Surnames: ROBERTS AND LATCHEM (LATCHAM)
I wonder if anyone can tell me anything about the Butter Buildings in Radstock as two sets of my G G Grandparents were living there in the 1880s and 1890s.

I'd be grateful for any information. Thank you :-)

It's a bit before my Mum moved to Carlingford Terrace, but she might recall some of your names - who are you looking for?

Hi Colin.... Thank you for replying.

The names are Roberts and Latchem, but its the address that I'm interested in. Butter Buildings conjures up a very strange image!

I recently read an old message of yours regarding several family names from Bath, Somerset including the surname of Cross. My Grandmother was Ethel L. Cross listed on the 1881 census as age 2 months, the 1891 census as age 10 years all in Locking, Somerset. She is listed as a domestic servant, ( I can't recall where) on the 1901 UK census. Her father was Thomas Cross married to Martha Taylor. They had 2 other children, William born in 1880, and Sylvia, who I believe was born in 1890. Do these names mean anything to you?

My Grandmother emigrated to either Canada or the US in 1909 and married a Leslie Charles Armstrong born in Hobart Tasmania in 1884. Not sure when or where they were married.

Let me know if any of this works for you.

Mikey

Butter Buildings, an extensive development associated I believe with dairy produce - as the name suggests - was off Woodborough Road in Radstock. Modern housing now occupies the site (Springfield Buildings). On the other side of Woodborough Road, the south side, was Lower Butter Buildings. A smaller complex. This could be found between Woodborough Road and the Tyning Inn. The Inn still exists but most of the site is probably occupied by Walnut Buildings - again, modern housing.
