I am looking for information on my ancestors from Stowmarket, as I am a South African, so hence data is not always easy to find.

I'm looking for information on the Gooding family, specifically Mary Ann Gooding (1825-1886) who married George Welham (also from Stowmarket)

Also looking for information on the Leathers family, specifically Ann Leathers (1766 - 06 Dec 1840) who married Thomas Tricker (also from Stowmarket).

If anyone can guide me as to how to get information on them it would be much appreciated

SEEKING INFORMATION ON ONE ROBERT CHILVERS ... OR TWO

I am trying to find a connection between two men both named Robert Chilvers. I think they MAY be one and the same person.

The first Robert was born in Diss, Norfolk, 19 November 1725, son of another Robert and his wife Anne Brunning.

The second Robert married Sarah Hayward in Dallinghoo, Suffolk, in 1772 when he was described as “singleman”. Robert and Sarah had three children: Mary who died very shortly after her birth -- baptised in Melton, Suffolk, 6 November 1774, buried in Melton 9 November 1774; William baptised in Melton 1 October 1775; Elizabeth baptised in Melton 28 March 1778. Robert died himself not long after – buried in Melton 28 March 1780 – married for only eight years.

I find no records for the first Robert after his baptism in Diss.

I find no records for the second Robert prior to his marriage in 1772.

If they are the same person. Robert would have been 47 at the time of his first and only marriage, 55 when he died. He would also, incidentally, be my 4g-grandfather.

Does anyone have any information to say that these are, or are not, the same person? Or any further information about the wife and children? I would be grateful for any help.

Jonathan Chilvers,
Saltspring Island, British Columbia, Canada

Re: CUTTS family in Suffolk Co., England

Hello Peggy,
I have been researching the Cutts family of Suffolk on behalf of first cousins of mine whose maternal line goes back to the family of Charlotte Watson who married James Cutts (1847). All I have found is on my website at
www.goosefamily.org
On the home page choose the GOOSE tree and then recent amendments. The latest entries from the second to the ninth, by clicking on them takes you to that family page.
I went to Suffolk last month and visited several of the villages mentioned in the tree, including Ilketshall and Wissett. See the link to me on the home page of my website.
All Best Wishes, Ron Goose.

I may have a bit to add. SFHS burial index gives the burial of a Mary Stannard as 15 Dec 1819, age 79, Stowmarket. This would make her birth abt1740.

I have a Mary Tydeman bapt 28 June 1740 in Combs, the dtr of Martin & Elizabeth.

What do you think ?

There were a lot of bricklayers in Swanscombe and a big cement works.I had found a mention of a will for Thomas Frederick Bare by googling online. He died in a different part of Kent though I don't know the date now, and named his daughter, Winifred Heath within it. I think it had been posted by someone doing Bare research. My grandfather met Katherine/Catherine his first cousin in Canada, she was going by the name Kathleen Wallace and had married a George Wallace, they had no children. Mary, her sister, remained a Heath and lived in London in the 1960's. Thomas's family lived in East End London in 1911, Thomas, his wife Ann, the two adult daughters, Heath gddaughters. They left Swanscombe when the Heath grandchildren were small because Winifred Heath nee Bare was fed up, having lost the case against the cement works. There were a few more I believe in Swanscombe.

I have James Bare born 1829 Kirton and Margaret 1831 Frinley, Suffolk married, sorry I don't know the reference, their son was Thomas Frederick Bare born Sept 1861 in Swanscombe. He married Ellen Mary mitchell in 1883 in Gravesend, she died 1888, and he remarried to Ann Helliott June 1890 Gravesend (which is three miles from Swanscombe). I am sorry I did not make note of his occupation. Thomas was the father of Winifred Margaret Bare in 1884 and she married Percival Edward Heath in London. He also had Mary in 1892. Percy was born in Swanscombe, and had two daughters Catherine and Mary before he died in 1907 after an accident. So Perhaps a branch of that Kirton family.

Have been looking for Robert Bare, possibly born around 1775 maybe from Kirton, a bricklayer by trade married in Colchester. Hoping this might be where his family came from.

Susan Barron (nee Bare)

It is quite a while since I did my work but I was using original/microfilm copies of PR's, so hopefully this is right.

I have not been able to place this Mary Tydeman in my family tree as there are many possible Mary Tydemans, but if you have a record of here death/age it might help identify her.

And I can't help adding another Stannard/Tydeman reference - fom The Times, 1857
Christopher Stannard was sentenced to 12 mths for the manslaughter of Sarah Tydeman of Kings Cross

My Hayward family lived in Curriers Lane, Ipswich and were having children up until that time; they were James Hayward and Harriet Church. Their sons could have been having children in the 1860s. While I have recorded other children for them I don't have any children named Frederick but that doesn't mean there wasn't one. Coincidentally, James Hayward's mother was a Sarah WARREN of Lexden, Essex. James moved from Lexden with 3 children after his first wife died and married Harriet Church in Ipswich in 1834. The family remained in Ipswich after that.

