goodman in Wiltshire from 1871 to 1901. Both of them are about the same age. I cannot find the Somerset fellow after 1861 and the Wiltshire fellow before 1871. I have searched up, down and sideways. Please help. Mardell

James DALLIMORE family of Wiltshire

I am looking for information concerning James Dallimore born about 1800 of Trowridge, Wiltshire. He married Lydia Bailey abt. 1821 in Wiltshire. They remained in Trowbridge until death. All census records show his occupation to be Woolspinner. I have been able to obtain death information on both James and Lydia, but have been unable to obtain any information of their births or marriage. They had a daughter named Sarah born about 1822, I am also looking for birth information on. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to check for the marriage in Devizes, hopefully this might give me Sarah’s surname.

I intend visiting Devizes and Timsbury in the next couple of months, can anybody suggest where I can view the OPRs for each of these towns. Also any other information that would help me further my research of my ancestors.

Thank You
Tom
Hi Board,

Back in 2005 I started my family history research after the death of my father. The initial research into my Fry ancestors aimed me in the direction of Chippenham where they were born.

I posted on this board back in 2005 and with the help of Dorothy, Robin and a few others I managed to piece together an important part of my family's past.

Two years later and I have a far greater understanding of my Wiltshire roots so I'm posting again in the hope that I can expand this further.

Back in c.1842 Edwin Albert Fry was born in Chippenham, Wiltshire. Three years later in c.1845 James Augustus Fry was also born in Chippenham. I believe, but without hard evidence, that these were brothers.

The 1881 census shows both Edwin and James in Kingston upon Hull as army pensioners. Both are married and James appears to be living with Edwin and is shown as Edwin's relative on the census.

Also showing as a relative of Edwin on the 1881 census is a Kate Fry, aged 4, born Chippenham, Wiltshire. She does not appear on any future records I have seen. Without evidence, my thinking is that Kate is James's daughter and that she possibly died before the 1891 census was taken.

James married Mary Ann Weare in Chippenham in 1873. Mary appears to have remained in Chippenham when James moved to Hull but is shown with James in Hull on the 1891 census.

I am one of many Fry's born and bred in Kingston upon Hull who are descended from James. I'm sure there's quite a few I'm yet to discover who are related to Edwin.

It would be great to hear from any other researchers who have links or information on James Augustus Fry, Edwin Albert Fry, Kate Fry or Mary Ann Weare from the Chippenham, Wiltshire area.

Thanks,

Jon Fry

Manor of Blakareswell in Whiteparish abt 1306

I found this reference in a footnote:

At an inq. post mort. taken 5 October, 34 Edward I., it was found that William de Nevill, &c, was seised of the manor of 'Blakareswell in Whyteparisch,' com. Wiltshire, which is evidently Bleacher's well. (Cal. Genealog., vol ii. p. 731)

I have found Whiteparish on the A27, and I assume this is the same place.
Further browsing ( http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/community/getcom.php?id=242 ) has led me to a farm called Blaxwell, with a reference to it being called Blackswell in 1242.

Is there anyone with local knowledge, that can give an opinion on whether Blakareswell was an alternative name/spelling for Blaxwell/Blackswell or another nearby place? Any other records?
Equally, does anyone know of bleaching or other cloth processing going on in the area pre-1600? I am assuming that this is the type of bleaching that was going on.

HARDING from Hindon, Wiltshire - can you help sort this lot out?

Hello,

I thought I would post details of my HARDING family in the hope that someone may have a link, or be able to help me get further back…

James HARDING was born abt 1800 in Hindon, Wilts (according to census returns) and there is a christening 01 Mar 1800 at Hindon, son of James and Ann HARDING, which looks good.

He can be found in 1841, 1851 and 1861 in London working as a Tailor. He died between 1861 and 1871.
1841: HO107/689/8; Folio: 28; Page: 1;
1851: HO107/1517; Folio: 237; Page: 1; Schedule: 7;
1861: RG9/193; Folio: 79; Page: 11; Schedule: 56; (misrecorded as Rearding)

My problem has been working back from his birth in 1800…

There is a marriage for James HARDING and Ann DAY on the 25 Dec 1798 at Fonthill Gifford, Wiltshire. This seems likely to be his parents as this is the neighbouring parish.

There are also other children of James and Ann, christened at Hindon:

14 Oct 1810, Richard s. James and Ann
22 Dec 1812, Francis s. James and Ann
08 Dec 1814, Ann d. James (a tailor) and Ann
03 Jun 1816, Stephen s. James (a tailor) and Ann
28 Jan 1821, Priscilla d. James (a tailor) and Ann

However there is a 10-year gap between the birth of James in 1800 and Richard in 1810, which seems unlikely. I guess they could have moved to a different parish? Or are there nonconformist records for Hindon.

Looking on the census, I think this is James and Ann in 1841 and 1851, based on occupation and place of birth. This would however make James rather young to be married in 1798…have I got two different families muddled up?

1841: HO107/1173/3; Folio: 38; Page: 8;
1851: HO107/1843; Folio: 331; Page: 9; Schedule: 31;

Another problem is that the family on the census has a daughter Mary b1814 which doesn’t tie up with the christening for Ann. I don’t have access to Hindon parish registers and so perhaps someone who does could look and see if there is a Mary in 1814.

Based on the census, James HARDING should be born abt 1784 in Hindon and Ann DAY in 1779, can someone see if they are recorded in the Hindon registers?

I have checked the census and there are other HARDINGs born in Hindon in the 1770s/1780s which I imagine will link in as well:

Thomas (abt 1775)
Francis (abt 1780)
William (abt 1788)

Thanks in advance for any help,
Greg
John Stephen SNELGROVE married Ann DOUGHTY, Deverill-Longbridge

My ancestestors came to Northumberland County, Hamilton Township, Ontario, Canada in the 1850's and were orginally from Deverill-Longbridge, Wiltshire. I really do not know alot about the family in England and was wondering if anyone else may be researching these names. Stephen Snelgrove married to Ann? was born in Deverill-Longbridge about 1790. He had a brother named Edward who (born 1787) who remained in Longbridge & was buried there in 1835. There was also an aunt of Stephen & Edward's buried there named Sarah Snelgrove (born 1754) & died 1844. Stephen & Ann ? (born about 1791, Heytesbury Wiltshire) had the following children: Andrew, George, Sarah Anne, Sarah, John & William. I have been able to obtain their christening information. Son, John Stephen Snelgrove (born August 1820) married Ann Doughty (born 1826). In the 1851 census John & Ann do not seem to have been married as yet because John is shown living with his parents & siblings. I do not know who Ann's parents are. My grandfather was named after his grandmother...his name was Ellis Doughty Snelgrove (I am not sure if the Ellis name means anything or not). Any additional information on these families would be very much appreciated! Thank you in advance, Cindy Smith
