BETTERIDGE Manslaughter in Tamworth in 1860

Hello - I hope someone can help me

It looks as if my GG Grandad may have been the skeleton in my family cupboard. He was John Betteridge b 1813 at Measham who lived at Tamworth with his wife Elizabeth nee Lakin - he was a coal miner.

I have recently received my GG Grandmother's death certificate - she died on 12/5/1860 - the Cause of Death is stated as being 'Manslaughter by husband' - info from the Coroner of Warks following inquest on 18/5/1860.

That was a bit of a shock, I can tell you. I wonder what happened.

What I don't quite understand is that he was obviously not imprisoned for the crime as I have found him living with his 4 youngest daughters on the 1861 census - maybe they treated him leniently so the children would not become a burden on the parish. Perhaps he was tried but not convicted - I'd dearly like to know.

I understand that the coroners records have not survived. I would be very interested if anyone would have any other ideas about finding any info about this. Do you know what the local newspaper for Tamworth would have been at the time? I live in Kent so I will not be able to visit the local archives myself.

Many thanks and best wishes

Alison

Joseph and his family emigrated to the US in the 1850s and I have quite a bit of information about them after that, but I don't have anything at all about the people who come before Samuel or any of Samuel's other children if he had any.
Is anyone out there working on this line?
Thanks

Long lost Black Country Grandfather Joseph HOMER b. 1910 Tipton

I've been attempting to trace my Grandfather Joseph Homer born 21.11.1910 in Providence Street Tipton England.

His father was Edward Homer born in Tipton abt 1871 (coal miner) and his mother was a Sarah Annie Jukes born abt 1873 in Dudley.

He married a Hannah Hadley in 1930 having 5 children Ron,Gordon Rita(twins), Geff and Patricia (my mother). Hannah sadly died of TB in 1949.

Joseph served in the Royal Engineers and Royal Pioneer Corps, army no.1948506 during the 2nd World War and we think he saw service in France and Belgium.

After the war he never returned home( demobbed 1948) and heresay said he'd met someone in Belgium moved there and remarried (without a divorce) having two girls. This is only hearsay and he could have lived and died in England.

I have promised my Uncle to attempt to find more information if I can. My Uncle has spent most of his life searching for him and he is 77 and in ill health and would love to put this to rest.

I know it's a real long shot but can anyone help? Any idea where to go to trace deaths abroad?

I have more information on Josephs family if required.
looking for burial records of james bullock d.may 30 1875 and his wife emma speak d.april 16 1866. family notes have them buried at all saints church wolverhampton but as far as i can make out this church was not built then. could it be all saints sedgley or another all saints near wolverhampton? james came from broseley salop and emma from cardington and they lived mostly in broseley, including dying there, so their burial in "wolverhampton" is a bit of a mystery which if solved could perhaps shed useful light on james' forebears.

can anybody help??!!
I know my ancestor Edmund Clayton married an Ann, Anne or Annie Evans from Bilston in Staffordshire. I have her marriage cert so know her father was James Evans and on her marriage cert her name was spelled Anne. I believe I have found her family but want to prove it by getting her mother's name. I cannot find a birth register entry in any spelling other than Ann,but there are several with that name registered in Wolverhampton District around the possible time of ehr birth (1838/39). Can anyone tell me how I can find the right entry for her, other than by ordering (at great expense!)all the copies for all the Ann's registered between 1838-1840!

I need the certificates for 2 marriages that were registered in West Bromwich; William Samuel Smith to Annie Adlington in the June quarter of 1900 6b1426
John Madden to Jane Athersich in the December quarter of 1859 6b 884
What is the quickest most efficient way to get these certificates? I live in Western Australia and am visiting the Black Country in September/October. Can I get them 'over the counter' from anywhere while I'm there, or do they have to be ordered in and waited for?

FERNIHOUGH or TURNER of Staffordshire.

Hi

I am trying to trace my ancestry and I have seen some of your entries on a comments board on Ancestry.com, I was wondering if you may be able to help me a little. I am from LLangollen, North Wales. On researching my ancestry I have come stuck at my Great great grandparents. They are Joseph TURNER a beer seller in Cheddleton, Staffordshire who married Elizabeth FERNIHOUGH. I have their marriage certificate and they were married on 22 April 1852 in Cheddleton. It does not give their age, however it gives both fathers as Richard TURNER a blacksmith and Thomas FERNIHOUGH a farmer. Witnesses to the wedding are Mary TURNER and William FERNIHOUGH. I do not know either, if Elizabeth was the only child or one of many. There seems to be countless people with the name FERNIHOUGH in Staffordshire, particularly around Cheadle, Cheddleton, Ipstones etc. Perhaps, they are all connected?

