Station Road, Ashington, Northumberland

Where might I write for information -- to see what Station Road today looks like? I have a picture of the street with houses and possibly stores (there are quite a number of awnings over the fronts) mixed in from about 1887 where one of my ancestors - Almus Surviner Nunn and possibly her brother Walter Nunn - were born.

There is a clock on the front or side of a building and a what looks like a church steeple behind the row of buildings (seen over the rooftop). There appears to be a milk container wagon pulled by a horse and people on bikes -- both women and men.

Any help in finding city directories for that timeframe to find what address and which house was hers, etc. would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

WOLSINGHAM - mystery surname in Northumberland

one of my relatives was named Annie Wolsingham Murray. I'm pretty sure 'Wolsingham' must be a family surname, but I can't fine any Wolsinghams either in Northumberland (where Annie was born), or in fact anywhere in England in 1871 (the census before Annie was born). Can anyone shed any light on this mystery?

Is anybody else looking for the Craigs family of Bedlington? I believe they were at the Railway Inn, Bedlington Station for many years. My great grandfather James Craigs was the proprietor in the early 1900s. He married Martha Patterson and they had three children, Florence, Jack and Joe. One of Martha's sisters (Emma) married into the Muter family. Does anyone have this surname on their tree?

Any Cowen Cowan, Cowing have any possible ancestors to Thomas Cowen? This is my paternal line and I'm so stuck and feeling desperate to find something!

Thomas Cowen born around 1855-1860 born Hexham
married Rachel Lewis in Carlisle 1876
Children Margaret (Maggie)1879 all born in Carlisle
Annie 1884
John James (known as James) 1885/1916
Mary J 1891-1893
Thomas William 1898-1901

I wonder if there is anyone else researching these people, I'm constantly trying to find Thomas Cowen's birth details as he states in 1881 & 1891 he was born in Hexham, Northumberland then 1901 that he was born in Carlisle.

I've been searching both areas, bought certificates and found nothing to connect so far.
His marriage certificate says his fathers name was William and occupation a Carter that didn't help either as I couldn't find him and I was advised that not all fathers mentioned on the birth certificate are actually their fathers names, to hide illegetimacy etc.

1850s records Wallsend or Willington - THOMPSON, LILLEY

For years I’ve “known” that ancestor William LILLEY married a lass called Margaret in the 1850s and I’m descended from their daughter Isabella LILLEY who was born about 1858 in Wallsend or Willington Quay.
However I could never find the marriage of Margaret & William nor the births of their first three daughters.
I now know that Margaret THOMPSON had three daughters before she married William in 1859 and what I would like to know is whether there are any records such as baptism which will give a clue as to the father of Isabella THOMPSON born 19 March 1858 in Willington.
Margaret may have had a long term relationship with William while he lived with his widowed mother or maybe she had a string of men – for fun or money.
---------------------------------
To avoid any waste of time chasing up things I already know I have listed below the relevant facts as I know them:

1841 census Ho107-827-2 folio 34, Cottages, Wallsend
Adam Lilley 44 Waterman Y
Isabella do 44 Y
William do 18 Labourer Y
Isabella do 16 Y
Abraham do 14 Y
Adam do 12 Y
Nancy do 9 Y
Margaret do 9 Y
Thomas do 4 Y
George do 2 Y

Death certificate, sub-district Wallsend, says:
1st December 1845 Adam Lilley, male, 46 years, Sailor, Found Drowned, Informant J REED Coroner Newcastle upon Tyne, registered 27 December 1845, Registrar Benjamin Forster.

1851 census Ho107-2409 folio 46, West Row, Wallsend [indexed as LIBY]
Isabell LILY Head Widow 49 NBL Berwick
William do Son U 27 Lab NBL do
Abram do Son U 23 Lab NBL do
Adam do Son U 21 Lab NBL do
Nancy do Daur U 18 NBL do
Margaret do Daur U 18 NBL do
Thomas do Son 14 Lab NBL do
George do Son 10 NBL Wallsend
Mary Ann do Gnd Child 11 mo NBL do [FreeBMD has birth Jun qtr 1850 Tynemouth 25 519 of Mary Ann LILLEY- cert says mother Margaret; no father]

Where Margaret THOMPSON was in 1851 I cannot pin down.

