Just spotted this message now, Lesley, and I think we may have a connection somewhere.

My 4xgreat grandfather Joseph Hurst (b. 1792 Ormskirk) was the son of John Hurst (b.1772 Ormskirk) and Elizabeth Owen, who also had a daughter Alice Hurst. Alice married James Heslip, a butcher and their daughter was the Margaret you mentioned - although the church records at Ormskirk suggest that Margaret was born Margaret Hurst before her mother's marriage and took the name Heslip afterwards.

I have heard that there is supposedly a connection to the De Prestons, but I have not managed to confirm it yet. I do know, however, that Alice Hurst's father John Hurst was the son of Joseph Hurst (a shoemaker) and Margaret Preston but as yet I haven't found out much about Margaret at all. If there is a link, I think it will be in that section of the tree.

Diane, I've now found the will of Robert Hutchinson of Applethwaite, yeoman, dated 24.4.1820, Ref. R 515/120 No.7 at Lancashire Record Office, Preston, which mentions James.

Robert leaves Common to his son William, supervisor at Newark, Nottinghamshire, who is to pay out sums of £100 to each of his brothers and sisters from the estate. His sons Robert And Isaac are to have all his personal effects; son William is to receive £50; sons James, Christopher, George and daughters Margaret, Agnes and Mary to receive £10; £5 a year is to be paid to his sister Agnes, and the will also mentions his sister Ann's children.

Also, I made a mistake - the land tax was 1831, bit 1829.
Hi Pauline,
That sounds wonderful. I have so far written several draft chapters. I have recently spent a lot of time in the Records Office in Kendal transcribing documents re Easter dues and the poor amongst other things. It is surprising that no comprehensive history of Bowness has, to my knowledge, ever been written, even though it is such a magnet for visitors and is also the only major settlement in Lakeland that is actually adjacent to a lake.
John

John, I have a lot of information about Bowness and Undermillbeck, and am contacting you separately. I have a database of virtually all the residents of Applethwaite and Undermillbeck, with information about their families and where they lived, in 1671, and I can trace many of them through to the census of 1841. I'm currently trying to extend the database to include everything I can find from original records about the inhabitants up to that date - quite a big job! But I am willing to help anyone if I can.

I think John may be right. The vill was a medieval unit of administration which would have been larger than the later area of Stricklandkettle. Angus Winchester is the authority on this - he wrote an article in the 1978 Transactions of the CWAAS about vills in West Cumbria. I think he has also written about Stricklandketel but I can't give you the reference.

Thomas Machell mentions Thornbarrow Hall in Undermillbeck in 'Antiquary on Horseback', written in the late 17th century:
'There is also a tenement which does suit at (Windermere manor) court called Thornbarrow Hall. It pays quit rent and greenhew to the King and five shillings per annum rent to Lord Wharton of Wharton Hall. This has belonged to, and been built by, the Thornbarrows - whence it is that we have their names, arms and pictures in the church windows'. (Windermere Parish Church at Bowness).
I think the Thornbarrows had probably gone a long time before, as no person or property of that name appears in the parish registers certainly after 1640. It is still there, if you google the name.

Re: HUTCHINSON ... Kendal or Windomore/Windermere? Westmorland

A few things about the area your Hutchinsons came from which might help.

Windermere was called Applethwaite until the 19th C., so to find strays - people who were born there but living somewhere else - in the census you need to look up both. There were a group of Hutchinsons - Nathan, James and Robert living there in the late 18th C, and they all had a number of children, though I couldn't tell you who they all were. James lived at Common, a farmhouse which still exists just off the road between Windermere and Staveley. There was also a William, who lived at Winster and Crook, which roughly speaking are between Bowness/Windermere and Staveley.

The Hutchinsons disappear from Windermere in the early 19th C, but in 1851 most of their descendants live very close by, and in 1851 two of them, Nathan and Isaac, are farming at Staveley.