Joseph TURNER and Elizabeth FERNIHOUGH had a daughter Frances TURNER (I don't know if they had any more) she married into the EVANS family in Ruabon, Denbighshire, Wales and their daughter in turn married into the JONES family. My father tells me that he remembers when he was small that certain family members with the surname FERNIHOUGH used to visit one of my great aunties in Wales. Other than that we do not know any more.

I was wondering whether you could shed any light on this part of the FERNIHOUGH family and if they are connected to any you have listed.

Many thanks

Jason Jones
Hello,
I am trying to find out more about Endon Mill, Horton. The only info I have so far is that it was built by John Lees (Leighs) in 1805, was not working in 1910, and was demolished in 1936.
In particular I would like to know - what sort of mill was it? who owned/ran it in later years (it wasn't John Leighs)?
what was there before the mill? and are there any pictures of it anywhere? Where would I look for further info?
Regards
Vicwinann

Mystery Staffordshire Parish

In 1854 Mary Ann SHAW married Charles EAST in Melbourne Victoria, having emmigrated on the Star of the East in 1853. In the parish register she gives her father as William SHAW and mother Martha Nudge and age as 21 (a fib I'm sure).

I'm unable to decipher the good vicar's hand to tell the parish within which she was born. Hopefully a good copy is attached.

To me it starts with 'O' and ends with 'bury' None of this fits the parish names for Staffordshire on GENUKI, Bushbury, Hanbury, Norbury,Tutbury, Wednesbury or even Ogley Hay.

Can anyone decipher it for me? Help, I'm stumped.

Darryl, Sydney Australia

BENTLEY, HOWDLE, WASHBROOK and RILEY in Willenhall/Bilston

Looking for information regarding my great-great-grandparents in the Willenhall and Bilston area.

George Bentley and Eliza Howdle married in 1890 and had nine children in Willenhall - Howard, William, Lewis, George (my connection), Minnie, Ethel, Jack, Nora and Hannah.

George Bentley was born c.1870 in Bilston, and was the son of another George and Emma (maiden name unknown) - they may have had up to ten children in total, but struggling to confirm details regarding this line.

Eliza Howdle was born in 1872 in Willenhall, and was the daughter of James Howdle and Mary (maiden name unknown) - I can not find much information regarding the rest of the family but I believe this line is descended from the Howdle family who moved from Hemingborough/Drax in Yorkshire to the Darlaston area in the 1820s.

George Washbrook married Louisa (maiden name I believe to be Riley) in 1889 and they had five children born in Willenhall - Alice, Thomas, Fred, Lottie (my connection) and Lucy.

George Washbrook was born in 1867 in Willenhall, but having found him with his wife and children on the 1891 and 1901 census returns, I can not find any earlier records of him as a child in 1871 or 1881 and have no names for his parents.

I believe that his wife was Louisa Riley, born in Willenhall in 1870 and the daughter of Thomas Riley and Caroline (maiden name possibly Davis). Louisa was one of ten children and census returns suggest that the family's ancestors may have lived in the Lichfield area before moving to Willenhall.

Information regarding all this families is very sketchy and I am struggling to piece together details so contact with anyone with a connection or infomation to share would be greatly appreciated.

Andrew Stead.

Longton area.

It's believed Walter Samuel Banks was actually named Charles Wallbank. I'm hoping to get lucky and find him on the electoral register under his real name.

-----
Doris's burial location is of particular interest as it's for her son who is now 83 years old and has never known where his mothers grave is. Longton Cemetery seems most likely.

If anyone knows where I should look. (as in what libraries etc, etc, ) or has time for a quick search for the burial location we'd be very appreciative.

The hope is that I can travel down from Liverpool and do the research properly armed with knowledge of exactly where the records/registers etc can be found.

Thanks a lot...

Dave C.

Families from Uttoxeter

My GG Grandfather GEORGE LIMER was born 1826 in Uttoxeter Staffordshire to parents James Limer and Ellen Kent.
George married MARY ANN COWLISHAW in London 1851. At the time of their marriage George stated his father James as being deceased. In the 1851 Directory for Staffordshire a John Limer of Carter street Uttoxeter is listed as a joiner , cabinet maker , upholster . A James Limer of Parks was listed as Farmer and grazier. I beleive these to be brothers of George. Mary Ann Cowlishaw was born 1831 at Uttoxeter to parents John Cowlishaw and Elizabeth SMITH, who married in 1829. John was a shoemaker. Elizabeth died aged 33 years in 1837. Can anybody throw any light on this family please! I am most interested in when and where James Limer and his wife Ellen nee Kent died. Any clues as to how I might find out.