Birth Certificate - Born 2 January 1853 Willington Quay; Margaret; Girl; no father; mother Margaret THOMPSON; informant + The mark of Margaret THOMPSON Mother Willington Quay; registered 19 April 1853.
IGI has a birth:- Margaret Ellen THOMPSON 11 Mar 1854 St Peter's Wallsend NBL to Margaret THOMPSON (no father), batch I022077

Birth certificate - Sub-district Wallsend.
Mary Ann DODD(S) of Hexham?

Can anyone please help me with family info on MARY ANN DODD(S), born around 1853.

I've established she married JOHN JAMES WEISE, mariner, at the Parish Church in Sunderland in 1872, and gives her age as 19. At the time of marriage she lived in New Grey Street (no number given) and her father was "JOHN DODDS, occupation Cartman".

They went on to have at least two children, but possibly as many as a dozen. One of them, JOHN JAMES WISE, died in the Victoria Hall disaster in Sunderland in 1883, aged 10 yrs. The WEISE family name has changed to WISE, but I know they are one and the same because I remember my late mother telling me about the fact that Mary Ann lost a child in this event. In fact, it's uncertain from GRO certificates which of the two spellings is correct.

Her first husband appears to have died before 1891. She is listed in the 1891 census under the roof of Henry Craig using the name Mary Jane Wise, with "marital status widow, occupation housekeeper, aged 38, born Hexham, Northumberland". In the next census however, she gives her place of birth as Sunderland, but given the large DODD(S) community in Hexham and the fact that she could have named any other town in England if she wanted to make something up, I figure this is probably where she originated from.

Thereafter, she had two known children to Henry Craig. The second one, WILLIAM HOGARTH WISE CRAIG, was born in July 1892. He died three months later and the certificate shows the death was reported by "E. DODDS, aunt, of 29 Brandling Street, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland".

I can't find ANY reference to her own parents and siblings in the census records in spite of knowing her father's name and occupation, the clue that she had a sister with the initial 'E' and all the various street addresses that keep popping up on certificates...

Any help in tracing Mary Ann's parents and siblings would be very much appreciated!

Location of Wansbeck Street, All Saints Parish, Newcastle Upon Tyne

Hello all,

My G-G-Grandfather, Cornelius Faller, lived at 22 Wansbeck Street, in the parish of All Saints, in Newcastle Upon Tyne, at the time of the 1891 census. I am trying to establish if this street still exists. Other nearby streets in the same census include Blyth Street, Pont Street, Breamish Street.

If I look for these streets on streetmap.co.uk I get confusing results (at least confusing for someone who doesn't know the area) - there seem to be several possible locations, in Jarrow, right in the centre by the river of Newcastle upon tyne, or even in Chopwell, to the SW of Newcastle. Can anyone who knows the area enlighten me as to the correct location, and whether the street still exists.

Many thanks,
Zoe

Any ideas?
And Mary - I know nothing about her except first name and dob - any info much appriciated.

She later married William Thwaites who we think was a whitesmith and moved to Durham. They had 6 children- Charles, Fred, William, Henry, John and Ellen. We have no other information of her from before the 1881 census. So we would love to have any information of her or any of her family.

Hi

Does anyone have any further information that may help me with my Great Grandfather's parents and grandparents? Here is what I have and what the family know of.

William Cowie born 18 Oct 1851, Northumberland, England, died 26 Sep 1922 Broken Hill NSW. The family know that William's father was James Cowie, and that William came to Australia around 1856/58, but we are not sure on dates, or mothers name.

However we have found out the following:
James Cowie married Ann Charlton on 26 Aug 1804 at Ponteland, Northumberland, England. (Found this information on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints site). This may in fact be Williams grandparents.

Any further information would be extremely helpful with relation to parents, grandparents, siblings, births, deaths etc. I'm tearing my hair trying to find out this missing link to our family.

Thanks
Faye in Australia

HOLMES, LYON - Berwick upon Tweed

My g g grandmother married Joe Holmes in 1876 in Berwick upon Tweed. I think, if I am on the right track, that his father was Ralph Holmes (Fishmonger, game dealer, of Bridge Street). Her father was Thomas Lyon, a Draper and lived in Castlegate. by 1881 my g g grabdmother was recorded as being a widow but I have no details about the death of Joe Holmes. My g g grandmother remarried a Henry McCroben in 1882. He is recorded as a Commercial Traveller and I believe he was from Bradford. Any information/history/old pictures, about any of the above named, the businesses, in fact anything at all would be great. Thank you in anticipation.

