Would like information of Joseph Turner,SR. who married Isabella Preston in Kendal about 1797. Also, I need help to find the correct death date for Joseph Turner, his son born circa 1808 who may have died about 1844 in Kendal, Preston or Hay. Joseph Turner,Jr. was married to Eleanor Musgrove of Kendal she was left a widow with three children, William, Sarah, and Samson. Joseph Turner, Jr. sister Mary married George Yeadon

Thanks for the info. To many Joseph Turners! I Have one in Leeds where he was working in 1841, now one in Kendal where his wife was from (Musgrove) and I believe there is a Joseph Turner in Hay in the same time period( From where his widow wrote a letter in 1848)Is Hay far from Kendal? I appreciate your help.

me again

Although people tended to move quite a bit, they rarely moved very far (not easy moving your furniture on a horse/handcart etc) so my gut feeling/experience says stay with Kendal.

You mentioned a sister Mary for Joseph jnr do any of these ring a bell:

All have a father Joseph & a mum Isabella

MARY TURNER
Christening: 20 MAR 1796 Kendal

THOS TURNER
Birth: 04 MAR 1798
Christening: 12 AUG 1798 Kendal

WM TURNER
Christening: 09 NOV 1800 Kendal

FANNY TURNER
Birth: 13 APR 1805
Christening: 19 MAY 1805 Kendal

these are all extracted records
****************************************

Although the 1841 census is notorious for bad spellings & dates, I cant find a Joseph with an Eleanor - the nearest match is

Joseph c1804 a Saddler
with a Nancy c1799 a Draper
in Milnthorpe, Kendal

there are only 4 Joseph's shown in total for Westmoreland, the others being c1831 Beetham, c1796 Grasmere, c1827 Grasmere

There are no Isabella's that tie in nor, any Ellen/Elenaor/helen/Eleanor..... nor, any Sampson/Samson

likewise, in the 1851 census I cant find any tie in at all???!

Just because Eleanor wrote a letter from Hay, it does not mean she lived there - could have been staying with relatives/friends ??

Have you any of the Joseph/Eleanor childrens certificates? what did he do?

Thanks again for your research, I did have a correspondence going with another persons' queries, Turners in Kendal, Westmoreland, and when my query that you answered seems to have been posted in Westmoreland, General category. She found the Joseph turner family, Eleanor, William, Sarah and Sampson on the 1841 census of Leeds, Joseph a paper maker. I did not find out if Joseph stated if he was or was not born in the city. Eleanor Musgrove Turner, b c 1804,Kendal, and her three children sailed from Liverpool in Jan- Feb of 1849 for New Orleans, Joseph having died between 1841 and 1848. I have not found any birth records for the three children, Sarah stated she was born Kendal in April 1832, Sampson born 1836 in Leeds. William ? He and Eleanor died in St. Louis, MO of cholera epidemic 1849-50, do death records found. Eleanors return address on her 1848 letter was Hay House Schools. She had nice handwriting and grammer. Eleanor mentioned in one of her letters that she was visiting the George Yeadon family, near Leeds. The church records indicate that George Yeadon married a Maria Turner.

Hi,

If you're still looking for burials in Kendal, have you checked-out the 'South Westmorland Burial Index'?

Thank you for your suggestion for burials. This is my Turner family as I have it: Mary (Marie) Turner ch 1796 mar George Yeadon of Woodside, 2. Thomas Turner ch 1798, 3. William Turner ch 1800,4. Fanny Turner ch 1805 and married a Bridge. and Joseph ch 1809, mar Eleanor Musgrove of Kendal, dau of Joseph Musgrove and Margaret (perhaps Sampson) of Kendal. The Turner children of Joseph Turner and Isabella Preston of Kendal. Joseph and Eleanor are on the 1841 census of Leeds, and he probably died in 1843 as the index gives a Joseph Turner for this date. A letter written by Elenor in 1848 does not mention Joseph. A Babtism record for she and her children in 1846 does not mention Joseph.

After reading the other replies, I offer the following further observations:

Marriage of Joseph & Isabella Preston (c.1797 as per initial message) - IGI 07 Jul 1794.

When the IGI advises a baptism for Kendal prior to 1813, it means the parish of Kendal rather than the town itself. I would recommend that you cross-check with the original PRs to find out where they lived at the time.

The post 1837 registration district of Kendal covers the parishes of Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Heversham, Beetham, Burton, Windermere and Grasmere. This makes it difficult to find the death of an ancestor before the age is provided from 1865.

Regards, Chris