Windermere Parish Church is in Bowness beside the lake, and the parish includes Bowness (formerly Undermillbeck) and Windermere (formerly Applethwaite). All the other places are in the vast parish of Kendal, which had a large number of chapels of ease including Staveley and Crook. The IGI usually puts all entries under Kendal, so you can't tell whether people lived in the town of Kendal or one of the outlying districts, but the chapels actually kept their own registers. The chapel registers are often quite small so it's easy to find someone, though some were so small they did not always have a priest, so families might use a neighbouring one. The records of Windermere and Kendal parishes are on microfilm at Kendal Record Office.

I have a lot of records for Windermere but not Staveley. If I find anything that might be useful to you I'll let you know.

I have done a bit more research. If you go to www.edenlinks.co.uk and look at the pages on the villages in Kendal ward you can find out a lot about the area, including the 1777 Window Tax. There were six Hutchinsons in the townships outside Kendal, all near Staveley, but none in Windermere itself. However, two, Robert and William, lived at Hugill, which is on the road between Windermere and Staveley, and close to Common Farm, where a Hutchinson family lived later. Then Nathan, Robert and James all appear in the Windermere parish registers in the 1780s/90s, and also William, although he lives at Winster and Crook.

I think they were related because the name Nathan and also Isaac appear in so many Hutchinson families in the area and also in Wales. Nathan and Elizabeth Hutchinson lived at Borrans in the 1780s and 1790s. This is on the border of Applethwaite and Hugill. There are two entries for daughters of James in the 1790s (I haven't got the whole register for the period)living at Common. Common belonged to Robert who left it to his son William in 1811. William lived in Nottingham so his brother Isaac was the tenant. He shared it with another brother George, who was churchwarden in Windermere in 1822, but Isaac seems to be on his own in the land tax of 1829. He is the only Hutchinson left in Applethwaite.

Sorry I couldn't find your James. He may be there on a page of the register that I haven't got, or at a nearby chapel. I found some one had written about him and another person about George on the Ancestry website.

I have found a Thomas Thornburrow/Thornborough born in Kirkby Lonsdale on the same date but unable to go any further except he may have married a lady called Alice. I have come across some personel items that may be of interest to the family that suggest he lived in or near Burton Westmorland towards the latter part of his life. These items are of no monetary value but to family historian they are invaluable.

There seems to be conflicting information between your subject title and the marriage in 1860.

I would suggest more detective work before ordering the marriage certificate to avoid ordering the wrong one.

Although it may be right, as Kirkby Lonsdale was within the Kendal Registration District at that time, you may wish to check the 1871 & 1861 censuses if you have not already done so. If the 1861 shows them without children or with a baby, then this could be their marriage.

Alternatively you could order a birth certificate for one of their children (say your direct ancestor) and you should find that the mothers maiden name is quoted.

Where did you obtain the 'Davis' and 'Gibson' in the title?

In reviewing these census records it appears I had his mother's name wrong, which means maybe I have his father's name wrong also. I had Thomas and Ann, but I found his mother listed as Agnes, a widow in the 1851 census.

Headed back to the 1841 census to see if I can find her there, maybe with a husband too!

Re: WILKIN family of Brough & Appleby

I finally have information on the Wilkins that you requested by letter in 2000. The difficult one to find was the baptism of Priscilla Wilkin (she later married Thomas Dawson Lumb) as it was only in the Parish registers for Appleby, not the Bishop's Transcripts on which the IGI is based. "1784...Priscilla daughter of William Wilkin Esq. Surgeon Appleby & Priscilla his wife Baptized June 8". Seems that another Wilkin descendant married a Lumb (William married Harriet Lumb 1881, his 2nd cousin) & Blanche Lefroy Whittell married Samuel Key, a Lumb descendant.
I'm still at the same address, what about you?
Diane

Many thanks for trying. I guess that Betsy Lund/ Alderson is going to be very difficult to trace,
Kath