My grandmother "Surman" on my father's side was a decendant, through her mother, a "Pain"(The pai piano).I have a photo of Lord Charlton and notes by a sister of my grandmother about him. Evidently his daughter married "beneath her". Beyond my greatgrandmother I have nothing else. Oh, we have his (Lord Charlton's cuff links!). Thank you for info.

I have found many Keys listed in Northumberland in the 1500 & 1600's and am looking to see if perhaps Northumberland may have been the area of origin for my husband's family in the late 1600 to early 1700's since it is near and has been considered to be lowland Scotland in the past.
TODD in Northumberland

I am searching for my roots in NORTHUMBERLAND.

I need assistance with information on GEORGE TODD b. 1839 and christened on 3rd of February 1839 at Loweswater. His father, JOHN TODD, is of interest and information on his ancesters is lacking. Information registered in Bellingham Parish records in the March Quarter of 1847 that states JOHN TODD was a miner of "SNOGGY GATE".

JOHN TODD was married to Betsy Holliday. JOHN TODD emigrated to America about 1853 where he worked as a coal miner. His son, George Todd, joined him in 1855 in Pennsylvania.

I would appreciate any information on John Todd.

Additionally, what in the world is "SNOGGY GATE"?

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Glen Griffitts
Portland, Oregon, USA

BOTTOMS + LOGAN / MARKWELL in Morpeth

I am searching for my grandmother's family. Her family was small and tragedy stricken and I have VERY little to go on. In fact, I am grasping at straws with some of this....

Her name, Catherine Logan b. July 7, 1923 in England (probably Morpeth)
d. May 19, 2007 in IL, USA

She had three brothers who I have found in the records on Ancestry.com and they all share the mother's maiden name as BOTTOMS...the name my mother recalls hearing as a child in reference to her grandmother. The brothers were...

William Logan (Willie) b. Jul-Aug-Sep 1919 in Morpeth
I don't know when he died but he died young with no known children

James Oliver Logan (Jimmy) b. Jan-Feb-Mar 1921 in Morpeth
m. Elsie (Grant) ???? they had no children
d. August 1997 in Bedlington, NBL England

Robert Logan (Bobby) b. Jan-Feb-Mar 1922 in Morpeth
I remember a story about him dying around age 19 from TB
Also, he had no known children

Now, here is where this gets interesting....my grandmother was indeed their younger sister but there in no listing of her birth on Ancestry.com --very fustrating for me because I know she lived and her DOB and so on.

My grandmother always went on and on about her mother's name being Jane. This has stumped me until recently. I found a Hannah Jane Bottoms who married in 1910 in Morpeth (I can only guess as to whom she married becasue that info isn't on anything I have seen). The dates and names seem to match that this is my great grandmother. However, how do I verify this? How do I get my great grandfather's name? How do I verify the story of another sibling being born to them around 1926/27 and "Jane" dying in childbirth???

I appreciate any and all help....THANK YOU!

Jenn

Sorry everyone I obviously wasn't concentrating Michael Malia married Mary Moran in 1890 not 1930 as previously stated.

My Grandfather Michael Malia is believed to have been born in Westport Co Mayo in 1859/60. Nothing much is know about his early life. However in 1890 he marries Mary Moran at St Bedes Chapel Westoe Lane, South Shields. According to his marriage certificate his fathers name is John, he gives his age as 30 and claims to be a Widower. In 1932 the electoral register has him living with other members of his family at 7 Hodgson St, Wallsend. Does anyone recognize the following family members.
Malia, James
Melia, Magnus
Melia, Owen
Malia, Mary Ann
Malia, Michael (My Great Grandfather)
Malia, Ellen
Malia, Margaret
I would greatly appreciate any information on this family as they may hold the key to finding my family in Ireland.
Regards Christine
George BARON b.1769 Northumberland

I started some research about 5 years ago into this member of my family - unfortunatly life has got in the way and I have got nowhere fast....!

I need some help.