I am researching my GG Grandfather, George Mayer. Information gleaned from 1891 and 1901 Census, and from his marrriage certificate, indicates he was born in 1863 in Kidsgrove and his father's name was James. But mysteriously I can't find him in any census pre-1891, and the only birth certificate I found in the correct registration district (Woolstanton) had the father's name wrong. He was married in 1890 and had just one son (my G Grandfather James Emmanuel) but "family legend" says he was married before. Any further information very welcome.

Missing Records from Tamworth, Staffordshire

I am aware that several pieces of the 1861 census are missing from the Ancestry index for Tamworth.

Does anyone know whether these pieces are available elsewhere, or are they lost forever to everyone?

I am looking for several members of my Cotterill family, and despite my best efforts, cannot locate them in 1861. So I have concluded that they must be in the missing pieces.

My ancestors, John and Hannah Cotterill, had 10 surviving children born at Tamworth between 1824 and 1845. In the 1861 census, I have found their first three children and their families, but I have not found the other seven children (or the parents, who were both still alive).

I have found John and Hannah and all 10 children living in or around Tamworth in the 1851 census; and Hannah, a widow and all 10 children in 1871.

Thanks for any advice,
Jean
"by" or "bg poolside", Staffs, Newcastle under Lyme, CARLON birth cert.

Dear listmembers,

I got a birthcert for my GrndMthr from GRO.
She was born in 1901 in Staffs Newcastle (under Lyme).
But On the certificate, the place of birth is as
noted above in addition it states -- either "bg poolside" or "by poolside" ---
it is hard to make out but it is either of the two.

I have been trying to research this and I am unable to find what it means exactly. A town close by -- Madeley -- seems to be a road in that town/village called poolside, but I doubt that this is the reference as I do not think they noted streets on birthcerts.

Is it more likely someplace else....can anyone tell me is a place was called by poolside?

The surname BTW is CARLON, parents Michael and Catherine, and the birth cert is for Annie, born 1901. She was my GrndMthr as noted. Other CARLONS were born there too I think.

I'm researching my mother's side of the family which is Broomhall. So far I've managed to trace them back to the early 1800's. His name is Charles Arnett Broomhall & was born 29 Mar 1819. He married Priscella Wright in abt 1950 & had 5 children. Mary Ann, Samuel, Caroline, Priscella & John. Any help with Charles' parentage would be very much appreciated.

George WINSPER - Bilston

George Winsper was my g.g.grandfather born in 1823 in Bilston. According to the IGI and a distant "cousin" he was the son of Joseph Winsper and Rhoda Cartwright. George married Sarah Adams in Birmingham in 1846. On the marriage cert, however, George's father is stated to be Thomas Winsper, Wheelwright, and that George is also a wheelwright.

On the 3 census returns that I can find him listed George is a travelling confectioner or a swing boat traveller, never a wheelwright, although knowing how to fix a wonky wheel on your caravan (a regular mode of transport and home for the family) would be of some benefit.

If anyone has a Thomas Winsper and son George in their family tree or even a Winsper from Bilston, please get in touch.

Cheers
Janet

I have a marriage certificate for Mary Dyke and Richard Jarvis of Matthew St, Wolverhampton. Nov 7th 1880. Mary's father is Joseph Dyke, miner; Richard's father is William, miner. There are a number of apparent anomalies - my other records indicate that Richard's father was Edwin.. and there was only one Jarvis-Dyke marriage on record. Also, I cannot find Joseph Dyke in either 1871 or 1881 census.
Does anyone have these names in their research records?
thanks
paul

WHEWALL family of Staffordshire

Hi all whewal searchers,
I have shared this info with one othr but thougth there were others who might find it useful.
I had a collection of information from parish records re the Whewalls( and derivitaves) and having run them through my system in a particular order I ahve come up witht he following.
In staffordshire we seem to have the earliest entry in the 1500's in Stone, by the 1600's Cheddleton, Dilhorne, Newcastle, Stone ,Kingsly, Norton in the Moors, Rushton Spencer all had Whewalls.
with the exception of Newcastle these places are all within a 15 mile radius- becasue fo this I think that we can assume some connection between the family groups- though what that connection is to date i have not worked out.

by the 1700's Whewalls were in the above plus Burslem, Cheadle, Etruria,Caverswell,Clifton Campville, Shenstone and uttoxexter.
Again here there is not a great spread distance wise.

further spread in the 1800's took them to Chesterton ,Tunstall and Wolstanton.
this movement is tied in with thee industrial revolution and movement towards the factories in particular the potteries I would guess.

I am happy to send a copy of this info if it will help anyone aout there and perhaps we could work together on connections. In particular those around Dilhorne and Stone
Sharon
