Hello ChalfontR - Many thanks for replying to my message board post. The information about birth certificates was really helpful. I have to admit I have to confess to being an idiot saying I'd found a marriage for Henrys' parents (Henry and Elizabeth). This is not the case , so sorry to mislead you I've been tying myself in knots trying to sort this puzzle out. On Henry Goldsmith Clarks' marriage certificate his Fathers' name is written as Henry Goldsmith, which presumably indicates his Father was never marriaed?