What I have is a picture of a male in a frame, I have removed the picture and it clearly states
GEORGE BARON born Sept 1 1769. I believe this is a picture taken from a booklet foundered by a George Baron - The Mathmatical Correspondant - and framed by a family member during the early 1800's. This GB was born in the Uk and was emigrated to the US around 1799 - family folk law concurs with our GB leaving due to some connection with the Ridleys fate (the dates are wrong to fit this).

On the back of the frame was written 'our ancestor George Baron'. Also taped to the back of the frame was some information pertaining to George Baron living at Willimontswick Castle (Bardon Mill, Nbl).

I have no doubt that there was a George Baron in my tree, but what I need to establish is if the 2 GB's are one in the same.

Is anyone able to help with records about his birth and especially living at Willimontswyke Castle. Or any other information greatly recieved.

I currently live in Wiltshire, England. Lou

thanks for reading the garbled mass above!!

On 31 January 1900 John Ledingham SMITH, son of Alexander SMITH married Ann Chicken TEMPLE, daughter of William TEMPLE at the Byker Parish Church in Newcastle on Tyne.

On 2 May 1902, their son Robert Temple SMITH was born at 7 Alma St, Newcastle. He later went to South Australia where he married, had 2 children, and disappeared c1931. All efforts at that time to find him were fruitless.

Am trying to find if John and Ann had any other children, or if anyone has come across them in their research. Would also love to know if Robert Temple SMITH has turned up anywhere too!

Any scraps of information would be GREATLY appreciated.

George (born c1806 in North Shields) is shown as 'Widower' and I would be grateful for any help in tracing his first wife. I would also like to trace his father (also named George, surname shown as Atchinson on the marriage certificate), profession shoemaker. George and Mary are living next door to Mary's parents in the 1841 census but I have not yet found George Senior in any of the 1841 census. Many thanks. Vivian

After searcing for a Robert Hunter 1835, he was living in Darlington, although his birth place states Biggesman on one census and Biggollian on another. I am totally stumped, I have searched high and low so find these places, does any one have any idea. It states that it is in Northumberland, although on one it does state Durham but i believe this was a mistake, and it is Northumberland.

I have never heard of any of these, nor can I find anything similar, does anyone have an idea where these places could be. I can not find Robert any further back than on the 1871 Census, so cant even cross reference against those. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Kelly

Cynthia, would you have any URWIN info from England? I just found what I think is my family with this name in Harton, County Durham, England. On my g-g-grandfather's marriage certificate (Thomas Andrew Irwin) the name was shown as IRWIN, but the info on the 1881 Harton census shows Andrew URWIN. The marriage certificate showed Andrew as a Horsekeeper and the census showed Andrew as "Head Horsekeeper Colliery".

parishes of Plessey, Northumberland and Blyth, Northumberland

I have a possible marriage of two people born in Plessey, Northumberland c1787. Can anyone please tell me which parish Plessey was in, which Parish Records I should be looking at in order to perhaps find their births and marriage, and who holds these records. The three children of this marriage were, I believe, born in Blyth, Northumberland. Again, can anyone help with which parish Blyth came under at this time.

Many thanks.

Vivian

Thomas JONES b. c1787 Plessey; children b. in Blyth , Northumberland

Hi Michael

Thank you so much for the very detailed information - hopefully I will find the births/marriages I am looking for. I should have given the names of the people as you suggest and will give details now in case someone out there is able to help with my search:

Thomas Jones born c1787 in Plessey married Jane (surname unknown) born c1787 in Plessey.

The children of this marriage are:

Thomas Jones born c1825 in Blyth, George Jones born c1827 in Blyth and Margaret born c1828 in Blyth. Thomas had eight children with a Margaret Carr but I am yet to find their marriage. Margaret married a Richard Dockwray in 1844 and they had a son, George Carr Dockwray born 1844 in South Shields. Not sure what happened to Richard as George Carr Dockwray is with Thomas Jones and Margaret from the 1851 census onwards.

You may remember helping me with my BOAK family tree a couple of years ago - nice to hear from you again.

Best wishes

Vivian

I am unable to go there because I am in Australia. I could not afford a researcher to get a marriage record.

My ggg grandparents, Robert Ramage (seaman) and Ann Grice were married on 18 January 1824 at St John Newcastle, Northumberland.

Could you please print a marriage record for me? It is Marriages from the Registers of St John (1824-1828) where I found it through Google. It would not be difficult to find it.

Thanks, Steven from Melbourne.
