I have information off the 1851 census of Temple Bristol on the births of decendents in Somerset.
1. When were birth registrations required in England?
2. I have the following 'Where born' in 1851 census: Lambrook (sp?), Stowey (sp?), Chard, & Martock.
3. Parish registers - Where and how can I access them?
4. Dates for the people are 1810,1803,1836&1846,1838&1851
5. Suggestions and directions most welcome

Hello

(1)
Registration was required from Sept 1837 however, it was not mandatory till about 1876

(2)You have to look at a few census on "where born" as these can vary greatly and, oftentimes, people tend to remember where they were raised rather than where they were actually born (so, keep an open mind!)

(3) Parish Registers - depending on if they survived are a mixed bag, depending on the writer - some were excellent in their detail others, left a great deal to be desired. Usually best to do a "google" for "Parish BMD" then add where. If you have quite a few in one particular place or county, it may be worth your while purchasing a CD

(4)Pre 1837 in Parish registers after (hopefully) in the GRO (General Registers Office) available to buy at a cost equiv to £7 (English pounds) inclusive of worldwide postage

If you give a list of names & dates, I'll have a peek for you

Regards
Ell

In addition to the previous posting:

If you have an LDS (Mormon) Family History Centre in your area you can order in microfilms of the parish registers to search.
Lists of microfilms for each parish can be seen by searching the Library Catalogue at:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.a...

As mentioned, some parish registers have been transcribed online eg. Martock, but not alway for all time periods.

Increasing numbers of register entries are available through
http://www.freereg.org.uk/

Registers are also available at
http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/
but you would probably need to pay a researcher to look at these.

For "Stowey" there are parishes named Overstowey and Netherstowey.

I have done all my researching from here in Australia through the LDS Family History Centre microfilms and would personally recommend it if you are able: nothing quite beats seeing the actual register yourself.

Thank you for your reply. I have the following:

James Walden Trott born 1810, Lambrook;

Harriet (Carler/Carter? father Thomas as per death register in New York)born 1803, Stowey;

Julia born 1838, Chard;

Robert C. born 1840 Martock,

Lavina born 1841 Martock;

Thirra (spelling?) born 1846 Chard.

My gggrandmother Theresa was born in 1851 but I do not know where.

Roseanna is listed in 1841 census born 1836.

I have Harriet, Theresa and Rose on a ships list August 1869 coming to New York from Liverpool, England & Queenstown, Ireland.

I have not been able to find them on the 1861 census. Perhaps they were on the move to come to N. Am. I have a photo of a lady believed to be Harriet Trott by a London company. I have contacted a collector of the Parisian Photographic Co. photos and he replied that they company operated from 1864 to 1869 at 1 Orchard Street, Portman Square which is listed on the photo.

I have found Robert C. in Canada with children born in England, and Julia (Llewellyn) with children born in England, Lavina (Stone)with children born in England, Rose(Bowers) in New York and Ontario Canada

That pretty well sums up my total knowledge.

Thank you for your help

Thank you for your sites. I have been to the Family History Center and viewed some sites. I have also been looking at the possibility of a CD. This has been my first step toward the Trott/Carler or Carter family in England

Thank you again
