Stuck on my 2nd Great Grandad, Charles Arthur Long

I'll start from the bottom and work backwards.

My grandad is Harold Long and its his Grandad that I am researching. So, my grandad Harold...

His dad was Alfred Arthur Long (b.17/5/1897 http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=wyorkcoebaptis...). His Baptism confirms dad as Charles Arthur Long and mother as Sarah Long, which of course my Grandad had already told me anyway.

The 1911 census (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1911england&am...) also confirms this along with Alfreds' sisters Gladys & Phylis (my grandad's aunts). The est birthdates and age differences also match the birth certificates I have for them.

So I know the next to research are Charles Arthur Long & Sarah Long.

My grandad didn't know Sarahs' maiden name but I have found their marriage certificate which shows her as Sarah Walker (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=wyorkcoemarria...). This marriage certificate tells me that Charles Arthurs' dad was Walter Long. So now i'm trying to find Charles Arthurs' birth certificate to confirm this and get his mum's name (which I have no info on!).

This is where i'm stuck. I can't find any good sources for Charles eg. birth/baptism, other than freeBMDs which of course don't give parents names. It's important to point out that Charles was born in Oxfordshire (my grandad told me this) and then moved to Wakefield, Yorkshire (where the rest of my family now are).

Everything adds up nicely so far. My next task is to find Charles Arthur Longs' birth certificate/registration which would be in Oxfordshire (long haudboro/handboro most likely) in or around 1871 with dad as Walter Long.

This is the freeBMD I have found which is in Witney (just down the road from Long Hanborough) and in Apr-may-jun quarter of 1871 (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ssrc=pt_t41016730...)

Obviously this doesn't give me the info I need to keep going further. Will I need to buy a proper copy of this from the GRO to get the parents names confirmed?

I have tried searching for a Walter Long marriage in Oxfordshire but to be honest I would never know if I have the right one as I don't know his wifes name or maiden.

Im getting alot of hints for public member trees which shows Charles Arthur Long (with correct spouse and children) but parents are shown as a John Long & Matilda (of handboro oxfordshire). This is on 2 public trees, but the owners have no proper sources - this looks like basic guesswork to me on their part so im not really paying much attention to this info? Plus Charles marriage cert shows dad as Walter Long!

For some reason I can't find Charles Arthur on any Census returns prior to the 1901 census. The ones I can find don't have Walter as father. Its difficult as his kids Alfred, Gladys & Phylis were all born after 1891 census so no chance of getting them with Charles either.

Any advice on how to move forward much appreciated!

Jamie