Hello, my name is Dawn Sheppard. Ambrose Field Sheppard born in Cork Ireland in 1848 is my Great Grand Father, he dies on 29th march 1929 at The Black Mill in Yaxley, Peterborough. His son Samuel Ellis Sheppard is my dads father. Ambrose had 8 more children after Francis they are as follows:
Archibald Sheppard 1885
Reginald Sheppard 1887
Pheobe Ribbons 1899
Anna Ribbons 1900
Samuel Ellis Ribbons 1903
Agnes Ribbons 1908
Gertrude Ribbons 1909
Constance Ribbons 1911

Ambrose had the last 6 children with a lady called Elizabeth Ribbons hence the change in last name but for some unknown reason my grandad and the rest of the 'Ribbons' children all ended up using their fathers name once they were older, hence me being a Sheppard!!
I'd really like to hear from you and just wondered your reason for wanting to know about Ambrose.
Look forward to hearing from you and I hope this helps ,
Dawn

Hi, just to add that Sarah's birth is the only reference to Henry and Sarah Plumb/Plume in the Melford records, although there are other Plumes there; no Henrys bap at the right period. A Henry Plume wid marries an Alice in April 1783 and they have a son baptised in Jan 1784, so it is possible that Sarah was a late baptism of a child she had born illegitimately, and the wife name Sarah is an error, also there's a Daniel and Sarah who have a son baptised in 1780 ... it's always very tempting to think things could be clerical errors but it's possible they were just passing through. So look wide ... in the 17th and 18th centuries Haxell was the most common version in Melford, don't know if that's true elsewhere.
Lyn B

Hi

My name is Patrice Bauduhin and I have an ancestor named John Bewsey, that was a prisoner in the depot of Valenciennes between 1811 and 1815. I am trying to find more information.

I contacted "Les Archives du Nord" but they do not keep les lists of british prisonners between 1810 et 1815. They told me to contact the Archives municipales de Valenciennes, boîte postale 282 - 59306 VALENCIENNES, email : gbroekaert@ville-valenciennes.fr.
Florence MACKOWIAK
Archives municipales de Valenciennes
fmackowiak@ville-valenciennes.fr

Additonnally I got the following information:

Title
Navy Board and predecessors: Prisoner of War Department and predecessors: Registers of Prisoners of War
Scope and content
These volumes are for the most part registers of the prisoners in the various depots and prison ships taken during the wars with France between 1793 and 1815. They cover prisoners of war of all services in British hands, British prisoners in enemy hands, and the exchange of the two. They usually give detailed descriptions, with the places of birth, and show the ultimate disposal of the prisoners. The records were created by the Prisoners of War Departments of the Sick and Hurt Board (to 1796) of the Transport Board (1796-1817) and of the Navy Board, Transport Branch (from 1817).
Covering dates	1755-1831
Arrangement
The registers are in various sequences. The first contains registers of depots and prison ships in an alphabetical sequence of locations and ships' names (ADM 103/1-464). Home and overseas depots, and British and enemy prisons, are all within this sequence.
A further sequence of register volumes is arranged alphabetically by nationality, from American prisoners (ADM 103/465) to Spanish (ADM 103/505) and Various (ADM 103/506-510). Registers of parole prisoners (ADM 103/549-616) and registers of prisoners' deaths (ADM 103/617-638) are all listed in alphabetical order of location, as are the certificates with which the series ends (ADM 103/639-648).
Held by
The National Archives, Kew.

If you find anything on the depot and prisonners, please send me a copy.

Thanks
patrice
bauduhin@gmail.com
She married Edward Curtis on 4 November 1809 at Writtle in Essex and her maiden name appears to be PLEWEN. However, I'm not sure that this is actually a surname so I wonder if anyone with knowledge of Long Melford has any suggestion as to what her surname may have been. She signed the register with a cross so the vicar may have had to guess at the spelling from her dialect.
Many thanks Vivien

Hello,

interesting problem. I can't assist you with William STANNARD's parents, but I have his mar. to Mary TYDEMAN taking place on 18 Oct/1763 (not 1764) in Stowupland, just to the NE of Stowmarket. I'd be interested in any other information you might have on Mary, though.

You can contact me off-line at mailto:wyants@sasktel.net

Thanks!

Peter Wyant
Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada

I wonder if you can help me. I have researched William Stannard who married Mary Tydeman on 18.10.1764 in Stowmarket. He was buried on 21.10.1797 also in Stowmarket. I can not find a verifiable date of his birth. Contributors to Ancestry have thrown up John Stannard and Ann Bugg as possible parents, but there are no records posted to support this. Logic suggests that he might have been born in Stowmarket, but I appreciate that that might not be the case.
Thanks
